The coracoglenoid notch: anatomy and clinical significance.

INTRODUCTION: The superior surface of the anatomical neck is presented in the classification of scapular fractures as a 2-cm-long structure, which does not correspond to reality. This issue has not yet been adequately addressed in the literature. The aim of the study was to assess the variability of a notch between the upper rim of the glenoid and the coracoid base, the so-called coracoglenoid notch (CGN), and its clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was based on the examination of 204 dry bone specimens of adult scapulae (92 male and 112 female). We have determined quantit

Anatomy and Pathology of the Texel Sheep Larynx.

Laryngeal chondritis, or "Texel throat", is a disease affecting the upper respiratory tract of sheep with breeds like the Texel appearing to be predisposed. Previous work suggests the conformation of these breeds of sheep may be predisposing these animals to laryngeal disease. This study evaluated the anatomy of the Texel sheep larynx and describes incidental pathology. Forty-three larynges from rams of the Texel and Bluefaced Leicester breeds of sheep were measured and photographed. A larynx from each breed was submitted for computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Measu…

Anatomy and development of the human taste system.

The sense of taste relies on well-defined neuroanatomical structures, namely, the taste buds and afferent nerve fibers. Taste buds are clust … asant, from "useful" ones, often perceived as pleasant, salty, or sweet. This chapter describes the anatomy and development of the human peripheral taste system and provides historical context for what is presently known about this element of this important sensory system. Its main focus is on the fundamental question of how tastants are perceived-a quest …

Midbrain, Pons, and Medulla: Anatomy and Syndromes.

The anatomy of the brainstem is complex. It contains numerous cranial nerve nuclei and is traversed by multiple tracts between the brain and spinal cord. Improved MRI resolution now allows the radiologist to identify a higher level of anatomic detail, but an understanding of functional anatomy is crucial for correct interpretation of disease. Brainstem syndromes are most commonly due to occlusion of the posterior circulation or mass effect from intrinsic space-occupying lesions. These syndromes can have subtle imaging findings that may be missed by a radiologist unfamiliar with the anatomy or …

Microsurgical Anatomy of the Central Retinal Artery.

BACKGROUND: The central retinal artery (CRA) has been described as one of the first branches of the ophthalmic artery. It arises medial to the ciliary ganglion and after a sinuous path within the orbital cavity it penetrates the lower surface of the dura mater that covers the optic nerve, approximately 1 cm behind the eyeball. However, the numerous anatomic descriptions that were made of the CRA have been insufficient or unclear in relation to certain characteristics that are analyzed in the present study. METHODS: An electronic literature search was made in the PubMed database and a cadaver d

Surgical Anatomy of the Uterosacral Ligament Colpopexy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the relationship of the uterosacral ligament (USL) to the ureter and rectum along a surgeon's target location for suture placement under conditions simulating live surgery. METHODS: Dissections were performed in 11 unembalmed female cadavers. Steps were taken to identify the USL simulating USL colpopexy. Pins were placed in the midportion of the USL at the level of the IS, and at 1-cm, 2-cm, and 3-cm increments traveling proximally toward the sacrum (Fig. 1). We measured minimum distances from the USL to the ureter and rectum at each target loc

Clinical Anatomy of the Ligament of the Head of Femur.

The ligament of the head of femur (LHF) has gained clinical attention recently and is reported to contribute to hip stability. This study explores its morphology and morphometry, information that may help inform surgical decision making. Gross anatomical dissections were undertaken on 229 embalmed hips from European (n = 105) and Thai (n = 124) adult cadavers to examine LHF anatomy. Ligament morphometry was statistically compared at different sites, between sexes and sides. The origin of ligamental arteries and absence of the ligament were documented. The LHF was pyramidal or quadrangular in s…

The cingulum bundle: Anatomy, function, and dysfunction.

The cingulum bundle is a prominent white matter tract that interconnects frontal, parietal, and medial temporal sites, while also linking subcortical nuclei to the cingulate gyrus. Despite its apparent continuity, the cingulum's composition continually changes as fibres join and leave the bundle. To help understand its complex structure, this review begins with detailed, comparative descriptions of the multiple connections comprising the cingulum bundle. Next, the impact of cingulum bundle damage in rats, monkeys, and humans is analysed. Despite causing extensive anatomical disconnections, cin

MRI of the Penis: Indications, Anatomy, and Pathology.

The purpose of this review is to discuss the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of penile pathology. Normal penile anatomy as well as the appearance of neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities on MRI will be reviewed. While ultrasound remains the first line imaging modality in evaluating most penile pathology, MR imaging has specific advantages owing to improved soft tissue resolution, ability to evaluate less accessible or complex anatomy (such as at the base of the penis), and the ability to detect subtle enhancement. Therefore, MRI is useful for when ultrasound and/or …

Anatomy of the atrial septum and interatrial communications.

Deficiencies in the septum separating the two atrial chambers are among the most common of congenital heart malformations. This article reviews the developmental aspects of the partitioning of the primitive atrium into right and left atrial chambers, the anatomical components of the atrial septum, and deficiencies that produce the various types of interatrial communications. Knowledge of the components of the true atrial septum in the developed heart clarifies the morphology of various types of interatrial communications. The oval fossa defect (also termed secundum ASD) is located within the t

[Anatomy and biomechanics of the distal radioulnar joint].

BACKGROUND: The functionality of the upper extremity is decisively based on rotation of the forearm. The rotation depends on the extent of motion of the distal radioulnar joint. Rotation enables complete and focused usability of the hand in order to cope with daily activities. The configuration of the distal radioulnar joint has developed over millions of years of evolution. ANATOMIC CONDITIONS: The triangular fibrocartilage complex is the crucial stabiliser of the latter joint since osseous structures are limited. The palmar and dorsal radioulnar ligaments belong to this complex. The superfi

Essential Anatomy and Evaluation for Functional Rhinoplasty.

The nose, a prominent facial feature in defining facial beauty, is responsible for the fundamental physiologic functions of heating, humidifying, and filtering inspired air. When the normal balance of laminar and turbulent airflow become disturbed due to anatomic abnormalities, nasal obstruction may result. To successfully restore these basic physiologic functions, the surgeon must have a detailed understanding of the nasal anatomy and be able to successfully identify the specific cause of the nasal obstruction. This article discusses the fundamental surgical anatomy and the various diagnostic…
