Occupational fatalities during trenching and excavation work--United States, 1992-2001.

Fatalities associated with trench collapses and other excavation hazards continue to occur despite Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards that specify safe work practices to reduce such hazards to workers. To assess the hazards of trenching and excavation work in the United States, CDC reviewed data from national occupational fatality records and investigative reports of fatal injuries. This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which indicated that 76% of the deaths were caused by cave-ins and 47% of the deaths occurred among employees of companies with < or

Incidence of enhancement of the trigeminal nerve on MRI in patients with multiple sclerosis.

The purpose of this study is to review the incidence of contrast enhancement of the trigeminal nerve on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a large cohort of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). MRI scans of 851 MS patients participating in a phase III clinical trial were reviewed for the presence of gadolinium enhancement on postcontrast T1-weighted images. If enhancement was present, it was documented whether this involved only the proximal or also the distal part of the fifth nerve, and whether the abnormality was unilateral or bilateral. In 24 (2.8%) patients, enhancement of the trigemin

[Treatment of stomach ulcer with the Bulgarian preparation Farmaxolon].

Thirty-four patients with gastric ulcer were treated with the new Bulgarian preparation pharmaxolon-Pharmachim, for 20 days under clinical conditions. A favourable effect on the clinical symptoms by the pharmaxolon treatment was established but the differences with the control placebo group were statistically insignificant. A total of 47.1% from the gastric ulcers were healed after 20-day treatment and in 32.3% were reduced in size but here the difference from the control placebo group was insignificant. Pharmaxolon, with its therapeutic effect equals the related foreign (Biogastrone, Ultranyl

Resection of Meningiomas Invading the Cavernous Sinus: Treatment Strategy and Clinical Outcomes.

Background/Objectives: Resection of tumors invading the cavernous sinus (CS) carries a risk of injury to the cranial nerves and internal carotid artery. Therefore, radical surgery involving lesions around the CS remains challenging, especially for lesions invading the CS, optic sheath, and oculomotor cave. Here, we describe a surgical strategy for meningiomas invading these structures and report on the clinical outcomes. Methods: Surgical resection was indicated in patients with neurological symptoms or rapid tumor growth for the restoration of cranial nerve function. We investigated 13 patien

Typical and atypical MR imaging features of intracranial epidermoid tumors.

OBJECTIVE: We categorized the MR imaging characteristics of intracranial epidermoid tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images from 23 cases of intracranial epidermoid tumors were reviewed retrospectively. Signal intensities of tumor relative to surrounding structures were noted, as were the internal architecture of the tumors and the presence and degree of hydrocephalus. RESULTS: Seventeen (74%) of 23 cases of intracranial epidermoid tumors were revealed as slightly hyperintense relative to CSF on T1-weighted MR images. Nineteen (95%) of 20 cases were hyperintense relative to CSF on proton de

Pretemporal transcavernous transtentorial approach for left pontine glioma.

A 39-year-old man, who had a history of spinal myxopapillary ependymoma with cerebrospinal seeding status post twice operations and radiation therapy, presented with aggravating headaches, diplopia, dysphagia, and unsteady gait for 2 weeks. The brain MRI revealed a parenchymal lesion at the left aspect of the pons, about 2.8 × 2.3 × 3.2 cm3. The patient underwent a pretemporal transcavernous transtentorial approach for tumor removal. The pathological report showed an anaplastic astrocytoma. In this approach, a wider surgical corridor was obtained by opening the Meckel's cave and cutting the te

A Rare Case of Melanotic Schwannoma: Utility of Susceptibility Weighted Sequences in Preoperative Imaging.

Intracranial schwannomas account for 8% of all intracranial tumors, out of which 90% are acoustic schwannomas. Other rare varieties include trigeminal melanotic schwannomas that account for 0.2% of all intracranial tumors. Melanotic schwannomas are intracranial tumors that are heavily pigmented due to the presence of melanin. The most common origination of the tumor involves being confined to Meckel's cave, presenting with features of trigeminal neuralgia, neurasthenia, and numbness. We report a case of a 48-year-old male presenting with dysarthria, left-sided hemiparesis, dysphagia, and heada

Splenic Infarction in Two Members of the Family with Sickle Cell Trait: A Case Report of Rare Complication.

Sickle cell trait is a highly prevalent condition. It is not a disease. However, it has been associated with few rare complications. Splenic infarction is one among them. The altitude-related hypoxia is the most common predisposing factor for this. The simultaneous occurrence of this complication in more than one member of a family is so rare that possibly, it is the only second such case report. We encountered this in two members of a family, the father and his son. They were on a religious visit to a 12,756 feet high mountain cave, when they developed pain left upper abdomen. A thorough work

New records of ectoparasitic Acari (Arachnida) and Streblidae (Diptera) from bats in Jalisco, Mexico.

Ectoparasites of bats in the Neotropics are diverse and play numerous ecological roles as vectors of microbial pathogens and endoparasites and as food sources for other cave fauna living both on their hosts and in bat roosts. The ectoparasites of bats in Jalisco State of western Mexico have not been as well described as those of other states with recent checklists that have focused primarily on the Yucatan Peninsula. We captured bats from 2011-2015 on the south coast and Sierra de Amula, Jalisco using mist nets, and we removed ectoparasites by hand. We identified 24 species of streblid bat fli

Preterm birth in ancient Greece: a synopsis.

This report refers to preterm birth in Ancient Greece based on mythological, historical and archeological data. The two antique goddesses, patronesses of labor and birth, Artemis and Eileithyia, cared for full-term, as well as preterm infants, among them for the mythological preterms Dionysos and Eurystheus. The former was rapidly transported by Hermes and received special care by the nymphs Hyades in a mountain cave with "incubator" properties. Historical data are related to the nine months duration of a normal pregnancy, to the definition of "Elitomina" (preterms), the lower limit of viabili

Central nervous system lymphoma presenting as trigeminal neuralgia: A diagnostic challenge.

We describe an atypical man with diffuse large B cell lymphoma localized to the sphenoid wing and adjacent cavernous sinus, initially presenting with isolated ipsilateral facial pain mimicking trigeminal neuralgia due to invasion of Meckel's cave but subsequently progressing to intra-axial extension and having synchronous features of systemic lymphoma. Primary central nervous system lymphoma is uncommon, accounting for approximately 2% of all primary intracranial tumors, but its incidence has been steadily increasing in some groups [1]. It usually arises in the periventricular cerebral white m

CT and angiography of primary extradural juxtasellar tumors.

The computed tomographic and angiographic features of 15 histologically proven primary extradural juxtasellar tumors were retrospectively reviewed. Five chordomas were characterized by prominent bone erosion and a significant posterior fossa component. Four trigeminal nerve neuromas each demonstrated bone erosion centered about Meckel's cave and moderate to marked contrast enhancement. Two cavernous sinus meningiomas revealed moderate contrast enhancement, expansion of the cavernous sinus, and moderate angiographic stain. Two cavernous hemangiomas of the cavernous sinus were intensely enhancin

MRI findings in pediatric idiopathic intracranial hypertension: evaluating the oculomotor nerve sheath as a potential new diagnostic marker.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) in the pediatric population remains diagnostically challenging, particularly in the absence of papilledema, and increasingly depends on ancillary neuroimaging findings to support clinical assessment. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate established magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance venography (MRV) markers of elevated intracranial pressure in children and to investigate oculomotor nerve cistern (OMC) distention as a potential novel adjunctive imaging biomarker of pediatric IIH. METHODS: This retrospectiv

Homo floresiensis: microcephalic, pygmoid, Australopithecus, or Homo?

The remarkable partial adult skeleton (LB1) excavated from Liang Bua cave on the island of Flores, Indonesia, has been attributed to a new species, Homo floresiensis, based upon a unique mosaic of primitive and derived features compared to any other hominin. The announcement precipitated widespread interest, and attention quickly focused on its possible affinities. LB1 is a small-bodied hominin with an endocranial volume of 380-410 cm3, a stature of 1m, and an approximate geological age of 18,000 years. The describers [Brown, P., Sutikna, T., Morwood, M.J., Soejono, R.P., Jatmiko, Wayhu Saptom

Radiometric analysis of paraclinoid carotid artery aneurysms.

OBJECT: Classification of paraclinoid carotid artery (CA) aneurysms based on their associated branching arteries has been confusing because superior hypophyseal arteries (SHAs) are too fine to appear opacified on cerebral angiograms. The authors performed a retrospective radiometric analysis of surgically treated paraclinoid aneurysms to elucidate their angiographic and anatomical characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made of 85 intradural paraclinoid aneurysms in which the presence or absence of branching arteries had been determined at the time of surgical clipping. The les

Multilayered Human Activities Shape the Microbial Communities of Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystems on an Arid Oceanic Island.

Island coastal aquifers, though spatially limited, sustain key ecosystem functions linked to locally critical provisioning, maintenance and … d patterns dominated by nestedness, indicating localized enrichment linked to anthropogenic inputs. Caves, enclosed marine bays, and hypersaline systems hosted the most compositionally distinct microbial communities, whereas wells and anchialine pools showed greater overlap in community composition. Together, our results suggest that groundwater microbi …

Superconfinement Engineering of Hetero-Nanoparticles in Ultrathin Carbon Nanosheets Enables Highly-Efficient Water Splitting.

Developing highly active and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of great significance for the production of green hydrogen energy. Herein, heterostructured CoP/NiCoP nanoparticles that are encapsulated one-to-one in nano caves of soda-biscuit-like ultrathin carbon nanosheets (CoP/NiCoP/CMS) are prepared, using melamine-formaldehyde sponge (MS) that grew Co/NiCo hydroxides as precursor and phytic acid (PA) as phosphorus source. Especially, the PA-induced blowing behavior during pyrolysis not only transforms the 3D networks of MS into 2D ultrathin carbon nanoshee…
