Exposure to Road Traffic Noise and Incidence of Acute Myocardial Infarction and Congestive Heart Failure: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Toronto, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence for the association between traffic-related noise and the incidence of major cardiovascular events such … 24 and LAeqNight using random-effects Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for individual- and census tract-level covariates, including traffic-related air pollutants [e.g., ultrafine particles (UFPs) and nitrogen dioxide]. RESULTS: During follow-up, there were 37,441 AMI incident cases and 95,138 CHF incident cases. Each interquartile range change in LA …

Airborne metals exposure and risk of hypertension in the Sister Study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension-related disease burden is a major challenge globally, with an estimated 1.56 billion adults expected to be affected by hypertension by 2025. Environmental factors, such as metals, could be risk factors for hypertension, but the relationship between airborne metals and hypertension is rarely studied. METHODS: Census-tract airborne metal concentrations (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, and antimony) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2005 National Air Toxics Assessment database were linked to enrollment residenti

Association between prenatal exposure to ambient diesel particulate matter and perchloroethylene with children's 3rd grade standardized test scores.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this research was to determine if prenatal exposure to two common urban air pollutants, diesel and perchloroethylene, affects children's 3rd grade standardized test scores in mathematics and English language arts (ELA). Exposure estimates consisted of annual average ambient concentrations of diesel particulate matter and perchloroethylene obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency's 1996 National Air Toxics Assessment for the residential census tract at birth. Outcome data consisted of linked birth and educational records for 201,559 singleton, non-anomalous…

The incidence, aetiology and outcome of acute seizures in children admitted to a rural Kenyan district hospital.

BACKGROUND: Acute seizures are a common cause of paediatric admissions to hospitals in resource poor countries and a risk factor for neurological and cognitive impairment and epilepsy. We determined the incidence, aetiological factors and the immediate outcome of seizures in a rural malaria endemic area in coastal Kenya. METHODS: We recruited all children with and without seizures, aged 0-13 years and admitted to Kilifi District hospital over 2 years from 1st December 2004 to 30th November 2006. Only incident admissions from a defined area were included. Patients with epilepsy were excluded.

The impact of geomagnetic disturbances on mortality from respiratory tract infections in the USA, 2000-2019.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a major cause of mortality, particularly among older adults. While air pollution and climate variability are known contributors to RTI risk, the role of solar activity-related short-term geomagnetic disturbances (GMD), remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between GMD, quantified using the 6-month moving average (MA) of the GMD index (Kp), and RTI-related monthly mortality in the United States between 2000 and 2019. METHODS: We analyzed monthly mortality data from 47 contiguous U.S. states using CDC recor

Building a Machine Learning Model to Predict Postpartum Depression from Electronic Health Records in a Tertiary Care Setting.

Adding socioeconomic features from census tract data did not improve predictive performance, underscoring the importance of individual-level data. Childhood exposure to pollution has been associated with elevated levels of depressive symptoms during adolescence. Epidemiological studies … rone, and estradiol (females only) were assayed. We estimated participants' pollution burden at the census tract-level using their residential addresses and publicly available environmental data. We found that female adolescents residing in neighborhoods with greater pollution burden showed delayed adrenarche and gonadarche based on levels of DHEA and estradio …

Mediators of racial and ethnic inequities in clinical trial participation among patients with cancer, 2011-2023.

BackgroundAlthough racially and ethnically minoritized populations are less likely to participate in cancer trials, it is unknown whether social determinants of health (SDOH) explain these inequities. Here we identify SDOH factors that contribute to racial and ethnic inequities in clinical trial participation among patients with 22 common cancers.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study used electronic health record data (2011-2023) linked to neighborhood (US Census tract) data from multiple sources. Patients were followed from diagnosis to clinical study drug receipt (proxy for trial participat…

Association of neighborhood deprivation with white matter connectome abnormalities in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Social determinants of health, including the effects of neighborhood disadvantage, impact epilepsy prevalence, treatment, and outcomes. This study characterized the association between aberrant white matter connectivity in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and disadvantage using a US census-based neighborhood disadvantage metric, the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), derived from measures of income, education, employment, and housing quality. METHODS: Participants including 74 TLE patients (47 male, mean age = 39.2 years) and 45 healthy controls (27 male, mean age = 31.9 years) from the Epi

Improving geographic access to methadone clinics.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid misuse is a nationwide public health crisis. Methadone treatment is proven to be highly successful in preventing opioid use disorder, reducing the use of illicit drugs, and preventing overdoses. Clients acquire methadone daily from clinics, making geographic access crucial for the initiation of and adherence to treatment. METHODS: This work estimates unsatisfied methadone demand due to lack of geographic access at a census tract level and models the problem of identifying optimal locations to open new methadone clinics. The objective function of the model is a weighted co…

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated health inequalities in emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalisations for paediatric respiratory diseases according to material and social deprivation indexes.
