Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have a high risk of cardiovascular (CV) and kidney complications, largely driven by inflammation, fibrosis, and albuminuria. Despite advancements in standard therapies, many patients remain at high risk, necessitating new treatments that target these underlying mechanisms. Finerenone exerts antiinflammatory and antifibrotic effects, demonstrating a more favorable hyperkalemia profile than steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs). Studies have demonstrated that finerenone significantly reduces the urinary albumi

BACKGROUND: The assessment of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is crucial for clinical management. In recent years, composite inflammatory markers, such as the leukocyte-to-albumin ratio (LAR), have demonstrated prognostic value in various diseases; however, its relevance in RA remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between LAR and disease activity in RA, as measured by the DAS28-ESR and DAS28-CRP scores.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 1070 patients with RA, who were categorized into three groups based on LAR tertiles: T1 (0.06-0.14), T2 (0.14

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication following total joint arthroplasty. Timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial for the management of PJI. Numerous biomarkers are currently available for the diagnosis of PJI; however, a single indicator often fails to meet clinical requirements. In recent years, combinations of multiple biomarkers have demonstrated diagnostic potential in other infectious diseases. Nevertheless, the application of inflammatory marker combinations based on albumin (ALB) ratios in PJI diagnosis remains underexplored. Therefore, this study

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is characterized by the displacement or even protrusion of the uterus and adnexal tissues into or through the vaginal orifice, severely compromising the physical and mental well-being of the patients. Current treatment methods, including surgery and mechanical restoration, are associated with significant side effects and high recurrence rates. Herein, we fabricated supramolecular hydrogels encapsulating bilirubin-albumin nanoparticles for POP therapy. The hydrogels feature a hollow porous structure, exhibiting a volumetric swelling ratio of over 60% in a simulated v

BACKGROUND: Urinary protein composition provides qualitative information not captured by total protein excretion alone. Prior studies have linked low urinary albumin fraction to tubulointerstitial diseases and lesions, but whether this reflects pathology itself or diagnostic composition remains unclear. We investigated the association of urinary albumin fraction with tubulointerstitial lesions and diagnostic composition.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study of patients who underwent kidney biopsy at three referral centers. Urinary albumin fraction was obtained by urinary

BACKGROUND: The current study aims to develop a clinically applicable radiopharmaceutical agent for long-term imaging in the diagnosis and management of oncologic patients in the field of nuclear medicine. Liposomes, as pharmaceutical nanocarriers, have been extensively studied in pharmaceutical industry and depending on their structural characteristics could be formulated for accumulation in various pathological sites in the body. PEGylated liposomes have smaller volume of distribution and decreased clearance, consequently, due to their more prolonged presence in the bloodstream and their sta

Polymethine dyes are invaluable tools for studying biological processes in vivo due to their superior fluorescence properties and biological functions. However, despite the availability of excellent polymethine dyes, their uncontrollable interactions with albumin often limits their applications to specialized contexts. In this study, we present a general strategy for modulating the albumin sensitivity of dyes through a hydrophilicity-differentiated bidirectional regulation approach. Experimental data and computational simulations demonstrate that sulfonate positioning is crucial for suppressin

Bronchiectasis severity scores, through useful in disease progression, are inadequate for monitoring exacerbation treatment. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the correlation between serum albumin, Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) and Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) with disease severity in exacerbated bronchiectasis patients. Serum albumin and NLR demonstrated significant correlation with disease severity, while PLR did not. Post-treatment, both markers showed improvement, indicating their role in treatment monitoring. Thus, we show NLR and serum albumin as reliable biomarkers for

Endochondral ossification is a tightly regulated developmental process in which vascular invasion and chondrocyte hypertrophy precede mineral deposition. While the cellular and molecular regulators of this process have been extensively studied, the mechanisms underlying blood flow-mediated changes in the extracellular microenvironment that regulate bone formation at the mesoscale remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the impact of impaired blood supply on the secondary ossification center in mice. Unilateral ligation of the femoral artery during early postnatal development markedly s

Gastroretentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS) are attractive oral extended-release dosage forms that prolong drug release and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract through engineered mechanisms to extend the residence time of orally administered dosage forms in the stomach. One of the gastroretentive designs is to render the dosage forms floatable in the gastric fluid upon oral administration. The present study aimed to develop albumin cryogels with extended buoyancy and remarkable resistance to gastric proteolysis. Protein hydrogel monoliths can be prepared through thiol-organosilane-media

Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum albumin (ALB) are strongly associated with the prognosis in acute pancreatitis (AP). The BUN/ALB ratio (BAR) reflects renal, nutritional, inflammatory, and endothelial functions. In this study, we investigated the association between the BAR and all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with AP. Using data from the Medical Information Market for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis. The relationship between BAR and mortality was assessed through Kaplan-Meier survival curves, restricted cubic spline models, and

Background Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common and potentially life-threatening condition with a wide spectrum of severity. While most cases are mild, a subset progresses to severe disease with high mortality. This study evaluates the predictive value of the C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin ratio (CAR), an inflammation-based biomarker, in determining AP severity. Methods A prospective, observational study was conducted among adult patients diagnosed with AP. CRP and albumin levels were measured at presentation, and CAR was calculated and categorized into three quantiles (≤6.7, 6.7-30.5, ≥30.5)

Hypoalbuminemia predicts adverse outcomes in subjects with diabetes. We investigated how it relates to type, duration, control, and diabetic complications. Albumin levels were measured in subjects hospitalized for uncontrolled diabetes and unexpected weight loss in our diabetology ward from 2010 to 2019. All underwent a clinical interview and examination with a CT-scanner and were checked for chronic diabetic complications. By multivariate binary regression, we analyzed the determinants of low serum albumin (<38 g/L) or severe undernutrition (weight loss and albumin <30 g/L). The 334 subjects

Obesity is a significant global health concern and WHO points out that 1 in 3 people globally are clinically obese. Obesity is a condition of having an excessive amount of body fat and is linked with several health disorders that include metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases as well as liver diseases. Serum albumin and bilirubin are some of the biochemical markers used to diagnose and treat various health-related conditions. Hence, the relationship between obesity and these serum markers has not been well established and can be described as complex. Although obesity affects the liver, it
