Reports of neurological toxicity of cryopreserved stem cell infusion are infrequent. Three of 179 consecutive patients experienced significant neurological events in this context. Transient global amnesia developed following infusion in one patient and in the other two, cerebral infarction occurred. Profound hypotension, bradyarrhythmias or hypoxia were not associated with any of these episodes. These events may have been related to infused DMSO, which in the non-transplant setting has been associated with neurological toxicity and local infusion of which has resulted in acute vasospasm in ani

Transient, global cerebral ischemia (TGCI) causes hippocampal/cortical damage and the persistent loss of welltrained, long-term memory (retrograde amnesia). Fish oil (FO), a rich source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, abolishes such amnesia in the absence of neurohistological protection. The present study investigated whether FO prevents ischemia-induced oxidative stress and whether such an action contributes to the lasting effect of FO on memory recovery. In a first experiment, FO was administered for 4 days prior to ischemia, and antioxidant status was subsequently measured after 24

Two rat models of memory impairment in passive avoidance learning induced by cerebrovascular disturbance, were established to estimate the effects of a cerebral metabolic enhancer, idebenone. Transient and global cerebral ischemia in rats, produced by 4-vessel occlusion for 200 s immediately after the acquisition trial of passive avoidance learning, shortened the latencies in the retention test trial performed 24 h later. This retrograde amnesia was reversed significantly by idebenone administered orally or intraperitoneally at the doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg before the retention test trial. Ideb

BACKGROUND: The human hippocampus can be affected in a large variety of very different neurological diseases, of which acute ischemic stroke, transient global amnesia, epilepsy, and limbic encephalitis are the most common. Less frequent etiologies include various infections and encephalopathy of different origins. Clinical presentation notably comprises confusional state, altered vigilance, memory deficits of various extent and seizures. While in hypoxic or hypoglycemic encephalopathy, clinical presentation and surrounding circumstances provide some clues to reach the correct diagnosis, in the

Because nonepileptic disorders may cause episodic and paroxysmal symptoms that resemble epilepsy, these conditions and syndromes must be considered in the differential diagnosis or when antiepileptic drugs are ineffective. Gastroesophageal reflux usually presents as recurrent vomiting in infants and young children. A small subgroup of infants develop apnea and cyanosis accompanied by posturing of the limbs, deviation of the eyes, or opisthotonos, which leads to the incorrect diagnosis of epilepsy. Breathholding spells and pallid infantile syncope, common in infants and young children, may also

We reported that fish oil (FO) abolishes retrograde amnesia consistently following transient global cerebral ischemia (TGCI) in young rats, provided it covered the first days prior to and after ischemia. Here, we further evaluated whether FO given post-ischemia in older rats (15-18 months old) is equally effective in facilitating memory recovery. We also tested whether the antiamnesic effect of FO observed after TGCI can be reproduced after chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH). FO (300 mg/kg docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) was delivered orally 4h after TGCI and continued once per day for 9 days. I

Hippocampal infarction is relatively rare. Many different diseases can mimic hippocampal infarction including transient global amnesia, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, encephalitis, and encephalopathies. An 89-year-old man was transported to our hospital for altered consciousness. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed slightly intense signals in the hippocampus with a mildly decreased apparent diffusion coefficient. Serial magnetic resonance imaging revealed features of hippocampal infarction. Symptoms and cognitive function gradually improved with rehabilitation, and he was tr

Spreading depolarization (SD) is a wave of almost complete depolarization of the neuronal and glial cells. Nowadays there is sufficient evidence demonstrating its pathophysiological effect in migraine with aura, transient global amnesia, stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury. In these cases, occurrence of SD has been associated with functional neuronal damage, neuronal necrosis, neurological degeneration, and poor clinical outcome. Animal models show that SD can be modulated by drugs that interfere with its initiation and propagation. There are m

A 64-year-old woman presented with the history of transient global amnesia. Magnetic resonance imaging with contrast medium showed a lobulated heterogeneously enhanced cystic lesion attached to the superior surface of the right tentorium, indenting the right temporal lobe laterally and midbrain medially. A small part of the lesion was located under the right tentorium and did not involve the right trigeminal nerve. The lesion was subtotally resected via the subtemporal approach and did not affect the trochlear and trigeminal nerves. Histological examination showed that the lesion was schwannom

Absence status is a form of generalized status epilepticus usually presenting as an acute confusional state. It is often initially mistaken for a psychiatric disorder, as was true in two of the six adult cases reviewed in this series. The differential diagnosis includes drug intoxication, post-ictal state, complex partial status epilepticus, transient global amnesia, organic brain syndrome, and interictal psychosis. Associated convulsive movements, such as eyelid flutter or rhythmic facial movements, if seen, should alert the clinician to consider absence status, and an electroencephalogram is

INTRODUCTION: Acute amnestic syndrome is an uncommon clinical presentation of neurological disease. Differential diagnosis encompasses several syndromes including Wernicke-Korsakoff and transient global amnesia (TGA). Structural lesions of the fornix account for a minority of cases of acute amnestic syndromes. Etiology varies from iatrogenic injury to ischemic, inflammatory, or neoplastic lesions. A prompt diagnosis of the underlying pathology is essential but challenging. The aim of this review is to systematically review the existing literature regarding cases of acute amnestic syndrome asso

Epilepsy represents the third most common neurological disorders in the elderly after cerebrovascular disorders and dementias. The incidence of new-onset epilepsy peaks in this age group. The most peculiar aetiologies of late-onset epilepsy are stroke, dementia, and brain tumours. However, aetiology remains unknown in about half of the patients. Diagnosis of epilepsy may be challenging due to the frequent absence of ocular witnesses and the high prevalence of seizure-mimics (i.e. transient ischemic attacks, syncope, transient global amnesia or vertigo) in the elderly. The diagnostic difficulti

The extracranial venous system is complex and variable between individuals. Until recently, these variations were acknowledged as developmental variants and were not considered pathological findings. However, in the last decade, the presence and severity of uni- or bi-lateral jugular venous reflux (JVR) was linked to several central nervous system (CNS) disorders such as transient global amnesia, transient monocular blindness, cough headache, primary exertional headache and, most recently, to Alzheimer's disease. The most recent introduction of a composite criteria-based vascular condition nam

The year of 2014 is the birth centenary of Aristides Azevedo Pacheco Leão (1914-1993), and also marks seventy years of the publication of his discovery of the novel electrophysiological phenomenon, named by him "spreading depression" (SD), soon designated "Leão's wave" or "Leão's spreading depression". This was a remarkable scientific milestone, and the author must be celebrated for this achievement, as the studies he triggered proceeded worldwide, with new concepts, as spreading depolarization, until the present days. Robust experimental and clinical evidence emerged to suggest that these and

The neuropsychological records of 56 patients operated for clipping were studied. Almost every patient remained autonomous and without invalidating motor defect. The present study was aimed at specifying the type and frequency of neuropsychological sequelae and, to a lesser extent, the role of various pathophysiological factors. A main concern was to examine to what extent and at what post-operative interval the neuropsychological assessment can predict the intellectual and socioprofessional outcome of each individual patient. The neuropsychological assessment performed beyond the acute phase

"Encephalopathy" is a vague term that encompasses varying definitions, often with a nonspecific clinical presentation and numerous possible pathophysiologic causes. Hence, MR imaging plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis and treatment by identifying imaging patterns when there is limited clinical history in such patients with acute encephalopathy. The aim of this review was to aid in remembrance of etiologies of potentially reversible acute encephalopathic syndromes on MR imaging. The differential includes vascular (reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, transient global amnesia,

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (rCMRO2), and oxygen extraction fraction (rOEF) were measured using positron emission tomography (PET) in four patients with cirrhosis (two males and two females, aged 57 to 69 years) in comparison with those in five age-matched controls with previous transient global amnesia. PET studies were carried out when the patients were fully alert and oriented after the episodes of encephalopathy. In the patients, rCBF tended to be lower, while rCMRO2 was significantly lowered in almost all hemisphere cortices, more markedly in the

PURPOSE: To report a case of familial retinal arteriolar tortuosity with acute hippocampal infarction.
METHOD: Single-patient case report.
RESULTS: A 50-year-old woman presented with blurred vision and was found to have cataract, retinal hemorrhages, and tortuous retinal arterioles in both eyes. Similar findings of tortuous retinal arterioles were observed in her daughter and son. In her past history of 6 years prior to the visit, she had been diagnosed with transient global amnesia after brain magnetic resonance imaging, which showed hippocampal infarction and multiple chronic ischemic lesi

Punctate hippocampal hyperintensity (PHH) on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a well-known observation in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA), which is characterized by acute self-limiting episodes of anterograde and retrograde amnesia. These lesions occur unilaterally or bilaterally in the CA1 regions of the hippocampus, which are crucial for memory processes. PHH on DWI is well-documented in TGA but rare in other conditions. This case report describes a 56-year-old male bus driver who presented with PHH on DWI following epileptic seizures without TGA-like episodes. The patient ex
