A chronic chromoblastomycosis model by Fonsecaea monophora in Wistar rat.

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic, cutaneous and subcutaneous infection characterized by verrucose lesions. It is primarily caused by Fonsecaea monophora in southern China and responds poorly to available therapies. In order to investigate the pathogenicity of Fonsecaea monophora, we established a chronic chromoblastomycosis animal model in Wistar rats. Suspensions of 2x10(6) cfu conidia and hyphal fragments were intracutaneous (ic) and subcutaneous (sc) on either side of the backs of the rats. Small nodules were formed at the inoculation sites within the first week after inoculation. By the se

Extensive long-standing chromomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi: three cases with relevant improvement under voriconazole therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate voriconazole in the treatment of extensive cases of chromomycosis. Chromomycosis is a chronic infection, which is extremely difficult to eradicate, and is caused by dematiaceous (dark-colored) fungi which affect the skin and subcutaneous tissues, with Fonsecaea pedrosoi being the major etiologic agent. Drugs such as itraconazole, terbinafine, posaconazole and amphotericin B have been employed with variable results. METHODS: We treated three Caucasian male patients (ages 44, 57 and 77 years), two were farmers and one a trash collector, with long-standing (20, 10 and 21 y

Diversity in antifungal activity of strains of Chromobacterium violaceum from the Brazilian Amazon.

Chromobacterium violaceum is a free-living Gram-negative bacterium found in soil and aquatic habitats; abundantly present in the Brazilian Amazon, it is an important example of exploitable microbial diversity of the tropics. In this study, 24 strains from the Brazilian Amazon and ATCC 12472(T) were investigated for biocontrol potential of seven fungi pathogenic to soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merril] seed. Both cells and the supernatants of two Brazilian strains, 07-1 and 27-1, together with ATCC 12472(T) were strongly antagonistic to six out of the seven fungi. The antifungal activity of the Bra

Cutaneous localized annular chromoblastomycosis.

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a difficult-to-treat dermal mycosis characterized by the presence of round, pigmented, sclerotic bodies formed by black fungi found in polymorphic lesions. According to the morphology of a lesion, different clinical types of the disease have been described. We present three patients who each developed a single, 10-cm diameter, 8 to 15-year-old, well-circumscribed, slow-growing, annular, papulosquamous or papulosquamous-verrucous lesion, with no regression despite the use of topical antifungals. Skin scrapings and biopsies confirmed CBM and microculture defined the

Eumycetoma caused by Cladophialophora bantiana successfully treated with itraconazole.

A 57-year-old male presented with dermatosis of the dorsum of the foot consisting of tumefaction, deformity and sinus tract formation. The direct examination of exudates as well as the biopsy tissue, demonstrated the presence of black granules. A dematiaceous fungus was isolated from the lesions and was identified by ribosomal DNA sequencing as Cladophialophora bantiana. This is the second report of this fungus as an etiologic agent of eumycetoma in humans. Clinical and mycologic cure was achieved after 20 months of treatment with itraconazole at a starting dose of 300 mg/day that was tapered

Hydrothorax in association with Scopulariopsis brumptii in an AIDS patient in Chennai, India.

Over the past decade, an increasing number of opportunistic fungal infections have been reported in immunocompromised subjects. Microascus spp. and their anamorphs Scopulariopsis spp. have been recovered from a wide geographical range. We report a case of Scopulariopsis brumptii in a 27-year-old man with AIDS presenting with breathlessness, pericardial effusion and hydrothorax in Chennai, southern India, in February 2007. Because of respiratory arrest, the patient was intubated. However, the patient developed obstructive shock and died due to cardiac dysfunctions. This report underlines the ne

Changes in lipid composition of Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici conidia produced on wheat leaves treated with heptanoyl salicylic acid.

Treatment of wheat leaves with heptanoyl salicylic acid (HS) and trehalose at concentrations of 0.1 and 15 g l(-1), prior to fungal inoculation, resulted in 40% and 60% protection, respectively, against powdery mildew. The total lipid composition of Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici (Bgt) conidia, the causal agent of wheat powdery mildew, was compared when produced on wheat leaves, respectively, untreated and treated with the two elicitors, HS and trehalose. An obvious effect was observed on lipid composition (sterol and fatty acid (FA)) of Bgt conidia produced on wheat leaves treated with HS. A

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis caused by Fonsecaea monophora.

We report a case of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis in a 53-year-old immunocompetent diabetic male, caused by Fonsecaea monophora. Computerized tomography of the brain revealed an abscess, which yielded F. monophora in pure culture. The patient's condition deteriorated on treatment with voriconazole and 5-fluorocytosine, and improved subsequently with high-dose itraconazole. The genus Fonsecaea has recently been revised and the new species F. monophora generated from molecular analysis of isolates, most of which were originally identified as Fonsecaea pedrosoi. This is the fourth case of cerebral i

The potential of the lichen symbiosis to cope with the extreme conditions of outer space II: germination capacity of lichen ascospores in response to simulated space conditions.

Complementary to the already well-studied microorganisms, lichens, symbiotic organisms of the mycobiont (fungi) and the photobiont (algae), were used as "model systems" in which to examine the ecological potential to resist to extreme environments of outer space. Ascospores (sexual propagules of the mycobiont) of the lichens Fulgensia bracteata, Xanthoria elegans and Xanthoria parietina were exposed to selected space-simulating conditions (up to 16 h of space vacuum at 10(-3) Pa and UV radiation at 160 nm < or = lambda < or = 400 nm), while embedded in the lichen fruiting bodies. After exposur

Scytalidium dimidiatum causing recalcitrant subcutaneous lesions produces melanin.

Scytalidium dimidiatum is a pigmented dematiaceous coelomycete that typically causes chronic superficial skin diseases and onychomycosis, as well as deeper infections, such as subcutaneous abscesses, mycetoma, and even fungemia in immunocompromised patients. A second species, Scytalidium hyalinum, has hyaline hyphae and arthroconidia and is considered by some authors to be an albino mutant of S. dimidiatum. This study aimed to confirm the presence of melanin or melanin-like compounds (which have been previously implicated in the virulence of other fungal pathogens) in S. dimidiatum from a pati

Allergic bronchopulmonary disease caused by Bipolaris hawaiiensis presenting as a necrotizing pneumonia: case report and review of literature.

We report a case of allergic bronchopulmonary disease caused by Bipolaris hawaiisensis in an immunocompetent host, presenting with symptoms and radiographic findings suggestive of necrotizing pneumonia. Cultures of the plugs and bronchial washing yielded the pathogenic fungi. Laboratory tests revealed eosinophilia and elevation of serum IgE. This patient was successfully treated with steroids, amphotericin B lipid complex, and itraconazole. Review of 10 previously reported cases and their clinical manifestations and treatment are presented.

Quarry resto … ectively, due to higher cation exchange capacity and better plant growth. The relative abundance of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota increased by 24 % and 47 % with biochar application when C. fissa was planted, which was likely associated with the improved nutrient cycling and soil fertility. Even though adding biochar to bare soil was found to increase the com …
