Two sesterterpenes, deoxymanoalide (1) and deoxysecomanoalide (2), were isolated from the nudibranch Chromodoris willani collected in Okinawa and their structures determined on the basis of spectroscopic data and chemical conversions. The mollusk feeds on a sponge containing manoalide (3) and secomanoalide (4) and is likely to biotransform them into 1 and 2. Both 1 and 2 showed moderate antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis and inhibited snake venom phospholipase A2 at 0.2 to 0.5 microM.

The degradation pathway for dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol) under reducing conditions was investigated. Cultures were inoculated with a dinoseb-degrading anaerobic enrichment culture used in field studies. A severe poisoning with intravenous phenytoin in a newborn was treated with peritoneal dialysis in spite of its reported poor effectiveness, the drug being 90% protein-bound. During 10 hours, 1.41 mg/hr were eliminated by biotransformation and 1.80 mg/hr were removed with peritoneal dialysis allowing to suppress quickly life threatening cardiac side effects. This efficacy may be explained by an increase in the unbound protein fraction and a diffusion speed through the peritoneum higher than in older patients.

Biotransformation of ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid using fungus Cunninghamella echinulata resulted in two novel hydroxylated metabolites together with five known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by means of extensive NMR and HR-ESI-MS data analysis. The eight compounds were measured for their cytotoxicity against the human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) and human hepatoblastoma (HepG-2) cell lines. Seven compounds showed no cytotoxicity to the two cell lines. One compound displayed moderate cytotoxicity against HepG-2 and MCF-7 with the IC50 values of 12.6 and 27.1 μM, respectively.

Administration of salicylates during prodromal viral illness has been associated with the development of Reye's syndrome (RS). We studied salicylate biotransformation in RS patients and compared it with those on chronic salicylate therapy for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Cold-adapted strain of Geomyces pannorum P11 was found to mineralize of phosphorus-carbon bond-containing compound--2-aminoethylphosphonic acid (2-AEP, ciliatine). The biodegradation process proceeded in the phosphate-independent manner. Ciliatine-metabolizing enzymes' activity was detectable in cell-free extracts prepared from psychrophilic G. pannorum pregrown on 4 mM 2-AEP.
