Melatonin: aeromedical, toxicopharmacological, and analytical aspects.

Melatonin, a pineal hormone present in the blood of humans and other species, has a distinct diurnal variation in its biosynthesis and, ther … ts principal aeromedical application has been in the experimental treatment of jet-lag effects. For aircraft passengers, melatonin administration at destination bedtime appears to improve sleep quality and to decrease the time required to reestablish normal circadian rhythms. For international aircrews that travel through multiple time zones without time t …

Initial Head-Neck Posture Affects Neck Injury Risk in Pilot Emergency Ejection.

INTRODUCTION: Neck injuries are commonly sustained during emergency aircraft ejections, with head-neck posture identified as a critical factor influencing injury risk. Despite this, the relationship between the initial head-neck posture and neck injury during emergency ejection has not been comprehensively studied. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of head-neck postures on the dynamic neck response of pilots during ejection. METHODS: Using the Total Human Model for Safety, simulations were conducted involving four initial postures (i.e., rotation, flexion, exte…

Injuries Due to In-Flight Turbulence During United States Commercial Airline Flights (2008-2023).

IntroductionAlthough often harmless, unexpected turbulence can occasionally cause injuries and even mortality for passengers on commercial airline flights. Studies of the mechanisms of injury associated with turbulence-related accidents can help airlines and regulatory agencies develop strategies to improve safety during encounters with turbulence.MethodsWe examined accident reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a federal agency tasked with investigating aviation accidents. Reports for accidents with at least one serious injury between January 1, 2008, and December 31,

Insect-inspired passive wing collision recovery in flapping wing microrobots.

Flying insects have developed two distinct adaptive strategies to minimize wing damage during collisions. One strategy includes an elastic joint at the leading edge, which is evident in wasps and beetles, while another strategy features an adaptive and deformable leading edge, as seen in bumblebees and honeybees. Inspired by the latter, a novel approach has been developed for improving collision recovery in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) by mimicking the principle of stiffness anisotropy present in the leading edges of these insects. This study introduces a passive, flexible, folding wing design

Circumstances and Pathological Findings in Civilian Helicopter-Related Fatalities.

Helicopters are used worldwide in a range of commercial and private industries and are particularly useful in northern Australia due to the sparse population scattered over large distances with remote regions difficult to access by any other means of transport. Nine civilian helicopter-related fatalities were reported to the Northern Territory coroner between January 2004 and December 2023. The victims were all male (age range, 34-74 years; mean, 52 years). All fatal crashes occurred in remote areas, the majority on cattle stations. Pilots were the sole occupants in 5/9 incidents; in 4 inciden

Safety during interhospital helicopter transfer of ventilated COVID-19 patients. No clinical relevant changes in vital signs including non-invasive cardiac output.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic in The Netherlands, critically ill ventilated COVID-19 patients were transferred not only between hospitals by ambulance but also by the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). To date, little is known about the physiological impact of helicopter transport on critically ill patients and COVID-19 patients in particular. This study was conducted to explore the impact of inter-hospital helicopter transfer on vital signs of mechanically ventilated patients with severe COVID-19, with special focus on take-off, midflight, and landing. METHODS: All venti

Sleep and Sleepiness Measured by Diaries and Actigraphy among Norwegian and Austrian Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Pilots.

The study examined sleep and sleepiness among shift working Helicopter Emergency Medical Service pilots from Norway (Norwegian Air Ambulance; NAA) and Austria (Christophorus Flugrettungverein; CFV). Both pilot groups (N = 47) worked seven consecutive 24 h shifts. Sleep was assessed by diaries and actigraphy while sleepiness was assessed by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, all administered throughout the workweek. The results indicated that all pilots had later bedtime (p < 0.05) and wake-up time (p < 0.01) as they approached the workweek end, but no change during the workweek was evident regar

American Helicopter Emergency Medical Service Pilots Report to Work Despite High Rates of Sleepiness.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies on helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) pilots found a positive correlation among fatigue, nodding off in flight, and accidents. We sought to quantify the amount of sleepiness in HEMS pilots using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). METHODS: An anonymous survey was sent via the National EMS Pilots Association emergency medical services listserv including demographics, the ESS, and subjective effects of fatigue on flying. Statistical analyses were performed using the t-test and analysis of variance. RESULTS: Thirty-one surveys were returned. Twenty-one (65%)

Analysis of Seasonal Risk for Importation of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae), via Air Passenger Traffic Arriving in Florida and California.

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is one of the most economically damaging pests in the world and has repeatedly invaded two major agricultural states in the United States, Florida and California, each time requiring costly eradication. The Mediterranean fruit fly gains entry primarily in infested fruit carried by airline passengers and, since Florida and California each receive about 13 million international passengers annually, the risk of Mediterranean fruit fly entering the United States is potentially very high. The risk of passengers bringing the pest into Flor

Ground-high altitude joint detection of ozone and nitrogen oxides in urban areas of Beijing.

Based on observational data of ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxide (NO(x)) mixing ratios on the ground and at high altitude in urban areas of Beijing during a period of six days in November 2011, the temporal and spatial characteristics of mixing ratios were analyzed. The major findings include: urban O3 mixing ratios are low and NO(x) mixing ratios are always high near the road in November. Vertical variations of the gases are significantly different in and above the planetary boundary layer. The mixing ratio of O3 is negatively correlated with that of NO(x) and they are positively correlated with

Use of respiratory protection among responders at the World Trade Center site--New York City, September 2001.

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) on September 11,2001, created an occupational health and safety challenge for New York City (NYC) firefighters and rescue workers responding to the disaster. Immediate respiratory hazards included explosions, fire, falling debris, and dust clouds containing particulate matter comprised of pulverized building materials. Ongoing risks included lingering particulate matter in the air and intermittent combustion products from initial and persistent fires beneath the rubble pile. Because the nature and extent of exposures in disaster situations

[Preflight assessment by hypoxic inhalation test in cardiopulmonary patients].

Flying may expose passengers to hypoxic conditions, which may induce hypoxemia, particularly in those with chronic heart and/or lung disease. Onset of dyspnea, wheezing, chest pain, cyanosis and right heart failure can lead to urgent need for oxygen during flight. The hypoxia inhalation test (HIT) provides a safe and simple means of identifying those who may develop hypoxemia during flight. We report our experience with 48 self-reporting patients who underwent HIT prior to pre-planned air travel. They inhaled for 15-minute periods a reduced oxygen concentration (F1O2 15%) under normobaric cond

Understanding the role of international flight networks in disease spread: spatial epidemic prevention zones and hierarchical disease control policies.

This study analyzed the January 2020 international flight network, i.e., during the early global spread of COVID-19, to examine how global air connectivity shaped the timing of first imported cases and to derive policy-relevant spatial risk groupings. Infomap was used to delineate spatial epidemic prevention zones (SEPZs), and network indicators, including PageRank, betweenness centrality, the clustering coefficient, and hyperlink-induced topic search (HITS), were used to characterize the international passenger arrival probability, transfer-related connectivity, connection density, and spatia
