Sepsis is a severe clinical syndrome in which a system-wide inflammatory response follows initial attempts to eliminate pathogens. It is not novel that in sepsis the brain is one of the first organs affected which causes an increase in morbidity and mortality and its consequences may be exacerbated when associated with a diagnosis of chronic inflammation, such as in obesity. Thus, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the susceptibility to brain damage after sepsis in obese rats. During two months, Wistar rats, 60 days, 250-300g received hypercaloric nutrition to induce obesity. Sepsis w

The prevalence of cerebrovascular disease increases with age, placing the elderly at a greater lifetime risk for dementia. Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) encompasses a spectrum of cognitive deficits from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. VCI and its most severe form, vascular dementia (VaD), is becoming a major public health concern worldwide. As growing efforts are being taken to understand VCI and VaD in animal models and humans, the pathogenesis of the disease is being actively explored. It is postulated that chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is a major cause of VCI. CCH activa

Alcoholism is associated with brain damage and impaired cognitive functioning. The relative contributions of different etiological factors, such as alcohol, thiamine deficiency and age vulnerability, to the development of alcohol-related neuropathology and cognitive impairment are still poorly understood. One reason for this quandary is that both alcohol toxicity and thiamine deficiency produce brain damage and cognitive problems that can be modulated by age at exposure, aging following alcohol toxicity or thiamine deficiency, and aging during chronic alcohol exposure. Pre-clinical models of a

An animal model of chronic brain hypoperfusion has been developed by applying coiled clips to the bilateral carotid artery of Mongolian gerbils. The brain tissue damage was neuropathologically studied after 1, 4, 8, and 12 weeks of hypoperfusion. The hippocampus, basal ganglia, and cerebral cortex of the chronically hypoperfused gerbil showed lesions with various severity which are probably due to ischemic episodes. In the cerebral white matter, however, two types of lesions were observed; one similar to those in the gray matter, and the other observed only in the white matter after more than

Chronic inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) disrupts the gut-brain axis, thereby inducing abnormal immune responses in the brain that are increasingly recognized as a source of neurological comorbidities. In the present work, we investigated the structural integrity and electrophysiological function of hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) pyramidal neurons in a rat model of ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium administration. Moreover, given the known neuroprotective properties of the nutraceutical creatine, we aimed to determine whether its oral supplementation preve

Alcohol-related brain injury is characterized by cognitive deficits and brain atrophy with the prefrontal cortex particularly susceptible. White matter in the human brain is lipid rich and a major target of damage from chronic alcohol abuse; yet, there is sparse information on how these lipids are affected. Here, we used untargeted lipidomics as a discovery tool to describe these changes in the prefrontal, middle temporal, and visual cortices of human subjects with alcohol use disorder and controls. Significant changes to the lipidome, predominantly in the prefrontal and visual cortices, and d

Set during the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the "Clinical Focus Meeting" (CFM) aims to bridge the gap between innovative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientific research and daily patient care. This initiative is dedicated to maximizing the impact of MRI technology on healthcare outcomes for patients. At the 2023 Annual Meeting, clinicians and scientists from across the globe were invited to discuss neuroinflammation from various angles (entitled "Imaging the Fire in the Brain"). Topics ranged from fundamental mechanisms and biomar

The relationship between MR patterns of brain damage and type or timing of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia was studied. MR images of 104 children with evidence of bilateral posthypoxic-ischemic brain damage and neonatal records were reviewed. Three different MR patterns were found. Periventricular leukomalacia occurred in 73 children, in 82% after a history of subacute or chronic hypoxia-ischemia, in 71% after preterm birth. Predominant lesions of basal ganglia and thalamus occurred in 21 children, in 95% preceded by acute profound asphyxia, in 85% after term birth. Multicystic encephalopathy occur

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the deterrent factors for rehabilitation training (rehab) of chronic cerebral vascular disease (CVD) patients, and also to evaluate the influence of age on these factors. Sixty-five CVD impatients with sequelae treated at the Cerebral Vascular Center of Nanasawa Hospital were included in the study. Patients were classified into two groups using the Barthel index score: good effect group (n = 21) or no effect group (n = 22). The following factors were compared between the two groups in order to investigate which factor most affects the results of

Perinatal inflammation can lead to fetal/neonatal inflammatory syndrome, a risk factor for brain lesions, especially in the white matter. Perinatal inflammation is associated with increased incidence of cerebral palsy in humans and animal models and there is a strong relationship with increased incidence of autism and schizophrenia in humans. Perinatal inflammation causes acute microglial and astroglial activation, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, and disrupts oligodendrocyte maturation leading to hypomyelination. Inflammation also sensitizes the brain to additional perinatal insults, includin

Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury occurring during the perinatal period is still a major cause of mortality and morbidity. We assessed the impact of maternal hypertension, the most common medical disorder of pregnancy, on the anatomical and functional consequences of HI insult in the immature brain. Rat pups from spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive (Wistar Kyoto - WKY) dams were subjected to HI brain damage at post-natal day 7 (P7). Brain lesion and functional deficits were analyzed from 10 min to 35 days after HI, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), sensorimotor and cogniti

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that is characterized by demyelination and neuronal damage. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mice are used to model the disease progression of MS and mirror MS-like pathology. Previous researches have confirmed that inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome significantly alleviated the severity of EAE mice and the demyelination of spinal cord, but its effect on neuronal damage and oligodendrocyte loss in the brain remains unclear. In this study, female C57BL/6 mice were immunized with MOG35-55 and PTX to establish experimental autoimmune encep

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the relationship between the degree of histologic changes in the brain, heart, kidney, and liver in fetal lambs after severe asphyxia and to analyze the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of fetal multiple organ failure.
STUDY DESIGN: Eight chronically instrumented near-term fetal lambs were asphyxiated by partial umbilical cord occlusion for approximately 60 minutes until the fetal arterial pH reached <6.9 and the base excess reached <-20 mEq/L. An additional 6 fetuses were used as sham-asphyxiated controls. Fetal heart rates, blood pressure, fetal

Cerebral visual impairment is one of the main causes of childhood visual impairment in developed countries. These disorders are often linked with pre- or perinatal hypoxic brain injuries. The patterns of brain injuries depend on the severity and duration of hypoxia and the child's age. In premature children, periventricular leukomalacia affects the optic radiations and the subcortical visual brain. In full-term newborn babies, chronic hypoxia leads to the damage of the visual cortex and acute hypoxia damages the basal ganglia. They recover from cortical blindness in variable ways. Visual dysfu

Consciousness (Latin conscientia "moral conscience"), according to the English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) [103], is the awareness of all that occurs in the mind of a person, whereas the American philosopher John Searle (2000) defined it as "inner qualitative, subjective states and processes of awareness". In modern science it is defined as a continuous state of full awareness of the Self and one's relationship to the external and internal environment, describing the degree of wakefulness in which an organism recognizes stimuli. This widely discussed biological term for complex neuronal

This article reviews some physiological parameters that influence the location and degree of injury from hypoxia-ischemia. The ability of various imaging tests, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, to detect tissue changes after hypoxia-ischemia is discussed. Most importantly, we evaluate the extent of our knowledge regarding the correlations between imaging, pathophysiological processes, and clinical medicine.

In the neurosurgical intensive care unit 135 patients were studied by means of multi-modality evoked potentials. The majority part of them had low scores on the Glasgow Coma Scale and a higher lever of coma according to WFNS. This fact explains the high mortality (52 per cent). These patient data were compared with the changes of evoked responses (ER) in order to learn something about the value of ER in localisation of lesions, staging, and predicting the outcome of the patients. A classification of EP alterations is introduced. There was no correlation between alteration of evoked potentials

Hypoxic-ischaemic brain lesions may be detected as low density (LD) areas by means of computerized tomography (CT), but the clinical significance of such LD areas has been controversial. Since timing might be a critical factor, we studied the temporal evolution of LD areas in 9 asphyxiated term babies who had had two or more CT, and compared the changes to the neurodevelopmental outcome. Scans were classified according to the elapsed time after asphyxia as early (day 1-7, n = 6), intermediate (week 2-4, n = 7; week 4-7, n = 3) and late CT (3 months or more, n = 7). In early scans, no, or only

Multiple organ injury including the intestines, liver, and central nervous system is a prevalent consequence of chronic alcoholic intoxication (CAI). Compelling evidence from recent studies underscores a central role for the intestines and their microbiota in mediating interactions between the gut and the liver or the brain. In this article, the effects of polysaccharides from Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. leaves (EULP) on chronic alcoholic tissue injury along the gut-liver or gut-brain axis were studied. Results demonstrated that EULP alleviated gastric mucosal damage, endotoxemia, epithelial tight
