Potential of connected devices to optimize cattle reproduction.

Estrus and calving are two major events of reproduction that benefit from connected devices because of their crucial importance in herd economics and the amount of time required for their detection. The objectives of this review are to: 1) provide an update on performances reached by sensor systems to detect estrus and calving time; 2) discuss current economic issues related to connected devices for the management of cattle reproduction; 3) propose perspectives for these devices. The main physiological parameters monitored separately or in combination by connected devices are the cow activity,…

Retrospective study on Cystic Echinococcosis in cattle of Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most widespread zoonosis of veterinary and medical importance still constituting a sanitary, economic and socio-cultural problem in Italy. METHODOLOGY: The aim of this study was to update epidemiological data on cattle CE in Italy. Data on CE positivity of 5,336 cattle were acquired from abattoir registers between January 2009 and July 2010. Morphobiological characterization of hydatids was performed by direct examination of liver and lungs of 1,664 animals butchered in the same slaughterhouses in 2010. Strain typing of parasites was carr…

Pathology of Naturally Occurring Bacillary Hemoglobinuria in Cattle.

Clostridium haemolyticum causes bacillary hemoglobinuria (BH), an infectious and usually fatal disease that occurs mostly in cattle, which is clinically characterized by jaundice, hemoglobinuria, and anemia. The trematode Fasciola hepatica has been commonly reported as the main predisposing factor that triggers this condition. The authors evaluated 20 naturally occurring cases of bovine BH to characterize the pathology and pathogenesis of the disease. Grossly, the most consistent finding was a large, frequently single focus of necrosis surrounded by a red to purple halo, observed most frequent…

Pathogen Exposure in Cattle at the Livestock-Wildlife Interface.

Land use is an important driver of variation in human infectious disease risk, but less is known about how land use affects disease risk in livestock. To understand how land use is associated with disease risk in livestock, we examined patterns of pathogen exposure in cattle across two livestock ranching systems in rural Kenya: private ranches with low- to medium-intensity cattle production and high wildlife densities, and group ranches with high-intensity cattle production and low wildlife densities. We surveyed cattle from six ranches for three pathogens: Brucella spp., bovine viral diarrhea…

Retrospective study on cattle and poultry diseases in Uganda.

Cattle and poultry enterprises are among the major contributors to food security and socioeconomic empowerment of households in Uganda. However, various diseases constrain their productivity. A two-year retrospective study between April 2012 and March 2014 was conducted using records for cattle and poultry diseases diagnosed at the Central Diagnostic Laboratory (CDL) to determine prevalent diseases in Uganda. The laboratory received 836 samples from poultry (36.3%) and cattle (63.7%). Of the 836 samples, 47.5% had a definitive diagnosis of disease causation. Most of the cattle and poultry dise…

First report of Blastocystis infections in cattle in China.

Blastocystis is one of the most common intestinal protists of humans and can also infect a variety of other mammals and birds. Blastocystis infections and subtype distribution in cattle have been documented, while nothing is known about those in China. Herein, a total of 526 dairy cattle from northeast China were sampled and investigated for the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Blastocystis and the potential role of bovine animals in zoonotic transmission of Blastocystis. The parasite was identified in 54 (10.3%) fecal specimens by nested PCR and DNA sequencing of the small subunit ri…

Toxoplasma gondii detection in cattle: A slaughterhouse survey.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Ingestion of raw or undercooked meat containing viable cysts has been suggested to be a major source of T. gondii infection in humans. Suboptimal performance of serological assays in cattle has traditionally precluded accurate quantification of the extent to which cattle populations are infected and their meat harbour tissue cysts. In the absence of accurate estimates of the level of infection in the animal population, assessments of likely human exposure through the consumption of cattle meat remain highly…

Synchronization and Artificial Insemination Strategies in Beef Cattle.

Utilization of estrus or ovulation synchronization and fixed-timed artificial insemination (TAI) has facilitated the widespread utilization of artificial insemination (AI) and can greatly impact the economic viability of cow-calf systems by enhancing weaning weights. Implementation of TAI programs by beef producers results in limited frequency of handling cattle and elimination of the need to detect estrus. Continued use of intensive reproductive management tools such as estrus synchronization and AI will result positive changes to calving distribution, pregnancy rates, and subsequent calf val…

Pathogenesis and Transmission of Classical and Atypical BSE in Cattle.

Many mammalian species can be affected by prion diseases, also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). "Classical" bovine spongiform encephalopathy (C-BSE) was the first prion disease recognized in cattle and it is the only known zoonotic prion disease, having caused variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans. Based on the biochemical signatures of disease-associated prion protein (PrPSc), two distinct forms of atypical bovine spongiform encephalopathies (H-BSE and L-BSE) have been distinguished from C-BSE since 2004. To date there is no comprehensive information abo…

Allergen Levels in the Hair of Different Cattle Breeds.

BACKGROUND: Cattle are well-known sources of respiratory allergens in agricultural environments. Breed-specific differences in Bos d 2 (a major bovine allergen) levels in cattle hair have been previously suggested but not fully characterized. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to determine whether hair from common cattle breeds differs in protein and allergen content. METHODS: In total, 80 hair samples from 16 different cattle breeds were analyzed. The protein concentration was determined using the Bradford assay. The allergen content was measured using a sandwich ELISA based on poly…

Genetic analysis of prolactin gene in Pakistani cattle.

Prolactin (PRL) is a polypeptide hormone, secreted mainly by the anterior pituitary gland. It is involved in many endocrine activities. The key functions of PRL are related to reproduction and lactation in mammals. To ascertain the presence of polymorphisms in the bovine PRL gene (bPRL), the bPRL gene was sequenced. Five mutations were identified in exonic region and eleven in associated intronic regions in 100 cattle from four Pakistani cattle breeds. Haplotype of predicted amino acid changes represent a common alteration at codon 222 from R-Arginine into K-Lysine in all four breeds. Signific…

Presence of Ureaplasma diversum in the Australian cattle population.

In cattle, Ureaplasma diversum has been associated with decreased fertility, granular vulvovaginitis, endometritis, salpingitis and spontaneous abortion in cows and seminal vesiculitis, balanoposthitis and changes in bull sperm. The presence of U. diversum within the Australian cattle population has not been established. One of the aims of this study was to determine if U. diversum was present in Australian cattle, using culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), both of which are considered to be gold standards for bacterial identification. Of 100 samples collected from 66 male and 34 femal…

Investigating the impact of fasciolosis on cattle carcase performance.

Liver fluke is a manifestation of bovine fasciolosis and its presence is compulsorily investigated as part of routine official abattoir inspections. It is known that the presence of fasciolosis negatively influences beef production, interfering with weight gain and fertility. Recent reports suggest increased occurrence of this parasite worldwide. This paper aims to investigate the impact of fasciolosis on beef cattle performance by examining the association of liver fluke with carcase characteristics and its value. Cattle slaughtered between 2005 and 2010 (328, 137 cattle (of which 12.6% were …

Conceptus elongation in cattle: genes, models and questions.

In ruminants, more than 30% of the embryonic loss observed after artificial insemination has an early origin that is coincident with the marked elongation of the conceptus that occurs before implantation. During this developmental phase, physiological interactions are established between the conceptus and the uterus which are essential for the establishment of pregnancy and the elongation process. Our molecular knowledge of elongating conceptuses in cattle has long been focused on its analysis in view of its interactions with the uterus with the elongating stages being defined, like the uterus…

The pathology of acute Nolletia gariepina poisoning of cattle.

Toxicity in cattle by the shrub Nolletia gariepina was induced experimentally by intraruminal administration of 3 g/kg dried, milled plant material as a single dose. The animals had to be starved for 24 hours before dosing, as dosing on a full rumen did not induce any signs of toxicity during 5 days of observation and clinical pathology monitoring. Clinical signs were not specific and varied according to the duration (acute versus subacute) of the toxicological process. Clinical pathological parameters indicated renal and to a lesser extent hepatic damage, with raised serum concentrations of u…
