Congenital stationary night blindness with negative electroretinogram. A new classification.

An analysis of 64 patients with congenital stationary night blindness showed that all had essentially normal fundi. Electroretinography (ERG) showed a normal a wave with extremely reduced b wave (negative type) when recorded with a single bright white stimulus in the dark. We classified these patients into two groups based on the evaluation of rod ERG and/or psychophysical dark adaptation measured with an 11 degree test target at 15 degrees in the upper part of the retina. One group (35 patients) lacked rod function (complete type). Nine patients could not be classified. No pedigree showed a c…

Risk factors for developing mild nutritional blindness in urban Bangladesh.

Mild vitamin A deficiency may be associated with increased morbidity and mortality among children in developing countries. A community-based case-control study was performed to determine risk factors for mild ophthalmologic manifestations of vitamin A deficiency in urban Bangladeshi children. Cases were identified in children less than 14 years of age with night blindness with or without other signs of mild xerophthalmia detected in a house-to-house survey. Controls were randomly selected neighbors who lacked subjective and objective ophthalmologic evidence of vitamin A deficiency. Demographic…

Vitamin A treatment for night blindness in primary biliary cirrhosis.

Three patients with late stage primary biliary cirrhosis were found to have appreciable night blindness. Serum vitamin A concentrations were low in all three patients despite regular intramuscular supplementation in two. All patients responded dramatically to high dose oral supplementation, with full recovery of adaptation to dark and visual fields. Oral rather than intramuscular vitamin A supplementation seems appropriate in the prevention of ocular complications of vitamin A deficiency in biliary cirrhosis.

Microcephaly, microphthalmia, falciform retinal folds, and blindness. A new syndrome.

We have observed an apparently new, heritable syndrome consisting of severe microcephaly, microphthalmia, falciform retinal folds, and blindness. Two brothers were affected with these problems. The mother, while she has no ocular malformations, has severe microcephaly and mild mental retardation. The only other offspring of the parents, a boy, is normal. Laboratory evaluation of the affected sibs was uninformative. An environmental cause of this condition has been sought, but none has been identified. Possible modes of inheritance include autosomal dominant inheritance with variable expressivi…

Complex visual hallucinations in partial blindness due to eye disease.

Three patients experienced complex formed hallucinations during progressive visual failure from eye disease. The hallucinations began abruptly, were brightly coloured stereotyped figures, animals or objects, and appeared to be provoked by light. As blindness progressed the clarity, frequency and duration of the hallucinations faded. The patients had no abnormalities other than their eye disease, which in two cases was macula degeneration, and choroideraemia in the third.

Some causes of blindness seen at Noor Eye Institute, Afghanistan.

This is a survey of the causes of blindness recorded by three students of The City University during a six-week stay at NOOR Eye Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan. The nature of the sample used makes it unsuitable for direct comparison with surveys from other countries. Nevertheless, broad conclusions can be drawn. Severe eye disease is a considerable problem in Afghanistan, in common with other developing countries. The survey included all new patients seen in the outpatient clinic, blind to the extent of being unable to count fingers at more than three metres, in one eye or both. The sample of…

Night blindness, characteristic facies, and skeletal abnormalities in two brothers.

Two brothers are described with a similar physical appearance characterised by minor periorbital anomalies, malar flatness, a maxillary overbite, retrognathia, sloping shoulders, joint hyperextensibility, and minor radiological anomalies. In addition, they had a slowly progressing night blindness, myopia, and extinguished electroretinograms. The mother had mild expression of some of the physical anomalies and a decreased electroretinogram response to red light. We have been unable to find any report of similarly affected children. The possible modes of inheritance are discussed.

An epidemiological study of blindness in an Indian rural community.

A house-to-house survey of blindness in an Indian rural community covering a population of 20 134 in 12 villages revealed a prevalence rate of 35 blind and 144 partially blind persons per 10 000 population. Blindness was significantly associated with the age, sex, marital status, occupation, and socioeconomic status of the respondents. Caratact, glaucoma, smallpox and trachoma were the main causes of blindness. Preventive measures can reduce the toll of blindness in such a community.

[Unilateral blindness as a complication of carotid angiography (author's transl)].

In a patient with stenosis of the left internal carotid artery acute amaurosis of the left eye was observed after carotid arteriography. The macular branches of the central retinal artery and of the cilioretinal artery were obliterated by embolic material. Two further patients with carotid occlusion and stenosis, in whom spontaneous loss of vision occured, are presented. In such cases the diagnosis may be made with comparable accuracy by other methods, such as ophthalmodynamometry or angioscintigraphy, which entail risk to the patient.
