AIDS and the lung.

Respiratory symptoms are common in HIV-infected persons. The challenge facing clinicians is to determine whether these respiratory symptoms are due to an opportunistic infection or to a chronic process, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, or emphysema. This article reviewed the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of two important opportunistic infections, PCP and bacterial pneumonia. It also reviewed the current data on obstructive lung diseases as they relate to HIV.

Ciliary ultrastructure in two sisters with Kartagener's syndrome.

Kartagener's syndrome (KS) is a clinical variant of primary ciliary dyskinesia involving situs inversus associated with chronic airway infections. We studied two sisters; the elder one had dextrocardia and scoliosis, and the younger one had situs inversus of the lung, liver, and stomach as well as dextrocardia. Both patients had chronic sinusitis and chronic bronchitis with bronchiectasis. In both cases, the ciliary defect associated with this syndrome is the absence of inner dynein arms.

[The effect of antibiotics on the body of those working in their manufacture].

541 workers with long-term history of occupational contact with antibiotics and chemicals were examined by a dermatologist, ENT specialist, neuropathologist, surgeon, ophthalmologist. Many workers complained of occasional skin eruption, rhinitis, skin itching, sneezing, cough, Quincke's edema. Allergic examination revealed the presence of allergic symptoms (allergic dermatitis, itch, vasomotor rhinitis, chronic eczema, obstructive bronchitis, bronchial asthma, Quincke's edema, acute and chronic conjunctivitis) in 98 examinees. Somatic affections are represented by hypertension, chronic hepatit

Eosinophilic bronchitis-like lesion as the cause of death in a Macaca mulatta: a first case report.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic bronchitis is a recently described, relatively benign condition in humans that is characterized by a corticosteroid-responsive chronic cough and sputum eosinophilia without the abnormalities of airway function seen in asthma. The exact cause of this condition is currently unknown, however has been associated with various occupational exposures in humans. It has also been reported to progress to irreversible airway obstruction. This disease has been reported in dogs and horses, but not in non-human primates. METHODS: Gross examination of an otherwise healthy 13-year-ol

[Pathomorphology of chronic obstructive lung disease in the horse].

The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in horses is primarily based on a chronic bronchitis/bronchiolitis with constriction of the tubes in the lower respiratory tract. The outward appearance of the lung is characterized by a diffuse or marginal alveolar emphysema. The big bronchial tubes are usually not altered. Small bronchi and bronchioli can often be seen through the pulmonal pleura. On the sectional area they are visible as opaque grey-red nodules with a central lumen detectable under a magnifying glass. The histopathological picture of alterations in the bronchial tree can vary

Inflammatory mechanisms and treatment of obstructive airway diseases with neutrophilic bronchitis.

Obstructive airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are major global health issues. Although considered as distinct diseases, airway inflammation is a key underlying pathophysiological process in asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis. Persistent neutrophilic airway inflammation (neutrophilic bronchitis) occurs with innate immune activation and is a feature of each of these airway diseases. Little is known about the mechanisms leading to neutrophilic bronchitis and few treatments are effective in reducing neutrophil accumulation in the airways. There is a simil

Obstructive lung disease among the urban homeless.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is a growing problem in the United States that may significantly impair physical health. The homeless have a high prevalence of cigarette smoking, poor nutrition, and adverse environmental exposures, which could contribute to obstructive lung disease (OLD). Despite this risk, the prevalence of OLD among the homeless remains unknown. We aimed to systematically assess the prevalence of OLD among the urban homeless. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of the prevalence of OLD among homeless individuals in San Francisco. By random

High rate of pulmonary exacerbations and neutrophilic airway inflammation in children with repaired esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula.

BACKGROUND: Children with repaired esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) frequently have chronic respiratory morbidity, but airway inflammation is poorly defined. We described bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cell patterns in symptomatic EA/TEF and compared them with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB), and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: BAL profiles from symptomatic EA/TEF patients (n = 44) were analyzed against PCD (n = 10), PBB (n = 21), and HC (n = 16). Endoscopic bronchitis severity was assessed using the BScore. Increased total plasma TGF-β1 levels and deregulated IgA-IgM axis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by obstruction of the small airways and includes "flare-ups", which are sudden and significant worsening of symptoms, sometimes caused by infections. METHODS: Patients with COPD (n = 38) and acute bronchitis (AB, n=35) were grouped based on age and examined at two time points: during flare-ups/infections and at day 30. We measured various biomarkers, including total plasma TGF-β1 levels, total IgA

Adenomatous hyperplasia induced by chronic cherry pit retention mimicking an endobronchial tumor-case series and systematic review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial foreign body aspiration is not common in adults, but it is a life-threatening event. Recurrent pneumonias by chronic retention of foreign body often lead to initial medical presentation of the patient. However, lymphoplasmacellular bronchitis with adenomatous hyperplasia and squamous epithelium metaplasia with complete or partial blockage of lobar bronchus mimicking lung tumor is rare in literature, and this particular condition is often misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: we report our experience in the diagnostic and management of two elderly patients with recurrent
