Objective: Evidence for the duration of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) after the correction of craniosynostosis in children is scarce. We evaluated the necessary duration of PAP to ensure a minimal rate of postoperative wound infections. Methods: In this monocentric, retrospective, and prospective pilot study, two PAP protocols were compared. From August 2017 to May 2018, treatment group 1 (TG 1) was treated using the standard PAP protocol with at least three doses of antibiotics. Between May 2018 and March 2019, a shortened PAP with a single-shot administration was given to treatm…

Dentists prescribe 10% of all outpatient antibiotic prescriptions, writing more than 25.7 million prescriptions per year. Many are for proph … American Dental Association, and American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons' guidelines on dental antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of endocarditis and prosthetic joint infections. We provide experience on how to engage private-practice dentists and OS in dental stewardship using a community-based program.

CONTEXT: The use of perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis has been consistently considered an effective means of reducing the risk of surgical site infections. However, inappropriate use of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis is associated with complications such as reduced treatment efficacy, development of antibiotic resistance, and increased health-care costs.
AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate the adherence to international/national guidelines regarding the use of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis in the perioperative period.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: King Faisal Specialist Hospital an…

We describe a case of Streptococcus viridans endocarditis in a 17-year-old female with congenital ventricular septal defect, that followed shortly after performing naval piercing. She was eventually treated with penicillin with complete recovery. We review other cases from the literature of piercing-associated endocarditis, and suggest that individuals at particularly high risk might be considered for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to such procedures.

Septic complications are rare following laparoscopic cholecystectomy if prophylactic antibiotics are given, as demonstrated in previous studies. Antibiotic treatment may be unnecessary and, therefore, undesirable, so we compared two forms of prophylaxis: a cephalosporin antibiotic and bag extraction of the dissected gallbladder. A total of 76 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomised to either receive an antibiotic or to have their gallbladder removed from the abdomen in a plastic bag. Complicated cases were excluded. There was a total of 6 wound infections (7.9%), 3 in

In a prospective randomized trial, 422 patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass were studied for comparing two types of prophylactic antibiotic treatment. One group, 204 patients, received 4 doses of cefotaxime for 2 days. The other group, 198 patients, received 6 doses of benzylpenicillin combined with cloxacillin for 3 days. Sixty percent received the planned cefotaxime prophylaxis (CTX), while 43.4% received the planned combined benzylpenicillin with cloxacillin prophylaxis (BPC). This was because several patients in both groups required additional antibiotic

Fifty-five patients referred for intravenous nutrition were randomised to receive either vancomycin (500 mg) or no vancomycin immediately before catheter insertion. Catheter insertion and management were standard in all patients. The mean duration of intravenous feeding was similar in both groups (vancomycin: 17.7 +/- 9.6 days; no vancomycin: 16.5 +/- 8.8 days). Overall, the bacteriologically confirmed catheter-related sepsis was 25% and was not reduced by the prophylactic administration of vancomycin.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplant recipients are at high risk of bacterial surgical site infection (SSI) following transplantation. However, they also have increased risks of antibiotic complications such as C. difficile and resistant organism infections. The optimal duration of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis for liver transplantation is uncertain.
METHODS: We analyzed infection outcomes in a total of 192 patients before and after a protocol change that shortened antibiotic prophylaxis duration at our institution. Durations were risk-stratified with longer durations for patients hospitalized…

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to assess the treatment results in patients with cerebellar infarctions and attempt to determine the features influencing the results.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have analysed 12 patients with cerebellar infarctions treated from 1987 to 1996. The patients were admitted to hospital in the period between 24 hours and 37 days after onset. The level of consciousness on admission was assessed according to the Glasgow Coma Scale and results of treatment were assessed according to the Glasgow Outcome Scale at the time of discharge. The CT, MR, angio-MR, cerebral arter

BACKGROUND: Patients with a history of penicillin allergy are often given a less suitable non-ß-lactam antibiotic as single-shot peri - operative prophylaxis, for fear of an allergic reaction. This endangers these patients' health, particularly exposing them to a higher risk of wound infection.
METHODS: With the aid of a quality management tool and three iterative "Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA)" cycles, we developed and evaluated an algorithm for the safe administration of single-shot cefuroxime as perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.
RESULTS: 604…

BACKGROUND: Although guidelines suggest administering antibiotics 12 to 18 hours after the rupture of membranes in women with term premature rupture of membranes, in practice, clinicians tend to initiate prophylactic antibiotics as soon as possible to avoid risk of infection.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether early administration of prophylactic antibiotics for term premature rupture of membranes reduces the incidence of maternal and neonatal infections.
STUDY DESIGN: This multicenter prospective cohort study included women with term premature rupture of membranes. The participan

BACKGROUND: Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) is an important preventive measure, aiming to minimize surgical site infections. However, despite evidence-based guidelines, adherence to SAP protocols remains suboptimal in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the adequacy of SAP in a high-complexity hospital and investigate associated factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional design was conducted, involving surgeries performed by expert teams in cardiology, urology, neurology, and gastrointestinal. SAP prescriptions were evaluated based on indication, antibiotic choice, dosage, a…

UNLABELLED: Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis is one of the most useful measures to prevent surgical wound infection.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this project is to evaluate the appropriateness of the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in surgical procedures performed in Spanish hospitals, both globally and according to the type of surgery performed.
METHOD: For this purpose, an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, and multicentre study has been designed to collect all the variables that allow the evaluation of the appropriateness of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis by comparing the prescribed t…

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening complication in patients with advanced cirrhosis. Prophylactic Norfloxacin used to be considered effective in SBP prevention, but in recent years its efficacy has been partially compromised by increasing quinolone-resistant bacteria. However, whether the effects of alternative prophylactic regimens are superior to norfloxacin remains controversial. The goal of this study is to compare the effects of norfloxacin with other antibiotics in SBP prophylaxis for cirrhotic patients.

OBJECTIVE: Rising antibiotic resistance could reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics in preventing postoperative infections. We investigated trends in the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis regimens for 3 commonly performed surgical procedures-appendectomy, cesarean section, and colorectal surgery-and 1 invasive diagnostic procedure, transrectal prostate biopsy (TRPB).
DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: We searched PubMed and Cochrane databases (through October 31, 2017) for randomized control trials (RCTs) that measured the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis for 4 index …
