BACKGROUND: Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICPIs) are promising new drugs in treatment of advanced tumours targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte a … treated by ipilimumab. Kidney biopsy revealed acute interlobular and juxtaglomerular granulomatous arteritis, which has not yet been reported in patients treated by ICPIs. Kidney function partially recovered after ipilimumab discontinuation and oral prednisone. Unfortunately, the patient died a few months later from progression of his melanoma.

We report the rare case of an 80-year-old male patient with hypertrophic pachymeningoencephalitis that may be associated with temporal arteritis. The patient presented to our neurological department with a 2-week history of latent paresis and ataxia affecting his right hand. He had been diagnosed with temporal arteritis 12 years earlier. Brain MRI showed an enhancement of the left-sided frontoparietal meninges with oedema of the adjacent tissue of the precentral and postcentral cortex. A leptomeningeal biopsy was performed. An autoimmune-mediated immunoglobulin G4-associated hypertrophic pachy…

PurposeGiant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis that affects medium-to-large-caliber arteries. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential as involvement of the ophthalmic artery or its branches may cause blindness. Radiographic findings may be variable and non-specific leading to delay in diagnosis. We conducted a review of the literature on neuroimaging findings in GCA and present a retrospective case series from tertiary-care ophthalmic referral centers of three patients with significant neuroimaging findings in biopsy-proven GCA.MethodsRetrospective case series of biopsy-proven G…

Takayasu's arteritis is an inflammatory disease with a variety of manifestations, such as cardiac involvement. We describe a 52-year-old woman with clinical and echocardiographic manifestations mimicking infectious endocarditis, such as periaortic and mital-aortic intervalvular fibrosa abscess with extension to the anterior mitral leaflet. However, no infective tissue was discovered intraoperatively. Pathological evaluation demonstrated Takayasu's arteritis. To the best of our knowledge, Takayasu's arteritis can involve mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa and imitate infectious endocarditis.

Medial medullary syndrome (MMS) is a rare type of stroke which results due to occlusion of the anterior spinal artery or vertebral artery or its branches. In this case report we present a patient who developed MMS secondary to Takayasu arteritis (TA). TA is a chronic inflammatory arteritis primarily involving the arch of aorta and its branches, which in our patient resulted in occlusion of subclavian arteries as well as infarction of the medial medulla bilaterally. To our knowledge this is the first time that MMS has been found to occur secondary to TA.

Giant cell arteritis still results in high morbidity related to systemic complications involving the eyes, the central nervous system, the heart and the aorta. Therefore, reliable diagnostic criteria are required in giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), to detect and manage at early stages patients with giant cell arteritis and PMR. Indeed, diagnostic criteria of giant cell arteritis and PMR have been validated. Taken together, first we propose to review the diagnostic criteria of giant cell arteritis (ACR, GRACG) and PMR (Bird, Jones-Hazleman, Chuang-Hunder, Dasgupta). Second…

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA) remains challenging, particularly with regard to evaluation of extracranial arterial disease.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to retrospectively review extracranial involvement in patients with GCA and/or polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially 3-dimensional contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography images of the aortic arch and its branches.
METHODS: Clinical information, biopsy status, and MRI examinations of 28 patients with GCA/PMR were reviewed. Patient ima…

Giant cell arteritis, a large-sized vessel vasculitis, may be associated with musculoskeletal proximal (polymyalgia rheumatica) or distal manifestations. A 68-year-old woman, who had inflammatory pelvic girdle pain, was diagnosed with giant cell arteritis and was successfully treated with corticosteroids. The magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography revealed a bilateral bursitis and pelvic girdle enthesopathy. Bursitis is the main anatomic lesion occurring in polymyalgia rheumatica and can be underlined by ultrasonography.

Giant cell arteritis is a relatively common form of systemic vasculitis, best known for its predisposition to affect the extracranial branches of the carotid artery and associated potential for visual loss. Additional vascular manifestations include stroke, aortic aneurysm or dissection, and even aortic rupture. Cardiac manifestations include coronary artery disease, aortic valve insufficiency, or left ventricular dysfunction, which may occur independently from the valvular disease or hypertension. Physicians need to be vigilant for this disorder, particularly because the tragic end-organ outc…

The authors report a patient with biopsy-proven temporal arteritis who manifested Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS). Treatment with steroid resulted in prompt resolution of visual hallucinations, despite persistent visual loss, suggesting that cerebral ischemia is a cofactor for the development of CBS.

Hepatic fibrin-ring granulomas were found in a 70-year-old man with prolonged fever and inflammatory syndrome. Diagnosis of giant cell arteritis was confirmed by temporal artery biopsy. Other diseases usually associated with fibrin-ring granulomas in liver, such as Q fever, cytomegalovirus hepatitis, infectious mononucleosis, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, allopurinol treatment, and visceral leishmaniasis, were ruled out. This report suggests that giant cell arteritis should be considered as an additional cause of hepatic fibrin-ring granulomas.
