Architectural differences in the anterior and middle compartments of the pelvic floor of young-adult and postmenopausal females.

The pelvic floor guards the passage of the pelvic organs to the exterior. The near-epidemic prevalence of incontinence in women continues to generate interest in the functional anatomy of the pelvic floor. However, due to its complex architecture and poor accessibility, the classical 'dissectional' approach has been unable to come up with a satisfactory description, so that many aspects of its anatomy continue to raise debate. For this reason, we opted for a 'sectional' approach, using the Chinese Visible Human project (four females, 21-35 years) and the Visible Human Project (USA; one female,

GeriAIGastroNet: AI-Assisted Gastrointestinal Polyp Segmentation and Severity-Based Triage for Tele-Gastroenterology in Underserved Geriatric Populations.

Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and early detection of gastrointestinal (GI) polyps through endoscopy is critical for improving patient outcomes. However, access to specialist gastroenterology care remains severely limited in Federal Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), particularly for high-acuity geriatric patients. This study proposes GeriAIGastroNet, a clinically oriented deep learning framework designed to support AI-assisted tele-gastroenterology workflows in resource-limited settings, with the primary objective of

Quantum dot-FRET viral biosensors: Materials, surface chemistry, and recognition architectures.

Viral outbreaks continue to require diagnostic platforms that are sensitive, selective, rapid, and compatible with decentralized use. Quantum dot (QD)-based Förster resonance energy transfer (QD-FRET) biosensors offer a promising route because viral recognition can be translated into ratiometric optical signals through nanoscale changes in donor-acceptor distance, orientation, and local interfacial environment. However, QD-FRET performance is not determined by photophysics alone. It emerges from the coupled behavior of QD composition, core/shell architecture, ligand-shell packing, hydration, p

Reusable dialdehyde nanocellulose cryogels for desalination of multi-layered porous structures.

Designing bio-based porous materials that combine high water uptake, mechanical resilience, and reusability without requiring additional components or crosslinkers remains a central challenge in sustainable materials science. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based porous materials offer low density, high surface area, hydrophilicity, and tunable surface chemistry. However, combining high water uptake with structural stability during repeated hydration-dehydration cycles remains challenging in additive-free CNC structures, as their stability when wet typically requires crosslinking, surface modifica

When long pulse is not enough: inferior dusting efficiency of pulsed thulium:YAG compared with Ho:YAG and thulium fiber laser in a standardized in vitro renal model.

Pulsed thulium: YAG (p-Tm: YAG) and thulium fiber laser (TFL) differ in pulse architecture despite similar wavelengths. We asked whether long-pulse p-Tm: YAG achieves ablation efficiency and thermal behaviour comparable to holmium: YAG (Ho: YAG) and TFL under standardized low-power dusting settings. Fifty-four BegoStone phantoms were treated in an in vitro renal collecting system model, 18 per platform, at 0.8 J and 25 Hz through a 7.5 Fr single-use flexible ureteroscope with gravity irrigation and no access sheath. Pulse duration was not standardized: Ho: YAG and p-Tm: YAG were long-pulse, TF

Classification of Alzheimer's disease stages from magnetic resonance images using deep learning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive type of dementia characterized by loss of memory and other cognitive abilities, including speech. Since AD is a progressive disease, detection in the early stages is essential for the appropriate care of the patient throughout its development, going from asymptomatic to a stage known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and then progressing to dementia and severe dementia; is worth mentioning that everyone suffers from cognitive impairment to some degree as we age, but the relevant task here is to identify which people are most likely to develop AD. Integrated transcriptomic and epigenomic profiling reveals conserved molecular subtypes across systemic autoimmune diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) frequently share overlapping clinical features, yet exhibit substantial intradisease heterogeneity in organ involvement and severity. This study aimed to define conserved molecular subtypes across these systemic autoimmune diseases (SADs) and delineate their transcriptional and epigenetic underpinnings. METHODS: We profiled 262 treatment-naïve Chinese Han patients (RA: n = 109; SLE: n = 69; pSS: n = 84), predominantly female (83.2%), who were divided into discovery (n = 119) and val

Epigenetic architecture of the developing brain.

This chapter reviews the evolution of DNA methylation programs during brain development, focusing on how DNA methylation patterns define cell identity and regulate gene expression. It traces early hypotheses about tissue-specific DNA methylation and highlights limitations of bulk tissue analysis. Advances in genome-wide mapping, cell sorting, and single-cell sequencing have clarified the roles of CG and non-CG methylation in neuronal and glial differentiation. The chapter details how enhancer and gene body methylation correlate with transcriptional activity and how transcription factors, like

Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 and Cabozantinib for Temporomandibular Joint Cartilage Repair: Murine and Porcine Injury Models.

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is characterized by progressive degeneration of the fibrocartilaginous articular surface. We previously demonstrated that combined bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibition promotes endogenous hyaline cartilage regeneration in appendicular joints. Whether this regenerative strategy can be extended to the specialized fibrocartilage of the TMJ remains unknown. In this study, we evaluated the regenerative potential of BMP-2 combined with cabozantinib, an FDA-approved multikinase inhibitor with acti

Uniaxial Strain-Driven Ferroelastic Domain Tuning in LaAlO 3.

Multiferroic domain walls in functional oxides exhibit properties distinct from the bulk and are increasingly exploited as active elements in nanoelectronic and photonic devices. Deterministic tuning of domain populations has typically remained limited to local solutions, or removal with temperature. Here, the manipulation of ferroelastic domain structure, and removal of the twin walls between them in single-crystal LaAlO 3 using in situ uniaxial strain is demonstrated. Combining atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy with first-principles calculations, the microsc

Hierarchical Gene Cluster Regulation Across Vertebrate Skins: Developmental Control of Keratin Gene Expression.

Developmental competence allows tissues to respond to inductive cues before committing to specialized forms, but how this potential is encoded at clustered gene-family loci is poorly understood. We use vertebrate skin to address this problem. Epidermis responds to regional dermal signals before committing to feather, scale, or differentiated programs, and α-keratin loci provide a stringent genomic test: separated type-I/type-II clusters show coordinated transcriptional pairing, yet individual keratin genes are selectively deployed across appendage, differentiation, and disease states. Using ch

Sulfone Activation Triggered by Iodide Anion for Photoinduced Fluoroalkylations.

Radical fluoroalkylation via electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex photochemistry stands out as a particularly attractive approach, owing to its mild conditions and the absence of an external metal photocatalyst or organic dye. Fluoroalkyl sulfones, valued for their stability, accessibility, and structural tunability, have emerged as versatile precursors for radical fluoroalkylation. Herein, we present a photocatalyst-free and straightforward method for direct fluoroalkylation through an EDA complex, utilizing inexpensive iodide anion as an electron donor and fluoroalkyl sulfones as acceptors.

CryoSeek identification of glycofibrils with diverse compositions and structural assemblies.

CryoSeek is a research strategy that employs cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to discover bio-entities from accessible sources, supplemented with AI-facilitated data processing and bioinformatic analyses. Here we report CryoSeek-based characterization of more glycofibrils isolated from the Tsinghua Lotus Pond (TLP), named TLP-0/2/3/4b/IPT, with resolutions ranging from 3.0-3.5 Å. These glycofibrils, all covered with dense glycoshells, have various mass percentiles of the central protein components. TLP-0 has no protein at all, TLP-2 and TLP-4b each only have a linear chain of di- or tetra-pe
