BACKGROUND: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts are relatively uncommon. Rarely, large cysts presented with spinal cord compression requiring surgical intervention.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a patient with a progressively enlarging spinal extradural arachnoid cyst causing worsening right S1 radiculopathy and gastrocnemius muscle atrophy. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies revealed an S1 motor radiculopathy. Serial magnetic resonance imaging findings confirmed enlargement of the small cyst originating from the sacral thecal sac on the right while 2 smaller cysts on the left remained

INTRODUCTION: Spinal bronchogenic cysts are rare findings, with only four cases of lumbar bronchogenic cysts reported in the literature. All of these bronchogenic cysts involved the conus medullaris. We present the first case of a lumbar bronchogenic cyst and arachnoid cyst arising from the cauda equina in a 68-year-old male. Uniquely, this bronchogenic cyst also contained components of an arachnoid cyst.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a compressive cystic lesion at the level of the L3 vertebra splaying the cauda equina. An L3/L4 laminectomy was performed with marsupia

Vago-glossopharyngeal neuralgia (VGPN) is a rarely seen disease when compared to trigeminal neuralgia. When the pain is resistant to medical therapy, microvascular decompression can be performed if a vascular conflict is suspected on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, arachnoid pathology may play a role in VGPN. We report two cases of VGPN caused by tethered arachnoid, associated with a vascular contact in which pain was reduced by freeing rootlets from arachnoid compression. We report two cases relating to 50-year-old and 30-year-old men with a history of electric shooting pain tr

INTRODUCTION: Brain arachnoid cysts (AC) are congenital or acquired malformations. Their prevalence in children ranges between 0.2 and 2.3% … s to the hypothesis that the inflammatory process due to subdural haemorrhage may locally result in arachnoiditis, and thus to the creation of a neomembrane, and eventually to cyst formation. This is also the case with the development of post-traumatic spinal AC.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral temporal lobe agenesis/hypogenesis along with middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts (ACs) is extremely rare, and very few cases have been reported in the literature.
METHODS: We present the case of 2-year-old female presenting with chief complaints of headache, vomiting, and fever. There was a history of premature delivery in the seventh month and up-rolling of eyes since birth.
RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging findings revealed bilateral temporal lobe agenesis with bilateral ACs, along with encephalomalacia in both parietal lobes. Ultrasound abdomen findings and bioc

We present a 2.5-year-old child suffering from acute hydrocephalus. First, the child was diagnosed with aseptic viral meningitis. The PCR of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was positive for enterovirus. Subsequently, MRI revealed that the hydrocephalus was caused by a cyst in the third ventricle. During ventriculoscopy, the cyst had all aspects of an arachnoid cyst. An endoscopic fenestration and partial removal of the cyst was performed, combined with a ventriculocisternostomy. The coincidental finding of viral meningitis and a third ventricle arachnoid cyst in a patient with acute hydrocephalu

Background and purposeAlthough often asymptomatic, enlarging sacral arachnoid cysts can also cause significant discomfort. These symptomatic sacral arachnoid cysts require specific treatments to facilitate local decompression. The main drawback of the surgical managements is the high risk of recurrence and complications. To decrease risks, we had been attempting to seek a simple and safe method to manage the symptomatic sacral arachnoid cysts. CT-guided percutaneous fibrin glue therapy is a new nonsurgical alternative. To evaluate the efficacy of the novel nonsurgical approach, we conducted th

INTRODUCTION: Intrathecal (IT) medication delivery is a commonly used technique for the treatment of chronic intractable pain. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) loculation at the catheter tip has been described as a cause of progressive loss of drug effect that can often be difficult to diagnose.
METHODS: The clinical course of a 56-year-old woman was reviewed, including past imaging studies.
RESULTS: The patient presented with acute lower extremity paresis secondary to air trapped within an arachnoid cyst thought to be due to long-term use of IT morphine and an undiagnosed CSF loculation. She rapid

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine whether arachnoid tissue or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling is valuable for risk stratification in children with posterior fossa brain tumors.
METHODS: Arachnoid tissue and CSF from the cisterna magna (CSFCM) was sampled at the time of primary tumor resection. Results were compared with conventional staging methods (M stage) and correlated with patient outcome.
RESULTS: Eighty-three patients were enrolled in the study. Arachnoid infiltration was identified in 11 of 80 (13.8%) and CSFCM was positive in 20 of 77 (26.0%) specimens. Arachnoid i

INTRODUCTION: Extradural spinal cyst is a rare cause of compression myelopathy. It is usually solitary and its typical location is posterior to the spinal cord. We present a case of multiple spinal arachnoid cysts causing diffuse myelomalacia secondary to a significant compression of the spinal cord with no symptom relief after surgical decompression.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old female patient presented to our hospital complaining of progressive weakness and numbness of both lower extremities for the last 2 months, being more prominent on the right side. Her history was significant for back pa

Arachnoid cysts represent a common, innocent, finding in routine neuroimaging of headache patients. We present the first report of symptomatic migraine with aura caused by the spontaneous rupture of a middle fossa arachnoid cyst into the subdural space. Brain imaging enabled an accurate diagnosis and, subsequently, adequate surgical management.

Sub arachnoid block (SAB) is often perceived safe by many anesthesiologists and other faculties but is also not completely safe choice especially in pregnant females, as the incidence of complications and local anaesthetic agent toxicity is high in these groups of patients. Here we present four such cases out of the seventeen patients over a period of six months, who developed apnea and transient loss of consciousness after spinal anesthesia for lower segment caesarean section. Typically all these patients after spinal anesthesia developed difficulty in breathing, became apnoea and had loss of

We present a 6-week-old girl, referred because of failed newborn hearing screening in the right ear. Click-evoked oto-acoustic emissions were present in both ears, auditory brainstem responses (ABR) were present in the left but totally absent in the right ear. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study revealed a large arachnoid cyst in the right cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and a diagnosis of "auditory neuropathy/auditory dyssynchrony" was established. A microsurgical resection of the cyst wall and fenestration was performed by a retro sigmoid approach. This is the first case in the literature

Intracranial arachnoid cyst occurs most frequently in the middle fossa. Most of them are asymptomatic with or without neurological involvement. However some develop neurological deficits such as increased intracranial pressure, which manifests as headache, epilepsy and focal neurological deficits. Here we present an adult case of arachnoid cyst in the middle cranial fossa: the patient demonstrated rapidly deteriorating visual field defect and decreased visual acuity. The symptoms were improved by an emergency surgery. This is the first case report describing optic nerve compression due to an a

Arachnoid cysts are benign intracranial lesions that are typically diagnosed incidentally. We describe the case of a 56-year-old man who presented with a multiloculated arachnoid cyst of the middle cranial fossa that extended into the sphenoid sinus. The lesion was identified on computed tomography of the head, which had been obtained for an unrelated investigation. However, establishing a definitive diagnosis proved to be difficult. Because the cyst had caused extensive skull base erosion, the patient was managed conservatively with close observation. We report the radiographic progression of

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diverticula are uncommonly associated with anterior cranial base tumors. When they occur, they often complicate the surgical management of these tumors via a transsphenoidal approach. This report examines the effectiveness of transsphenoidal surgery in the treatment of these rare entities.
METHODS: We performed a review of four sellar and parasellar tumors (three pituitary adenomas and one chordoma) that contained an arachnoid diverticulum communicating with the intracranial subarachnoid space.
RESULTS: One of these tumors (a prolactinoma) was successf

PURPOSE: To describe the CT and MRI features of 3 cases of arachnoid cyst of the petrous apex.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three patients with isolated trigeminal neuralgia, trigeminal hypoesthesia, and sinusitis. Axial and coronal CT images were obtained. T1W, FSE T2W, FLAIR, T2*W and diffusion-weighted MR sequences were obtained.
RESULTS: In all cases, both CT and MRI showed expansile lesions eroding the petrous apex. Lesions were hypodense on CT and isointense to CSF on MRI, without contrast enhancement. In one case, the lesion was contiguous with Meckel's cave with temporal fossa and sphenoid
