No previous data regarding non-invasive Aspergillus sinusitis (NIAS) treated by endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has stated any relevance to pre-operative evaluations, disease entities, and the reversibility of symptoms and the sinus mucosa. This prospective study of 31 patients with NIAS and treated by ESS (Strammberger's method) was designed to tackle the above problems. All patients were followed post-operatively by endoscopy once a week. The most refractory symptom was post-nasal dripping. A 34-year-old man with chronic myelogenous leukemia developed hemoptysis, pain in the left side of the chest, and a systolic heart murmur eight weeks following an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. His clinical status deteriorated, and he died ten weeks after transplantation. Autopsy revealed unsuspected disseminated aspergillosis, including the unusual finding of Aspergillus pancarditis and pericarditis. Cardiac aspergillosis is a uniformly lethal disease in immunocompromised persons and must be aggressively diagnosed following early symptoms.

Aspergillus terreus is an uncommon cause of human disease. A patient with acute myelomonocytic leukemia is described who developed an invasive pulmonary infection with A terreus characterized by an air-crescent sign on chest roentgenogram. Previous reports of A terreus infections and the pathogenesis and significance of an air-crescent sign in invasive pulmonary aspergillosis are reviewed.
