A Golgi analysis of the primate globus pallidus. III. Spatial organization of the striato-pallidal complex.

An atlas of transverse sections of the globus pallidus and striatum was established in macaque with reference to ventricular coordinates. Th … tending over the major part of the putamen; and the other, an associative territory, comprising the caudate nucleus and antero-medial and postero-inferior parts of the putamen. The striato-pallido-nigral bundle was studied using Golgi, Perls, and Fink-Heimer techniques. The bundle is described in four parts: prepallidal (subdivided into caudato-pallidal and putam …

Personalized striatal targets for deep brain stimulation in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric conditions currently treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS), such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are heterogeneous diseases with different symptomatic dimensions, indicating that fixed neuroanatomical DBS targets for all OCD cases may not be efficacious. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We tested whether the optimal DBS target for OCD is fixed for all patients or whether it is individualized and related to each patient's symptomatic content. Further, we explored if the optimal target can be predicted by combining functional neuroimaging and structural connectivity. M

Quantitative measurements of brain iron deposition in cirrhotic patients using susceptibility mapping.

BACKGROUND: Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) has been used to detect micro-bleeds and iron deposits in the brain. However, no reports have been published on the application of SWI in studying iron changes in the brain of cirrhotic patients. PURPOSE: To compare the susceptibility of different brain structures in cirrhotic patients with that in healthy controls and to evaluate susceptibility as a potential biomarker and correlate the measured susceptibility and cadaveric brain iron concentration for a variety of brain structures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-three cirrhotic patients (27 me

Caudate volume predicts neurocognitive performance in youth with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders result from heavy prenatal alcohol exposure and are characterized, in some cases, by central ne … ous research associating gestational alcohol exposure with structural and functional changes of the caudate nucleus. Our findings extend this previous work by demonstrating that volume reductions of the caudate have behavioral relevance for this population, in relation to cognitive control and verbal learning and recall abilities.

Basal ganglia connectivity and network asymmetry in Parkinson's disease: A resting-state fMRI study.

This study investigates the impact of basal ganglia network asymmetry on motor function in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), functional connectivity and network asymmetry were analyzed in 15 non-demented PD patients and 15 healthy controls. Sixteen basal ganglia substructures, including the caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus, were selected for a unified analysis of variance framework to evaluate inter-hemispheric connectivity differences. After spatial preprocessing, regions of interest were defined, and time-series data were extr

Gray matter volume showed dynamic alterations in methamphetamine users at 6 and 12months abstinence: A longitudinal voxel-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated brain gray matter reduction in methamphetamine (MA) users; however, little is known about lon … ted with GMV in the right superior frontal gyrus, the right superior temporal cortex, and the right caudate nucleus (significant at the whole brain level, p<0.001; FWE cluster-corrected p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The present study suggested that heavy MA users' GMV could show dynamic alterations in different brain regions at different time lengths of abstinence.

Analysis of Small Ischemic Lesions in the Examinees of a Brain Dock and Neurological Examination of Animals Subjected to Cortical or Basal Ganglia Photothrombotic Infarction.

We analyzed cases of small brain ischemic lesions found in examinees of a brain dock (neurological health screening center). Small cerebral … rats or Mongolian gerbils were anesthetized and photothrombotic infarction was induced in the left caudate nucleus or parietal cortex by light exposure via an optic fiber and intravenous Rose Bengal dye injection. Histological examination revealed development of a small spherical infarction surrounding the tip of the optic fiber. The lesion turned to a cyst by 6 …

Increased striatal functional connectivity with auditory cortex in tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a common auditory perceptual disorder whose neural substrates are under intense debate. One physiologically based model posits the dorsal striatum to play a key role in gating auditory phantoms to perceptual awareness. Here, we directly test this model along with the roles of auditory and auditory-limbic networks in tinnitus non-invasively by comparing resting-state fMRI functional connectivity patterns in chronic tinnitus patients against matched control subjects without hearing loss. We assess resting-state functional connectivity of the caudate dorsal striatum (area LC), caudate

Frontal eye field in prosimian galagos: Intracortical microstimulation and tracing studies.

The frontal eye field (FEF) in prosimian primates was identified as a small cortical region, above and anterior to the anterior frontal sulcus, from which saccadic eye movements were evoked with electrical stimulation. Tracer injections revealed FEF connections with cortical and subcortical structures participating in higher order visual processing. Ipsilateral cortical connections were the densest with adjoining parts of the dorsal premotor and prefrontal cortex (PFC). Label in a region corresponding to supplementary eye field (SEF) of other primates, suggests the existence of SEF in galagos.

An acute psychosocial stress enhances the neural response to smoking cues.

Stress plays an important role in drug addiction. It can trigger relapse in abstinent addicts, and both in the everyday world and in the lab … e medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, dorsomedial thalamus, medial temporal lobe, caudate nucleus, and primary and association visual areas. These regions are thought to be involved in visual attention and in assigning incentive value to cues. Stress-induced limbic deactivation predicted subsequent neural cue-reactivity. We suggest that stress i …

Trk neurotrophin receptors in cholinergic neurons of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Besides cortical pathology, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by a loss of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain but not in the caudate nucleus, putamen or mesencephalon. Since cholinergic neurons which degenerate in AD are sensitive to nerve growth factor (NGF), a link between NGF sensitivity and the vulnerability of cholinergic neurons has been suspected. Levels of NGF are not altered in patients with AD, however. Thus, cholinergic nerve cell death in AD could not result from a deficiency in NGF receptors. Using sequential immunohistochemistry with antibodies that recognize pref…

Brain distribution of idebenone and its effect on local cerebral glucose utilization in rats.

To investigate the possible action sites of a cerebral metabolism activator, idebenone, (6-(10-hydroxydecyl)-2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone), its distribution in the brain and effect on local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) were studied in normal (WKY) and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) with cerebrovascular lesions. 14C-Idebenone distributed rapidly into the brain after intravenous administration (10 mg/kg), and the total 14C contents in the brain at peak time corresponded to 0.45-0.56% of the dosages. An autoradiographic study showed that the 14C levels were

Long-term effects of MPTP on central and peripheral catecholamine and indoleamine concentrations in monkeys.

5 Macaca fascicularis monkeys developed a severe parkinsonian syndrome in the days following intravenous administration of the toxin MPTP. One monkey remained untreated while two groups of two animals were treated daily for 5 months with supramaximal oral doses of either Sinemet or bromocriptine. Both drugs relieved the parkinsonian symptoms. Plasma prolactin concentrations were elevated in MPTP-treated monkeys compared to intact monkeys. MPTP caused a rapid decrease of homovanillic acid (HVA) concentrations in the CSF of these monkeys within days of the toxin injection and these values remain
