Likelihood of coronary angiography among First Nations patients with acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity due to cardiovascular disease is high among First Nations people. The extent to which this may be related to the likelihood of coronary angiography is unclear. We examined the likelihood of coronary angiography after acute myocardial infarction (MI) among First Nations and non-First Nations patients. METHODS: Our study included adults with incident acute MI between 1997 and 2008 in Alberta. We determined the likelihood of angiography among First Nations and non-First Nations patients, adjusted for important confounders, using the Alberta Provincial Project for Outcome As…

Use patterns of antidiabetic regimens by patients with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use patterns of metformin-based antidiabetic regimens in patients with type 2 diabetes and to identify predictors of initiating metformin monotherapy. METHODS: By using administrative databases from Alberta, Canada, we identified all metformin users ages 65 years and older between 1998 and 2010. Rates of metformin use, either alone or in combination with other antidiabetic drugs, were evaluated at 6-month intervals. All rates were direct age- and sex-standardized using the 2006 Alberta census. Trends over time were assessed using Joinpoint regression software (Natio…

[Body composition analysis on computed tomography scans using easy-to-access segmentation software].

Computed tomography (CT) is an indirect and reference technique for body composition analysis with interesting possibilities in clinical nutrition. Segmentation is the automatic or semi-automatic software-based process by which different metabolic tissues of interest (muscle tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue and intermuscular adipose tissue) that are part of the current diagnoses of malnutrition, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are delimited, separated and quantified. The Alberta protocol is the most common segmentation guide, being applicable in most software. In …

Reexamination of sensory integration treatment: a combination of two efficacy studies.

Little empirical support exists for the application of sensory integration treatment (SIT) to assist children with learning problems. Treatment efficacy studies are expensive and difficult to carry out, and they have necessarily employed small samples that are inevitably heterogeneous. We have reanalyzed the efficacy of SIT by combining the data from one study involving 29 children in Alberta and a second study involving 67 children in Ontario. The results from each individual study, and now the results from the combined study, lead one to the conclusion that the therapeutic effect of SIT on c…

Trends in Increased Infection Risk Deceased Organ Donors. A Two-Centre Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Canadian regulatory standards require the label increased risk donor (IRD) be applied to donors with risk factors for hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV). This study aimed to assess trends in the rate of IRD and specific donor risk factors over time as well as the association with donor screening results for HBV, HCV and HIV. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of deceased organ donors at 2 Canadian centers (University of Alberta Hospital and Transplant Manitoba) encompassing an overlapping period between 2013 and 2022. The pro…

Suicidal ideation among mental health patients at hospital discharge: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that suicide risk is much higher for psychiatric patients in the weeks immediately following discharge from the hospital. It is, therefore, crucial to evaluate suicide risk accurately at discharge to provide supportive and lifesaving interventions as appropriate. AIM: In this study, the prevalence and risk factors for suicide ideations were examined among patients ready to be discharged from psychiatric units in Alberta province, Canada. METHODS: Researchers conducted face-to-face meetings with potential participants to determine if they were interested in part…

Fracture rate increases after immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment: a potential new immune related adverse event.

INTRODUCTION: T cell activation can lead to osteoporosis and while there are several case reports of fractures occurring after immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) use, to date, there are no population level studies looking at fracture risk related to ICI use. METHODS: Using Alberta Cancer Registry data, we identified all individuals treated with ICI for cancer between September 29, 2010, and March 31, 2019. Linked records from Alberta's healthcare administrative databases were assessed for the presence of fracture diagnostic codes in the year prior to and up to two years after ICI initiation. F…

Evaluating the utility of computed tomography of the chest for gastric cancer staging.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend routine computed tomography (CT) of the chest for gastric cancer staging. In Asian countries, where the incidence of pulmonary metastases is less than 1%, some guidelines recommend chest CT only for gastroesophageal junction cancers. If the incidence of pulmonary metastases is also low in Canada, routine chest CT may not be beneficial. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients in northern Alberta with newly diagnosed gastric cancer from January 2010 to July 2016. The primary aim of the study was to determine the incidence of pulmon…

Diagnostic Strategies and Strain Typing for Johne's Disease in Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae).

Cattle diseases are considered a major threat to wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) conservation. Johne's disease (JD) is a chronic infectious enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map), that affects domestic and wild ruminants globally and could negatively impact wood bison health. Clinical manifestation of JD in free-ranging or captive wood bison has not been documented. We studied animals in a captive wood bison herd in Alberta, Canada 1) to detect Map in bison clinically suspected of Johne's disease, by histopathology, quantitative PCR (qPCR), and isolation …

Bridge Healing: A Pilot Project of a New Model to Prevent Repeat "Social Admit" Visits to the Emergency Department and Help Break the Cycle of Homelessness in Canada.

Homelessness continues to be a pervasive public health problem throughout Canada. Hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) and inpatient wards have become a source of temporary care and shelter for homeless patients. Upon leaving the hospital, homeless patients are not more equipped than before to find permanent housing. The Bridge Healing program in Edmonton, Alberta, has emerged as a novel approach to addressing homelessness by providing transitional housing for those relying on repeated visits to the ED. This paper describes the three essential components to the Bridge Healing model: partnershi…
