Itraconazole for the treatment of cryptococcosis in cats.

Itraconazole was used in 35 cats with cryptococcosis. Treatment response was determined by comparing clinical signs before, during, and after treatment. It could not be evaluated in 7 cats because they died during treatment from causes unrelated to cryptococcosis. Of the remaining 28 cats, treatment response was classified as success in 16 cats (57%), as improvement in 8 cats (29%), and as a failure in 4 (14%). The failures were due to death or euthanasia from drug toxicity (1 cat), progressive fungal disease (2 cats), and relapse 1 year after treatment (1 cat). The cats that improved did not …

Acute gastritis associated with spiral organisms from cats.

Numerous studies implicated Helicobacter pylori as one causative agent producing gastritis and dyspepsia. Recent reports focus on another ba … s. The spiral forms were present in large quantities in the gastric mucosa of experimental animals (cats) handled by the patient in his research. Electron microscopy confirmed that the organisms from the cat and patient were morphologically identical. The patient was successfully treated with bismuth subsalicylate. His symptoms resolved and the organis …

Diet and periodontal disease in dogs and cats.

A review of relevant literature was undertaken because of concerns about a possible relationship between pet foods, development of periodont … se, and that harder foods requiring vigorous prehension and mastication are preferable for dogs and cats. While it is plausible that periodontal disease could cause diseases in other organs and tissues, the evidence for this is limited at present. Further research is needed to better define the relationship between diet types and oral health. In the me …

Chylous ascites in cats: nine cases (1978-1993).

Medical records of 9 cats with chylous ascites that underwent exploratory celiotomy were reviewed. In 7 cats, chylous ascites was associated with intra-abdominal neoplasia: 4 cats had an unresectable tumor (hemangiosarcoma, 3 cats; paraganglioma, 1 cat) within the mesenteric root; 2 had malignant lymphoma of the small intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes; and 1 had lymphangiosarcoma of the abdominal wall. In 2 cats, chylous ascites was associated with nonneoplastic diseases: 1 cat had severe biliary cirrhosis and an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt; the other had steatitis caused by vitamin E …

IgE responses in cats infected with Brugia pahangi.

Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis tests were used to examine the IgE responses of cats repeatedly infected with the filarial nematode Brugia pahangi. Specific IgE was usually detected only in those cats that killed their adult worms and rarely in those cats in which adult worms survived for long periods. We suggest that this specific IgE is actively involved in killing adult worms in the lymphatics.

Ventilatory effects of acetazolamide in cats during hypoxemia.

In normoxemic cats, acetazolamide (ACTZ) has been shown to cause a large rise in ventilation (VE) but a decrease in peripheral chemoreceptor activity. The relative contribution of the peripheral chemoreceptors to ventilation is higher during hypoxemia than during normoxemia. Therefore, what are the effects of ACTZ during steady-state hypoxemia? The aims of this study in anesthetized cats were 1) to study the effect of ACTZ (50 mg/kg iv) on mean hypoxemic [arterial PO2 (PaO2) approximately 6 kPa] ventilation and 2) to study the effect of ACTZ on the isocapnic hypoxic ventilatory response. In th…

Mycological findings in feline immunodeficiency virus-infected cats.

Thirty-five FIV-seropositive cats and 55 FIV-seronegative matched cats were examined for yeasts (oropharyngeal swabs) and dermatophytes (hair brushings). The frequency of isolation of Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans was significantly higher in the former group. The only dermatophyte isolated was Microsporum canis. Its prevalence was three times higher among FIV-infected cats than among control animals.

Dystrophin deficiency causes lethal muscle hypertrophy in cats.

Two 5-month-old male Domestic Shorthair littermates showed general skeletal muscle hypertrophy, multifocal submucosal lingual calcification with lingual enlargement, and excessive salivation. Both cats had a reduced level of activity, walked with a stiff gait, and tended to "bunny hop" when they ran. These clinical features were similar to those of previously reported dystrophin-deficient cats. Using multiple dystrophin antibodies, we found that the cats described in this report also showed marked dystrophin deficiency. The histopathology was remarkable for hypertrophy and splitting of fibers,…

Orbital neoplasms in cats: 21 cases (1974-1990).

Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common neoplasm found in a review of case records of 21 cats with histopathologically confirmed orbital neoplasms. Other neoplasms found were lymphosarcoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, malignant melanoma, adenocarcinoma, fibrosarcoma, chondroma, and hemangiosarcoma. Three (14%) neoplasms were primary, 15 (71%) were secondary, invading the orbit from adjacent tissues, and 3 (14%) were a manifestation of multicentric disease. The most common clinical sign was exophthalmia, followed by chronic epiphora, enophthalmia, and strabismus. Mean survival time after di…

[Pasteurella multocida infections: bites by dogs or cats?].

Annually 50,000 to 100,000 animal bites are seen by physicians in the Netherlands. Infections of these bite wounds frequently occur. Pasteurella multocida is one of the main causes of these infections and many serious complications may occur. We present 3 patients with disturbances in wound healing after animal bites or scratches due to infection with P. multocida. In view of the high infection ratio after cat bites we advise giving amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (Augmentin) for 5 days as prophylaxis. According to the literature prophylaxis for dog bites is not necessary. However, fatal complicat

Primary hyperparathyroidism in cats: seven cases (1984-1989).

The medical records of 7 hypercalcemic cats with primary hyperparathyroidism were evaluated. Mean age was 12.9 years, with ages ranging from 8 to 15 years; 5 were female; 5 were Siamese, and 2 were of mixed breed. The most common clinical signs detected by owners were anorexia and lethargy. A cervical mass was palpable in 4 cats. Serum calcium concentrations were 11.1 to 22.8 mg/dl, with a mean of 15.8 mg/dl calculated from each cat's highest preoperative value. The serum phosphorus concentration was low in 2 cats, within reference limits in 4, and slightly high in 1 cat. The BUN concentration…

Early toxicity of recombinant interleukin-2 in cats.

Studies were conducted in cats to determine whether this species could serve as an animal model for the therapeutic toxicity of recombinant interleukin-2 in humans, and to establish the role of the area postrema in the causation of recombinant interleukin-2-induced vomiting. Injections of recombinant interleukin-2 (3.6 x 10(6) IU/kg, i.m.), given once every 24 hr for one to three days, evoked repeated vomiting in 4 out of 6 area postrema intact cats and in 3 out of 3 area postrema-ablated cats. These results suggest that the area postrema is not essential for the emetic action of recombinant i…

Effects of cocaine on pial arterioles in cats.

We used the closed cranial window technique to observe the responses of pial arterioles to topical application of cocaine in 29 anesthetized cats. Alterations in arteriolar diameter were dependent on the concentration of cocaine applied. Cocaine dissolved in artificial cerebrospinal fluid at concentrations of 10(-8) or 10(-7) M was without effect. Concentrations of 10(-6) and 10(-5) M produced dilation (4.9 +/- 1.5% [mean +/- SEM] and 5.9 +/- 2.0%, respectively) in large arterioles (greater than 100 microns) but no significant change in the diameter of small arterioles (less than 100 microns).…

Ultrastructural alterations in caudate nucleus in aged cats.

These studies provide information on the changes in the ultrastructure in the caudate nucleus of aged cats. The major finding was that there was a decrease in the density of synapses in caudate neuropil. This decrease occurred in animals after 3 years of age and remained relatively constant in older animals. In conjunction with this change a population of unusually long synapses also occurred. These larger synaptic appositions were associated with enlarged spine heads. The caudate also showed a number of qualitative ultrastructural alterations. Many neurons contained accumulations of lipofusci…

Disseminated histoplasmosis in cats: 12 cases (1981-1986).

Anemia, weight loss, lethargy, fever, anorexia, and interstitial lung disease were the predominant clinical findings in 12 cats with disseminated histoplasmosis. Some cats were examined because of dysfunction or lesions of bone, eyes, or skin. In most cases, the clinical signs were observed by the owner for 4 weeks or less before seeking veterinary care. Young cats were most commonly affected, with 7 of the 12 cats less than or equal to 1 year old. Identification of Histoplasma organisms in bone marrow aspirates was used to confirm the diagnosis of histoplasmosis in 11 of the 12 cats. Histopla…

Neutropenia in cats with the Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

Thirteen cats with Chediak-Higashi syndrome and 22 control cats from the same colony, were evaluated for neutropenia. The absolute neutrophil counts of the Chediak-Higashi syndrome cats were significantly less (P less than 0.05) than those of the control cats. It is concluded that Chediak-Higashi syndrome cats, like Chediak-Higashi syndrome humans, have a neutropenia associated with the other manifestations of the syndrome. Lysozyme activity which was undetectable in the serum of both Chediak-Higashi syndrome and control cats was not of use for determining if the neutropenia was the result of …

California serogroup and Powassan virus infection of cats.

One hundred and seventy five sera from cats in Ontario, Canada, were tested for hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies to three arboviruses; namely, Powassan (POW) of the Flavivirus serogroup, and Snowshoe hare (SSH) and Jamestown Canyon (JC) viruses of the California (CAL) serogroup. All sera were negative for antibodies to POW virus. Twelve cats possessed CAL serogroup antibodies including 3 with antibodies to SSH alone, 6 with antibodies to JC alone, and 3 with antibodies to both SSH and JC antigens. POW virus was inoculated into seven cats, one intracerebrally and six intravenously. N…

Tapetal degeneration in cats with Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

The Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a genetic disorder of man, cats, and four other animal species. Enlarged cytoplasmic granules, including lysosomes and melanosomes, characterize the syndrome. Cats affected with CHS lack funduscopically visible tapeta. In normal cats, the tapetum is the light reflecting cellular layer located in the choroid. The tapetal cells contain bundles of parallel cytoplasmic rods. In this study, eyes from CHS and control cats were examined by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The CHS kittens up to 14 days of age had tapeta which appeared similar…
