Microsatellite instability and mismatch repair protein expressions in lymphocyte-predominant breast cancer.

The frequency of microsatellite instability (MSI) is reportedly extremely low in breast cancer, despite widespread clinical expectations that many patients would be responsive to immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Considering that some triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) responded well to ICI in a clinical trial and that a high density of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is frequently observed in other cancers with high levels of microsatellite instability (MSI-H), we hypothesized that some TNBC with a high density of TILs would be MSI-H. Medullary carcinoma (MedCa) of the breast, a ra

Biennial screening mammography: How many women ask for more? Estimate of the interval mammogram rate in an organised population-based screening programme.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the interval mammogram rate, i.e. the undertaking of an additional mammography between scheduled screening rounds, and identify factors influencing this phenomenon. METHODS: Data from our screening programme for the year 2014, excluding prevalent rounds, were analysed. Information about the number of women who underwent  interval mammograms was obtained reviewing the questionnaires and searching the department database. Data on age, breast density, family history of breast cancer, number of screening rounds, previous recalls, general practitioner, and city of residence…

Asymmetric mammographic findings based on the fourth edition of BI-RADS: types, evaluation, and management.

Asymmetric breast findings are frequently encountered at screening and diagnostic mammography. However, there has been some confusion about the applicable terminology for describing asymmetric breast findings. The fourth edition of the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) has incorporated changes in the lexicon for asymmetric breast findings to address such problems and improve the clinical utility of reporting. The fourth edition has replaced "asymmetric breast tissue" with "global asymmetry," "density seen in only a single projection" with "asymmet

Association of body size measurements and mammographic density in Korean women: the Healthy Twin study.

BACKGROUND: Both greater body size and higher mammographic density seem to be associated with a risk of breast cancer. To understand a mechanism through which body size confers a higher risk of breast cancer, associations between mammographic measures and various measures of body size were examined. METHOD: Study subjects were 730 Korean women selected from the Healthy Twin study. Body size measurements were completed according to standard protocol. Mammographic density was measured from digital mammograms using a computer-assisted method from which the total area and the dense area of the br

Bone mineral density and mammographic density in Mexican women.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) is a putative marker for lifetime exposure to estrogen. Studies that have explored whether BMD is a determinant of mammographic density (MD) have observed inconsistent results. Therefore,we examined this potential association in a sample of women (n = 1,516) from the clinical sub-cohort in the Mexican teachers’ cohort (n = 115,315). METHODS: We used multivariable linear regression to assess the association between quartiles of BMD and percent MD, as well as total dense and non-dense area of the breast, stratified by menopausal status. We also examined th

[Methods of feeding and illness in infants in the first six months of life].

UNLABELLED: There is now a general agreement, that breast feeding prevents infantile gastrointestinal infections and non-gastrointestinal infections in all settings. In this study, we tried to pay attention to Kovar et al. who suggested that studies to detect the effects of breast feeding on health should be undertaken for other reasons and should include the collection of related information as part of the study. METHODS: Data collection. The population consisted of all infants born in the community of Krushevac in 1994. After at least 36 weeks of pregnancy their weight was 2500 g or more. T

A comprehensive evaluation of interaction between genetic variants and use of menopausal hormone therapy on mammographic density.

INTRODUCTION: Mammographic density is an established breast cancer risk factor with a strong genetic component and can be increased in women using menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). Here, we aimed to identify genetic variants that may modify the association between MHT use and mammographic density. METHODS: The study comprised 6,298 postmenopausal women from the Mayo Mammography Health Study and nine studies included in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. We selected for evaluation 1327 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showing the lowest P-values for interaction (P int) in a meta-a

A clinical model for identifying the short-term risk of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Most mammography screening programs are not individualized. To efficiently screen for breast cancer, the individual risk of the disease should be determined. We describe a model that could be used at most mammography screening units without adding substantial cost. METHODS: The study was based on the Karma cohort, which included 70,877 participants. Mammograms were collected up to 3 years following the baseline mammogram. A prediction protocol was developed using mammographic density, computer-aided detection of microcalcifications and masses, use of hormone replacement therapy (H

A randomized study of 2 risk assessment models for individualized breast cancer risk estimation.

BACKGROUND: Estimating breast cancer risk involves quantifying genetic and non-genetic factors. This supports health interventions and risk communication to ensure adherence to screening recommendations. This study evaluated the change in risk estimation when incorporating breast density and polygenic risk score (PRS) into the baseline cancer risk assessment and compared the efficacy of 2 risk-assessment delivery models. METHODS: This 2-step study included 663 healthy women with a family history of breast cancer in which no pathogenic variants were identified. First, breast density and PRS we…

Impact of the new density reporting laws: radiologist perceptions and actual behavior.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To assess radiologists' perceptions of how the new Breast Density Notification Act (BDNA) of Pennsylvania would affect their breast density reporting and their actual reporting patterns after implementation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under an institutional review board-approved protocol, we surveyed 21 radiologists about how they believe the new law affected their breast density reporting patterns and analyzed actual changes for 16 respondents before and after the law took effect. Three hundred consecutive reports were assessed for each radiologist before and after the …

Quantitative background parenchymal uptake on molecular breast imaging and breast cancer risk: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Background parenchymal uptake (BPU), which refers to the level of Tc-99m sestamibi uptake within normal fibroglandular tissue on molecular breast imaging (MBI), has been identified as a breast cancer risk factor, independent of mammographic density. Prior analyses have used subjective categories to describe BPU. We evaluate a new quantitative method for assessing BPU by testing its reproducibility, comparing quantitative results with previously established subjective BPU categories, and determining the association of quantitative BPU with breast cancer risk. METHODS: Two nonradiol

Evidence of the effect of adjunct ultrasound screening in women with mammography-negative dense breasts: interval breast cancers at 1 year follow-up.

Surveillance of interval cancers (IC) provides a measure of breast screening efficacy. Increased breast density is a predictor of breast cancer risk and of the risk of IC in screening. Improving screening sensitivity in women with dense breasts, through adjunct ultrasound (US), may potentially reduce IC; however this has not been proven. We report on first-year IC in a retrospective cohort of 8865 women who had 19,728 screening examinations (2001-2006): women with non-dense (D1-D2) breasts received mammography (M) screening, and women with dense (D3-D4) breasts also received ultrasound. Data l…

Impact of common artefacts on mass visibility in contrast-enhanced mammography: A virtual imaging trial.

BACKGROUND: Artefacts in contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) can compromise diagnostic image quality. These artefacts may obscure clinically relevant findings or mimic pathological features, potentially leading to misinterpretation. PURPOSE: A virtual imaging trial technique was used to quantify the impact of breast-in-breast and motion artefacts on lesion contrast and signal-difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR) in CEM. METHODS: Computational breast phantoms representing four breast density categories were generated, and 5 mm diameter non-spiculated masses were embedded centrally and peripherall…

Mammographic density in birth cohorts of Danish women: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the leading malignant disease among western women with incidence increasing over time. High mammographic density is a well-established risk factor for breast cancer. We explored trends in mammographic density across birth cohorts to gain further insight into possible time trends in women's mammographic density that might explain the historical increase in breast cancer incidence. METHODS: Data derived from two mammography screening programs in Denmark from 1991 to 2001, including on average 41,091 women from Copenhagen and 52,938 women from Funen aged 50-69. Mammo
