Curcumin encapsulated zein/caseinate-alginate nanoparticles: Release and antioxidant activity under in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion.

Curcumin-loaded zein/sodium caseinate-alginate nanoparticles were successfully fabricated using a pH-shift method/electrostatic deposition method. These nanoparticles produced were spheroids with a mean diameter of 177 nm and a zeta-potential of -39.9 mV at pH 7.3. The curcumin was an amorphous, and the content in the nanoparticles was around 4.9% (w/w) and the encapsulation efficiency was around 83.1%. Aqueous dispersions of the curcumin-loaded nanoparticles were resistant to aggregation when subjected to pH changes (pH 7.3 to 2.0) and sodium chloride addition (1.6 M), which was mainly attrib

Carboxymethylated Alginate-Resiquimod Micelles Reverse the Immunosuppressive Tumor Microenvironment and Synergistically Enhance the Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy for Gastric Cancer.

Due to the intrinsic weak immunogenicity of tumor cells and the quantitatively and functionally different populations of immune cells, immunosuppression has become the major obstacle for cancer immunotherapy. In this study, the biocompatible alginate was chemically modified with the carboxyethyl linker to facilitate the esterification reaction of the resultant carboxymethylated alginate (CMA) and resiquimod (R848), the agonist of Toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR7/8a). In aqueous solution, the hydrophilic CMA and the hydrophobic R848 formed stable nanomicelles (CMA-R848) by self-assembling. After co

Mussel-Inspired Calcium Alginate/Polyacrylamide Dual Network Hydrogel: A Physical Barrier to Prevent Postoperative Re-Adhesion.

Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) has become one of the main causes of female infertility. How to effectively prevent postoperative re-adhesion has become a clinical challenge. In this study, a mussel-inspired dual-network hydrogel was proposed for the postoperative anti-adhesion of IUA. First, a calcium alginate/polyacrylamide (CA-PAM) hydrogel was prepared via covalent and Ca2+ cross-linking. Benefiting from abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, polydopamine (PDA) was introduced to further enhance the adhesion ability and biocompatibility. This CA-PAM hydrogel immersed in 10 mg/mL dopamine solution

Enhancing the photodegradation of tetracycline in aquaculture wastewater via iron(III)-alginate: Degradation pathway transformation and toxicity reduction.

Tetracycline's (TC) incomplete self-photolysis by light irradiation generally produces toxic intermediate products, which posing serious harm to the aqueous environment. In order to diminish the environmental risks of TC self-photolysis, an iron(III)-alginate (Fe-SA) hydrogel assisted photocatalytic method was developed and the underlying mechanisms was also analyzed in this work. Under simulated sunlight, the photo-degradation efficiency of TC was 61.1% at pH 7.0 within 2 h. Importantly, four of the seven intermediate products that identified during the self-photolysis of TC were found toxic

Fabrication of polydopamine reduced CuO nanoparticle-alginate composite nanogels for management of Pseudomonas synringae pv. tabaci in tobacco.

BACKGROUND: The wildfire disease on tobacco can seriously hinder plants. Meanwhile, its pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae, can also infect over 200 plants and threat agriculture production. However, the disease usually occurs after summer rains which washes away most copper (Cu)-based bactericides, allowing the disease to invade. Therefore, we fabricate a new nanogel with high disease control and anti-erosion ability and study the effects of the reductant on the performance of the copper oxide nanoparticle (CuONP) composite nanogel. RESULTS: Polydopamine (PDA) is a polycation for both in situ re

Influence of polyphenol-metal ion-coated ovalbumin/sodium alginate composite nanoparticles on the encapsulation of kaempferol/tannin acid.

In this research, ovalbumin (OVA) and sodium alginate (SA) were used as the materials to prepare OVA-SA composite carriers, which protected and encapsulated the hydrophobic kaempferol (KAE) and the hydrophilic tannic acid (TA). To achieve the purpose of targeted delivery, the TA-Fe3+ coating film was prepared. Results showed that the observation of small diffraction peaks in carriers proved the formation of TA/Fe3+ coating film on the surface of four composite nanoparticles (pOVA, pOVA-SA, pOVA-KAE-SA, and pOVA-KAE-TA-SA). The protein structure of the composite nanoparticles coated with TA/Fe3

Mussel-inspired polydopamine decorated alginate dialdehyde-gelatin 3D printed scaffolds for bone tissue engineering application.

This study utilized extrusion-based 3D printing technology to fabricate calcium-cross-linked alginate dialdehyde-gelatin scaffolds for bone regeneration. The surface of polymeric constructs was modified with mussel-derived polydopamine (PDA) in order to induce biomineralization, increase hydrophilicity, and enhance cell interactions. Microscopic observations revealed that the PDA layer homogeneously coated the surface and did not appear to induce any distinct change in the microstructure of the scaffolds. The PDA-functionalized scaffolds were more mechanically stable (compression strength of 0

PCL/Sodium-Alginate Based 3D-Printed Dual Drug Delivery System with Antibacterial Activity for Osteomyelitis Therapy.

Chronic osteomyelitis is mostly caused by bacteria such as S. aureus, and is often treated with oral antibiotics or injections to suppress the bacteria. In severe cases, however, surgical treatment using antibiotic beads and metal supports may be required. In these surgeries, bacterial attachment to the metal may lead to biofilm formation and reduce antibiotics' penetration to the bacteria. Reoperation must be performed to prevent bacterial inflammatory reactions and antibiotic resistance. Thus, in this study, we developed a dual-drug-releasing PCL/sodium-alginate-based 3D-printed scaffold to

pH-Responsive Alginate-Based Microparticles for Colon-Targeted Delivery of Pure Cyclosporine A Crystals to Treat Ulcerative Colitis.

Cyclosporine A (CsA) is a potent immunosuppressant for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). However, owing to severe systemic side effects, CsA application in UC therapy remains limited. Herein, a colon-targeted drug delivery system consisting of CsA crystals (CsAc)-loaded, Eudragit S 100 (ES)-coated alginate microparticles (CsAc-EAMPs) was established to minimize systemic side effects and enhance the therapeutic efficacy of CsA. Homogeneously-sized CsAs (3.1 ± 0.9 μm) were prepared by anti-solvent precipitation, followed by the fabrication of 47.1 ± 6.5 μm-sized CsAc-EAMPs via ionic gelation and
