Altered Sphingolipid Balance in Capillary Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibit amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits at the brain vasculature, a process referred to as cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). In over 51% of AD cases, Aβ also accumulates in cortical capillaries, which is termed capillary CAA (capCAA). It has been postulated that the presence of capCAA in AD is a specific subtype of AD, although underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Sphingolipids (SLs) are implicated in neurodegenerative disorders, including AD. However, to date it remains unknown whether alterations in the SL pathway are…

Capillary leak syndrome in neuromyelitis optica treated with rituximab.

61-year-old woman with Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) diagnosis treated with rituximab was referred to our hospital with severe hypovolemic shock and anasarca. The laboratory findings showed marked hemoconcentration and a decrease in total serum protein. She developed a multiple organ failure and died three hours later. We diagnosed the patient as having capillary leak syndrome (CLS). CLS is a very rare condition caused by unexplained episodic capillary hyperpermeability, which can be idiopathic or secondary to some conditions like infection, malignant disease and some drugs like monoclonal antibo

Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a Persian cat.

Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH) and pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) are rare causes of primary pulmonary hypertension in h … nary alveolar septa and around respiratory bronchioles, with nodular aggregates of densely arranged capillaries that replaced pulmonary alveolar spaces. Rare occlusive venous remodeling was identified in Verhoeff-van Gieson-stained sections. The gross and microscopic changes were consistent with PCH with rare features of PVOD. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was …

Capillary Rise: Validity of the Dynamic Contact Angle Models.

The classical Lucas-Washburn-Rideal (LWR) equation, using the equilibrium contact angle, predicts a faster capillary rise process than experiments in many cases. The major contributor to the faster prediction is believed to be the velocity dependent dynamic contact angle. In this work, we investigated the dynamic contact angle models for their ability to correct the dynamic contact angle effect in the capillary rise process. We conducted capillary rise experiments of various wetting liquids in borosilicate glass capillaries and compared the model predictions with our experimental data. The res…

Relation of peritubular capillary features to class of lupus nephritis.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have linked peritubular capillary (PTC) loss with progression of chronic kidney disease. Minimal informatio … because some cases with worse classes of LN showed increased PTC density due to abnormally dilated capillaries associated with acute inflammation and angiogenesis. %PTC was increased in those with hematuria (5.8±5.2 vs. 3.6±3.4 %, red blood cells 3-10 vs. < 3 cells/high power field, p < 0.05) and was reduced in those with a moderately declined renal function …

Pathogenetics of alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins (ACDMPV) is a lethal lung developmental disorder caused by heterozygous point mutations or genomic deletion copy-number variants (CNVs) of FOXF1 or its upstream enhancer involving fetal lung-expressed long noncoding RNA genes LINC01081 and LINC01082. Using custom-designed array comparative genomic hybridization, Sanger sequencing, whole exome sequencing (WES), and bioinformatic analyses, we studied 22 new unrelated families (20 postnatal and two prenatal) with clinically diagnosed ACDMPV. We describe novel deletion CNVs at the F

Comparison of Transcutaneous and Capillary Measurement of PCO2 in Hypercapnic Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of PCO2 is vital in determining effective alveolar ventilation. However, obtaining capillary PCO2 by a skin prick of the earlobe is painful, and nocturnal measurements disturb sleep. End-expiratory measurement of PCO2 is also well established, but there is a low precision in predicting arterial or capillary CO2. The purpose of the study was to evaluate nocturnal measurement of noninvasive, transcutaneous PCO2 (PtcCO2 ) measurement in hypercapnic subjects. METHODS: In this prospective study, 31 subjects with chronic hypercapnic failure--in a stable phase of the underlyi

Quantification of sugars in breakfast cereals using capillary electrophoresis.

About 80% of the Australian population consumes breakfast cereal (BC) at least five days a week. With high prevalence rates of obesity and other diet-related diseases, improved methods for monitoring sugar levels in breakfast cereals would be useful in nutrition research. The heterogeneity of the complex matrix of BCs can make carbohydrate analysis challenging or necessitate tedious sample preparation leading to potential sugar loss or starch degradation into sugars. A recently established, simple and robust free solution capillary electrophoresis (CE) method was used in a new application to 1

A stability indicating capillary electrophoresis method for analysis of buserelin.

A simple and rapid stability indicating method based on capillary zone electrophoresis has been developed and validated for the analysis of buserelin (BUS). The best separations were achieved by using a bare fused silica capillary (75 μm i.d.; 65.5 cm total, 57.0 cm effective length), phosphate buffer (pH = 3.00; 26.4 mM), at 35 °C. The sample was hydrodynamically injected at 50 mbar for 5 seconds; the applied voltage was 30 kV and detection was carried out by UV-absorbance at 200 nm. Method validation resulted in the following figures of merit : the method was linear in the concentration rang

Imaging of intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma of azygos vein.

Intraluminal masses of the azygos vein are of rare occurrence. The differential diagnosis includes bland thrombus, tumor thrombus, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, and leiomyosarcoma. To this list, the authors add an uncommon case of intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma, also known as intravenous pyogenic granuloma, of the azygos vein, inducing a recurrent large right pleural effusion. CT, MR, and PET/CT features of this lesion are presented.

Pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis: a rare cause of pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis (PCH) is a rare disorder of unknown aetiology, characterised by proliferating capillaries that invade the pulmonary interstitium, alveolar septae and the pulmonary vasculature. It is often mis-diagnosed as primary pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary veno-occlusive disease. Pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis is a locally aggressive benign vascular neoplasm of the lung. We report the case of a 19-year-old female who was referred to us in the early post-partum period with severe pulmonary artery hypertension, which was diagnosed as PCH by open lung biopsy.

Endothelial dysfunction and lung capillary injury in cardiovascular diseases.

Cardiac dysfunction of both systolic and diastolic origins leads to increased left atrial pressure, lung capillary injury and increased resistance to gas transfer. Acutely, pressure-induced trauma disrupts the endothelial and alveolar anatomical configuration and definitively causes an impairment of cellular pathways involved in fluid-flux regulation and gas exchange efficiency, a process well identified as stress failure of the alveolar-capillary membrane. In chronic heart failure (HF), additional stimuli other than pressure may trigger the true remodeling process of capillaries and small art…

Alveolar-capillary adaptation to chronic hypoxia in the fatty lung.

AIM: Obese diabetic (ZDF fa/fa) rats with genetic leptin resistance suffer chronic lipotoxicity associated with age-related lung restriction and abnormal alveolar ultrastructure. We hypothesized that these abnormalities impair adaptation to ambient hypoxia. METHODS: Male fa/fa and lean (+/+) ZDF rats (4-months old) were exposed to 21 or 13% O2 for 3 weeks. Lung function was measured under anaesthesia. Lung tissue was assayed for DNA damage and ultrastructure measured by morphometry. RESULTS: In normoxia, lung volume, compliance and diffusing capacity were lower, while blood flow was higher i

Reversible pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension due to dasatinib.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension and secondary pleural effusion have been reported in association with long-term therapy with the multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor dasatinib, approved for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. Here, we present the case of a 50-year-old man, diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in August 2003, who developed pulmonary arterial hypertension after > 4 years of treatment with dasatinib. The complete remission of pulmonary arterial hypertension following dasatinib discontinuation suggests an etiological role of the drug in its development, although the administr
