Abattoir monitoring of liver lesions caused by Ascaris suum larvae: A longitudinal study conducted in northern Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Data supplied by the abattoir monitoring system offer a useful tool both for tracing the prevalence of Ascaris suum milk spot lesions and for conducting large-scale epidemiological studies. MATERIALS: In this study, livers of 754833 slaughtered pigs from 5835 batches and 399 farms located in northern Italy, were evaluated in one of the largest national abattoirs during a year of survey. From each farm data concerning the breeding region and province, the season of post-mortem inspection, the farm size and the type of farm production were collected and the probability of finding

Identification of the Novel Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus Sequence Type 525 in Donkeys of Abruzzo Region, Italy.

Streptococcus equi sub. zooepidemicus (SEZ) is described as a commensal bacterium of several animal species, including humans. Growing evidence supports the potential role of SEZ in the onset and progression of severe clinical manifestations of diseases in horses and other animals. In the present communication, we describe the diagnostic procedure applied to characterize the streptococcal infections caused by a novel SEZ sequence type (ST525) in donkeys raised on a farm in Abruzzo, Italy. The diagnostic process began with anamnesis and anatomopathological analysis, which revealed a severe bact

Survey of exposure to stranded dolphins in Japan to investigate an outbreak of suspected infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4(b) in humans.

BACKGROUND: A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A (H5N1) virus has been detected in domestic and wild animals worldwide. The incidence of HPAI infections in sea mammals has been increasing, as is the number of stranded marine mammals linked to H5N1 viral clade 2.3.4.4(b). In this study, we investigated a stranding event involving dolphins and human-dolphin contact, and investigated the potential risk of animal-to-human H5N1 transmission with a survey of exposure on the Tsurigasaki coast, Japan. METHODS: We performed a non-random, convenient-sample-based, survey on Tsurigasaki beach whe

Antitoxin Use in the Prevention and Treatment of Anthrax Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus anthracis is a high-priority threat agent because of its widespread availability, easy dissemination, and ability to cause substantial morbidity and mortality. Although timely and appropriate antimicrobial therapy can reduce morbidity and mortality, the role of adjunctive therapies continues to be explored. METHODS: We searched 11 databases for articles that report use of anthrax antitoxins in treatment or prevention of systemic anthrax disease published through July 2019. We identified other data sources through reference search and communication with experts. We include

ROS-dependent signalling pathways in plants and algae exposed to high light: Comparisons with other eukaryotes.

Like all aerobic organisms, plants and algae co-opt reactive oxygen species (ROS) as signalling molecules to drive cellular responses to changes in their environment. In this respect, there is considerable commonality between all eukaryotes imposed by the constraints of ROS chemistry, similar metabolism in many subcellular compartments, the requirement for a high degree of signal specificity and the deployment of thiol peroxidases as transducers of oxidising equivalents to regulatory proteins. Nevertheless, plants and algae carry out specialised signalling arising from oxygenic photosynthesis

Antimicrobial resistance in Chile and The One Health paradigm: Dealing with threats to human and veterinary health resulting from antimicrobial use in salmon aquaculture and the clinic.

The emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) is currently seen as one of the major threats to human and animal public health. Veterinary use of antimicrobials in both developing and developed countries is many-fold greater than their use in human medicine and is an important determinant in selection of ARB. In light of the recently outlined National Plan Against Antimicrobial Resistance in Chile, our findings on antimicrobial use in salmon aquaculture and their impact on the environment and human health are highly relevant. Ninety-five percent of tetracyclines, phe

Neuroligin-3-deficient mice: model of a monogenic heritable form of autism with an olfactory deficit.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a frequent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by variable clinical severity. Core symptoms are qualitatively impaired communication and social behavior, highly restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Although recent work on genetic mutations in ASD has shed light on the pathophysiology of the disease, classifying it essentially as a synaptopathy, no treatments are available to date. To develop and test novel ASD treatment approaches, validated and informative animal models are required. Of particular interest, in this context are loss-of-function

Abnormal social behaviors in young and adult rats neonatally infected with Borna disease virus.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have been the focus of a great deal of research and clinical speculation. This intense interest relates to both the perplexing pathogenesis and devastating consequences of these disorders. One of the obstacles to understanding the pathogenesis of autism and to developing efficient treatment has been the paucity of animal models that could be used for hypotheses-driven mechanistic studies of abnormal brain and behavior development and for the pre-clinical testing novel pharmacological treatments. In this report, we briefly review our animal model of ASD based on

Anal and ano-urogenital malformations: a histopathological study of "imperforate anus" with a reconstruction of the pathogenesis.

Histopathological information about "anorectal malformations" is scarce and the pathogenesis still controversial. Autopsy specimens of 20 human fetuses and newborns with "main" types of the disorder were studied histologically. Supplemented with surgical-anatomical data from the literature and with information from our own and earlier embryological research in animal models as well as from recent observations on the normal development of the human perineum, the study allowed for a new reconstruction of the pathogenesis of the disorder. The histological analysis of the malformations in human fe

Myelination deficits in brain of rats following perinatal asphyxia.

Perinatal asphyxia remains a major cause of acute mortality and of permanent neurodevelopmental disability in infants and children. However, the pathophysiologic features of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy are still incompletely understood. Animal studies have been focussing on grey matter pathology but information on white matter lesions is limited. The aim of the study was to investigate white matter lesions after three months following graded perinatal asphyxia in the rat using a well-documented, reproducible, clinically relevant and simple animal model of perinatal asphyxia. Brains of rat

Strategic development of a buffalo farming framework and optimization of the foraging behaviour using mathematical models.

This study examined the foraging behaviour of buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) on a private dairy farm in southern India from April 2016 to March 2017. Foraging behaviour plays a major role in improving production, well-being, and sustainable buffalo farming practices. Using direct observation and focal animal sampling, data were collected daily across four seasons: summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon. Seasonal forage availability and the distances travelled for foraging were analysed to understand behavioural patterns and habitat preferences. Mathematical models based on Optimal Foragin

Protocol for Microbiome Transplantation in Suckling Mice during Vibrio cholerae Infection to Study Commensal-Pathogen Interactions.

The gut microbiome plays an important role in the exclusion of pathogens and, thus, infection outcomes. Microbiome-pathogen interaction studies are complicated by a lack of tractable animal models and differences in animal model versus human microbiomes. We have adapted the suckling mouse model of infection of the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae to clear murine microbes and establish human-associated gut microbes during infection. Our method allows for the easy examination of the contribution of different human microbial communities to enteropathogenesis. For complete details on the use and exe

Response to bio-terrorism directed against animals.

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has a long history of rapid direction, control, and eradication of devastating diseases. Our immediate response mechanisms to diseases such as avian influenza, Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis, and Newcastle disease, have long been recognized by the global emergency response community as models of control and eradication. APHIS and the U.S. livestock industries, in partnership with the Animal Agriculture Coalition, re-evaluated the Nation's animal health emergency preparedness and response systems. The group identified areas that negati

Bacterial communities in Haemaphysalis, Dermacentor and Amblyomma ticks collected from wild boar of an Orang Asli Community in Malaysia.

Ticks are hematophagous vectors of arthropod-borne disease agents globally. In Malaysia, despite seroprevalence studies indicating the presence of tick-borne diseases among the indigenous people, the etiological agents of these diseases are still unclear. These indigenous people, also known as the Orang Asli, still live in forested areas with frequent contact with wildlife. Wild boar are ubiquitously found in the forested areas where the Orang Asli communities are located and are commonly hunted as a food supplement. In this study, we aim to determine the tick species parasitizing wild boar fr

Ultrasonic vocalizations in mice and rats: New applications and recent developments from sender to receiver.

Mice and rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) above the human hearing range. Such USV are widely regarded as reliable indicators of the animal's affective state. Moreover, USV serve important communicative functions. Given their prominent role in social communication, this review adopts a reciprocal framework that considers both sender and receiver, with particular emphasis on both the production and perception of USV. The review focuses on sex differences and subtype variations in the sender, and explores the communicative value of USV through playback studies, revealing their role in reg

Human exposure to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus is associated with livestock management and handling practices in southcentral Tanzania, 2023-2024.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a tick-borne zoonotic pathogen widely distributed across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Human infection occurs through tick bites or contact with infected animal tissues. In Tanzania, evidence of human exposure exists, but data on population-level seroprevalence and associated behavioral risk factors remain limited. This study assessed human CCHFV seroprevalence and identified demographic, behavioral, and environmental factors associated with prior exposure in livestock-keeping communities in southcentral Tanzania. METHODS: A community-b

Metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiota in Cygnus cygnus and isolation, identification, and safety assessment of Bacillus.

INTRODUCTION: As a national second-class protected wild animal, the intestinal microbial community of Cygnus cygnus is highly important for health status and ecological balance. The potential application value of probiotics in animal health and disease prevention has attracted much attention, but few studies have investigated probiotics derived from wild animals. METHODS: We initially collected fecal samples before and after the migration of the C. cygnus for macrogenomic sequencing. We subsequently isolated Bacillus spp. from C. cygnus feces and determined their hemolytic properties and tole
