The regional distribution of cadmium in the brains of orally exposed adult rats.

Cadmium (Cd) levels were measured in 13 dissected brain regions of adult male rats from 3 treatment groups. Rats (approximately 200 g each) were each fed 10 g/day of diets containing either 20 or 100 micrograms/g (ppm) Cd or control diet to which no Cd was added but contained approximately 0.35 ppm Cd. After 67 days of treatment, the brain of each rat was removed and each was dissected into 13 anatomical regions including olfactory bulbs, frontal cortex, rest of cortex, corpus callosum, hippocampus, amygdalae, corpus striatum, colliculum, tegmentum, thalamus, hypothalamus, pons-medulla, and ce…

Dietary exposure to cadmium and health effects: impact of environmental changes.

Cadmium exposure, metabolism, and effects are described especially in relation to dietary intakes. Data on dietary intakes in several countries have been complied from studies using the duplicate diet method or fecal analysis. These two methods seem to give more accurate data than estimates based on cadmium concentrations in food classes and food consumption (composite method). The present data on absorption and retention of ingested cadmium indicate that normally less than 5% is ingested, but absorption may increase in women who have iron deficiency. Earlier estimates of the critical concentr…

A study on cadmium-induced nephropathy in rats pretreated with puromycin aminonucleoside.

Nephrotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) was investigated using puromycin aminonucleoside (AN)-pretreated rats. AN pretreatment was performed by iv injection of 100 mg AN/kg body wt 11 days before the initial Cd injection. Since massive proteinuria and focal glomerular deposits were recognized, glomerular permeability is considered to be increased in AN-pretreated rats. AN-pretreated and intact rats were injected sc with 3 mg Cd/kg body wt, 4 times a week. In non-pretreated rats, slight tubular vacuolation was seen after 1-week Cd exposure and severe vacuolation and coagulative necrosis of the tubules w…

Cadmium: its effects on ovulation, egg transport and pregnancy in the rabbit.

The subcutaneous administration of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) 24 h before hCG-induced ovulation in rabbits sacrificed 14 h after induction of ovulation leads to a dose-dependent decrease in the number of oviductal eggs and the number of eggs shed. While a dose of 1.25 mg/kg CdCl2 imposed no effect, only 50-67% of the dogs treated with 2.5 or 5 mg/kg CdCl2 ovulated and of those ovulated eggs 35.6 and 45%, respectively, were found in the oviducts. At a dose of 7.5 mg/kg CdCl2, a higher proportion (57.1%) of the does failed to ovulate and only 16% of the eggs were recovered from the oviducts. Ligat…

Calibration of a 238Pu,Be facility for partial-body measurements of organ cadmium.

An improved instrument is described for the measurement of liver and kidney cadmium by in vivo neutron activation analysis in both occupationally and environmentally exposed persons. Detailed calibrations of the instrument used in a study of 83 male workers at a cadmium production plant are give. The importance of accurate organ localisation by ultrasound is stressed, without which errors of 40 and 25% in individual and group kidney measurements, respectively, can occur. The detection limit (2 SD of the background) is 2.2 mg cadmium in the kidney and 1.5 micrograms g-1 (wet weight) in the live…

Susceptibility of mice to bacterial infections after chronic exposure to cadmium.

Susceptibility to bacterial infections after chronic exposure to cadmium was studied in mice. Cadmium chloride was injected intraperitoneally three times a week for 4 weeks. After this treatment, mice displayed splenomegalia, hyperplasia of the B-dependent areas of spleen. Virulence of bacteria considered as usually having extracellular sites of multiplication (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), or intracellular (Listeria monocytogenes), was determined. Only L. monocytogenes showed an increased virulence in cadmium-treated mice.

Acute effects of cadmium on the pregnant rat and embryo-fetal development.

In rats, of the Wistar-Porton strain, a single intravenous injection of 1.25 mg Cd2+ between days 9 and 15 of gestation results in a high incidence (80% of hydrocephalus, together with other malformations in the fetuses, examined on day 20. This dose is critical, since 1.1 mg Cd2+/kg is not teratogenic, while 1.35 mg Cd2+/kg kills all the embryos. Intravenous injection of Cd2+ to the pregnant rat on day 12 causes a dose-dependent inhibition of placental Zn2+ transport. At the teratogenic dose, Zn2+ transport is inhibited by about 75% at 4 hr. Thereafter, inhibition decreases with time but is s

Cadmium, lead and zinc accumulation in soils near a smelter complex.

Concentrations of nitric acid extractable Cd, Pb and Zn in surface soils, predominated by partially decomposed litter, from 15 sites within 9.7 km of the lead-zinc smelter complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada, attained 36.1, 12123, and 1394 ppm but averaged 17.8, 2607, and 571 ppm, respectively. Although underlying mineral soils contained smaller concentrations of all three metals, the relative immobility of Pb and mobility of Zn were observed. A close association between Cd and Zn concentrations was reflected by significant correlations but variation of Pb concentration in surface soils

Exogenous jasmonic acid and salicylic acid enhance selenium uptake and mitigate cadmium accumulation in pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) grown in selenium-rich, high-cadmium soil.

Plant hormones are known to regulate the uptake and distribution of mineral elements, including heavy metals, in crops. This study evaluated the effects of exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA), applied individually or in combination, on selenium (Se) enrichment and cadmium (Cd) mitigation in pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) cultivated in Se-rich and high-Cd soils. Hormone treatments significantly increased shoot Se content by 33.7%-62.3% compared to the control, with the highest level Se accumulation observed under combined application of 50 μmol·L-1 JA and 50 μmol·L-1 SA. Cd a…

Species and life-stage specific differences in cadmium accumulation and cadmium induced oxidative stress, metallothionein and heat shock protein responses in white sturgeon and rainbow trout.

Understanding the mechanistic basis of differences in the sensitivity of fishes to metals is important for developing informed ecological risk assessment approaches for metals. Whole body metal accumulation, metallothionein induction, oxidative stress and associated antioxidant response, as well as heat shock proteins (mainly HSP70) are known to play important roles in determining the toxicity of metals in fish. Hence, in this study we have cross-evaluated these parameters as a function of Cd exposure across different life-stages of two evolutionarily distinct fish species, namely rainbow (Onc

Cadmium (II) imprinted 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane coated stir bar for selective extraction of trace cadmium from environmental water samples followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detection.

Cd(II) imprinted 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS)-silica coated stir bar was prepared by sol-gel technique combining with a double-imprinting concept for the first time and was employed for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) of trace Cd(II) from water samples followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection. A tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) coating was first in situ created on the glass bar surface. Afterward, a sol solution containing MPTS as the functional precursor, ethanol as the solvent and both Cd(II) and surfactant micelles (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide,

Cadmium stress induces mitochondrial damage and transgenerational inheritance in Drosophila melanogaster.

Cadmium (Cd) is a common toxic heavy metal in the environment, which can exert extensive toxic effects on the reproduction, development, and aging of organisms. This study employed Drosophila melanogaster (Canton-S strain) to investigate the developmental toxicity and transgenerational genetic effects of Cd, a prevalent environmental toxic heavy metal. The study showed that Cd exposure caused a significant reduction in F0 citrate synthase activity, an effect that persisted for two generations specifically in female treatment groups. Cd exposure was associated with transcriptional and enzymatic…

Multi-Targeted Mechanisms of Phytochemicals in Mitigating Cadmium-Induced Breast Cancer.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental toxicant originating from both natural processes and human activities. Cd has been strongly associated with multiple diseases, including breast cancer (BC). Background/Objective: Environmental Cd exposure represents a significant contributor to BC onset and progression. Cd-induced breast carcinogenesis is driven by a constellation of molecular events, including DNA damage, oxidative stress (OS), and the dysregulation of key signaling pathways. These include the ERK/JNK/p38 MAPK cascade, the PI3K/AKT/mTOR axis, NF κB activation, and Wnt signaling, all of which c…
