Challenging gender-based & obstetric violence: Medical students' evolving perspectives in OBGYN care.

OBJECTIVE: Medical students undergo professional socialization during clinical rotations, which shapes their perceptions and responses to patient care. Obstetric and gender-based violence are pervasive issues in obstetrics and gynecology, where hierarchical dynamics may normalize unethical practices. Our study aimed to explore the perceptions, observations, learning experiences, and beliefs of students regarding gender-based and obstetric violence during their obstetrics and gynecology rotation in Mexico. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods design, incorporating a pre- and post-rotation question

Expanding the thoracic donor Pool: Ethical implications of contemporary donor selection and organ preservation strategies.

BACKGROUND: To address high waiting-list mortality and severe donor shortages in thoracic transplantation, clinical protocols have expanded donor selection criteria to include marginal, elderly, and controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) candidates. Concurrently, ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), ex-vivo heart perfusion (EVHP), and normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) have reconfigured organ preservation. This study evaluates the clinical-ethical challenges triggered by these strategies to optimize graft utilization safely. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted evaluating peer-

Protocol for a mixed-methods feasibility study for the surviving opioid overdose with naloxone education and resuscitation (SOONER) randomised control trial.

INTRODUCTION: The surviving opioid overdose with naloxone education and resuscitation (SOONER) project uses co-design and trial methods to develop and evaluate a point-of-care overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) tool. We plan to conduct a randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of our OEND tool in comparison with best available standard of care by observing participants' performance as a responder to a simulated overdose. Recruiting and retaining people at risk of or likely to witness opioid overdose raises scientific, logistical and bioethical challenges. A fea

[Analysis of the ethical issues raised by a ten-year epidemiology program in French Guiana: limitations of the current legal framework and solutions adopted].

This paper discusses the ethical aspects of a large research program in virology, conducted since 1994 and which has evolved in parallel with the elaboration of bioethics laws in France. This research, which involved the collection of a considerable amount of epidemiological data in the field, focused on epidemiological determinants (mother to child transmission, genetic susceptibility/resistance) of the human oncogenic retrovirus human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). Data were collected from a specific population (Noirs Marrons) living in remote areas in French Guiana (South Americ…

The ethics of excluding women who become pregnant while participating in clinical trials of anti-epileptic medications.

INTRODUCTION: The bioethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice, complemented by ethics committee evaluation, define conduct of clinical trials of anti-epileptic medications (AEM). BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Increased teratogenicity for offspring of women with epilepsy is presented in both lay and scientific literature. SPECIFIC DRUGS--OLDER GENERATION: Teratogenicity of phenobarbitone (PB), phenytoin (PHT), valproate (VPA) and carbamazepine (CBZ) is acknowledged, with drugs, such as trimethadione, being removed from the market because of teratogenicity. SPECIFIC DR

A systematic scoping review and interpretive ethical synthesis of ethical decision-making about physical restraints for older adults in Confucian-influenced care contexts.

AIM: This study aims to map and interpret the evidence on ethical decision-making in the use of physical restraints for older adults, with particular attention to Confucian-influenced family-centred care contexts and comparative international evidence. DESIGN: This study applied a systematic scoping review design combined with an interpretive ethical synthesis. METHODS: The review was guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute approach to scoping reviews and reported with reference to PRISMA principles. Dietary Intake as an Undermeasured Potential Mediator: The Ethical Case for Complete and Transparent Dietary Reporting in GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Trials.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are transforming obesity management, yet landmark trials often incompletely measure and report a central mediator of response: dietary intake. Because GLP-1RAs promote weight loss primarily by suppressing appetite and reducing energy consumption, capturing changes in dietary intake is essential to interpreting efficacy, safety, and translation into clinical care. This perspective argues that failure to measure and report comprehensive dietary intake raises concerns under four core bioethical principles. It undermines autonomy by limiting evi

A narrative review on the therapeutic potential of stem cells in neurodegenerative diseases: advances, insights, and challenges.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease (HD) are set apart by progressive neuronal loss and concomitant functional decline. Traditional therapies are equipped with only symptomatic relief, devoid of neurorestorative properties. Stem-cell-based therapies have the potential to revolutionize neurological care by replenishing lost cells, mitigating inflammation, and fostering a neuroprotective environment. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review aims to appraise the treatment poten

Christian perspectives on palliative sedation: a literature study.

BACKGROUND: Christianity has always been concerned about the fate of the sick and the dying. Charity is one of the seven Christian virtues and is seen as an act of love for one's neighbour. At the same time, Christianity is a strong defender of the dignity of human life, especially the most vulnerable. In the context of advanced disease and end of life, all major Christian traditions (Anglican, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant) advocate appropriate care to protect the dignity of those suffering from illness or facing the prospect of death. This translates into a strong opposition to a

Supermicrosurgical Anastomosis Training Using Chick Embryos within the Egg-in-Cube System.

SUMMARY: Although supermicrosurgery techniques are essential skills for lymphatic surgery or perforator-flap surgery, an ideal training model is yet to be introduced. Living animal models, such as rodents, are considered to be ideal microsurgical training models. However, the use of living animal models is costly and involves bioethical considerations. Hence, the authors developed a novel, cost-effective, highly reproducible, and easy-to-handle supermicrosurgical anastomosis training system using the chicken embryo within the egg-in-cube system. Chick embryos were fertilized in the artificial
