Cerebral white matter changes in deficit and non-deficit subtypes of schizophrenia.

The considerable clinical heterogeneity in schizophrenia makes elucidation of its neurobiology challenging. Subtyping the disorder is one wa … ology, psychosocial functioning and premorbid intelligence. We found that DS patients had fractional anisotropy (FA) reductions in the Body of the Corpus Callosum (BCC) and right Posterior Thalamic Radiation (PTR) regions relative to HCs, and FA reductions in the right PTR relative to NDS patients. NDS patients had FA reductions of the BCC and right PTR relat …

Computationally modelling the mechanical behaviour of turtle shell sutures-A natural interlocking structure.

Sutures, the soft collagenous tissue joining interdigitating bony protrusions on the edges of bone plates, play a significant mechanical role in allowing a turtle shell to respond optimally to a range of loading regimes. In this contribution, qualitative and quantitative aspects of the mechanical behaviour of turtle shell suture regions are investigated by means of mathematical modelling. Notable features of the model include: (i) a geometrically realistic three dimensional model for the suture geometry; (ii) taking the hyperelastic, anisotropic and incompressible nature of the suture material

An indentation-based approach to determine the elastic constants of soft anisotropic tissues.

Characterization of the mechanical properties of tissue can help to understand tissue mechanobiology, including disease diagnosis and progre … al indenter showed the aspect ratio of the contact area, giving a generalized sense of the level of anisotropy, and instrumented indentation determined the indentation modulus. A parametric study using finite element simulation of the indentation tests established the relationship between the aspect ratio of contact and the non-dimensional ratios, Ex/Ey and …

Biophysical numerical model for pulsed field ablation.

Pulsed-Field Ablation (PFA) is a non-thermal technique for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Predictive numerical models capable of reli … t lesion sizes. Using this transmembrane voltage-based criterion, we demonstrate that fiber-induced anisotropy strongly influences lesion morphology, leading to markedly different lesion shapes along and across the myocardial fibers. In particular, the proposed approach improves the prediction of lesion width-to-depth ratios, which are poorly captured by sta …

Anisotropic fracture mechanics of pre-cracked T4,4,4-Graphyne Nanosheets: Effects of crack geometry and temperature.

An atomistic study is conducted to elucidate the fracture behavior of pristine and centrally pre-cracked T4,4,4-graphyne nanosheets (150 Å × 150 Å) under uniaxial tension in both X- and Y-directions. Stress-strain responses are analyzed as functions of crack length (30-60 Å), orientation (0°-90°), and temperature (200-1000 K). Elastic modulus degradation is captured by power-law and trigonometric models, yielding high correlation coefficients. Ultimate tensile strength and fracture strain are shown to decline with increasing crack length and temperature, while toughness and mode I fracture tou

Histological outcome evaluation of selected brain preparation protocols for white fiber dissection.

BACKGROUND: White fiber dissection is essential for studying brain connections. However, preparation protocols have not been validated. METHODS: We microstructurally analyzed Klingler's brain preparation method and freezing process and assessed changes under two protocols:freeze-only and freeze-thaw. The microstructure changes of these protocols were evaluated by measuring the ratio of the total gap area to the white matter area and determining the mean eccentricity value to assess the degree of anisotropy. RESULTS: Sixty hemispheres were allocated to ten different freezing protocols. In the…

A novel tube law analysis under anisotropic external load.

Mathematical and physical modeling of flows in collapsible pipes often relates the flow area to the difference between the internal and the external pressures (i.e. the transmural pressure). The relation is used to model the conduits of the human body transporting biological fluids, is called tube law and usually considers the transmural pressure resulting from isotropic external pressure only. We provide a new empirical tube law considering anisotropic conditions of the external load; our formulation is based on the hypothesis, supported by clinical and experimental findings, that in physiolo

Obsessive compulsive symptom dimensions are linked to altered white-matter microstructure in a community sample of youth.

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) are common in school-aged children and predict the development of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). W … opathology. Contamination symptoms had no white-matter correlates. Secondary analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA) revealed distinct white-matter abnormalities, suggesting that fixel-based and FA analyses identify distinct features of white matter relevant to psychopathology. These findings suggest that OCS dimensions correlate with dissociable abnormalitie …

The role of white matter abnormality in the left anterior corona radiata: In relation to formal thought disorder in patients with schizophrenia.

White matter abnormality has been widely reported in patients with schizophrenia (Sz). However, few studies have focused on the relationship between the white matter deficit and formal thought disorder (FTD). Moreover, the role of genetic high risk in FTD-related white matter deficit remains unclear. The present study recruited 46 Sz patients, 18 unaffected first-degree relatives of Sz patients, and 29 healthy controls. There was a widespread fractional anisotropy (FA) reduction in Sz. In addition, reduced FA in the left anterior corona radiata was related to more severe FTD symptoms in Sz. Ho…

Mapping of retardance, diattenuation and polarizance vector on Poincare sphere for diagnosis and classification of cervical precancer.

The mapping of diattenuation, polarizance and retardance vector (normalized Stokes vector) on Poincare sphere, evaluated from Mueller matrix of optically anisotropic stromal region of cervical tissues, is presented for cervical precancer detection and its staging. This reveals that the changes in the polarization states shown by these normalized Stokes vectors corresponds to the degradation of linearly arranged collagen fibers, breakage of the collagen cross links in the stromal region and change in the density of scattering sites when cervical cancer evolves. The distinct nature of real and i

An investigation of layer-specific tissue biomechanics of porcine atrioventricular valve anterior leaflets.

Atrioventricular heart valves (AHVs) are composed of structurally complex and morphologically heterogeneous leaflets. The coaptation of these leaflets during the cardiac cycle facilitates unidirectional blood flow. Valve regurgitation is treated preferably by surgical repair if possible or replacement based on the disease state of the valve tissue. A comprehensive understanding of valvular morphology and mechanical properties is crucial to refining computational models, serving as a patient-specific diagnostic and surgical tool for preoperative planning. Previous studies have modeled the stres

Dictating anisotropic electric conductivity of a transparent copper nanowire coating by the surface structure of wood.

In this article, a robust, air-stable, flexible and transparent copper (Cu) nanowire (NW) network coating on the surface of the wood is presented, based on a fusion welding of the Cu NWs by photonic curing. Thereby, an anisotropic conductivity can be achieved, which is originating from the structural organization of the wood body and its surface. Furthermore, the Cu NWs are protected from oxidation or wear by a commercially available paraffin wax-polyolefin, which also results in surface water repellency. The developed processing steps present a facile and flexible routine for applying Cu NW t

Molecular dynamics simulations of weak detonations.

Detonation of a three-dimensional reactive nonisotropic molecular crystal is modeled using molecular dynamics simulations. The detonation process is initiated by an impulse, followed by the creation of a stable fast reactive shock wave. The terminal shock velocity is independent of the initiation conditions. Further analysis shows supersonic propagation decoupled from the dynamics of the decomposed material left behind the shock front. The dependence of the shock velocity on crystal nonlinear compressibility resembles solitary behavior. These properties categorize the phenomena as a weak deton

Exploratory analyses showed that deeper sleep was associated with lower white-matter anisotropy, reflected in reduced fractional anisotropy and kurtosis fractional anisotropy within major projection and association pathways. In the gray matter, associations with sleep depth were more pronounced, with lower axial, mean, and radial diffusivities …
