The authors report a case of trigeminal hypesthesia caused by compression of the spinal cord by a C-2 segmental-type vertebral artery (VA) that was successfully treated with microvascular decompression. Aberrant intradural VA loops have been reported as causes of cervical myelopathy, some of which improved with microvascular decompression. A 52-year-old man presented with progressive complaints of headache, dizziness, left facial numbness, and left upper-extremity paresthesia that worsened when turning his head to the right. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine showed the left VA p

Occipital neuralgia is a debilitating disorder first described in 1821 as recurrent headaches localized in the occipital region. Other symptoms that have been associated with this condition include paroxysmal burning and aching pain in the distribution of the greater, lesser, or third occipital nerves. Several etiologies have been identified in the cause of occipital neuralgia and include, but are not limited to, trauma, fibrositis, myositis, fracture of the atlas, and compression of the C-2 nerve root, C1-2 arthrosis syndrome, atlantoaxial lateral mass osteoarthritis, hypertrophic cervical pa

Osseous malformations in the skull and cervical vertebrae of lions in captivity are believed to be caused by hypovitaminosis A. These often lead to severe neurologic abnormalities and may result in death. We describe the characterization of these abnormalities based on computed tomography (CT). CT images of two affected and three healthy lions were compared with define the normal anatomy of the skull and cervical vertebrae and provide information regarding the aforementioned osseous malformations. Because bone structure is influenced by various factors other than the aforementioned disease, al

An unusual case of facial gunshot injury with the missile lodged in the cervical spinal canal, but without any neurological impairment is reported. The extent of tissue damage and missile track termination in a male patient who sustained gunshot trauma to the face was assessed by plain radiography and by CT scans. The patient was treated conservatively and observed for clinical manifestations of neurological deficit for 3 weeks. CT of the head and neck performed 13 years after injury with the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of skeletal elements revealed healed fractures of the right nasa

There are now validated radiographic indices that can be used by clinical investigators to determine the prevalence and severity of OA of the hand, hip, knee, apophyseal joints of the cervical and lumbar spine, and cervical disc degeneration. Clinical investigators should consult standardized atlases for radiographic index descriptions. The use of an atlas and training sessions improve the agreement between and within readers. The standard global grades developed by Kellgren and Lawrence have been used in epidemiologic studies to determine the prevalence of OA in specific joints. The evaluatio

BACKGROUND: RECQL4 is a member of the DNA helicase family and is critical for DNA replication, DNA damage repair, and tumor progression. However, its specific role in cervical cancer remains uncertain.
METHODS: In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of RECQL4 on cervical cancer prognosis using clinical specimens from The Cancer Genome Atlas. We evaluated the malignant effects of RECQL4 through various experimental assays including cell Cell Counting Kit-8, EdU, colony formation, cell cycle analysis, cell apoptosis, scratch, and Transwell assays. We explored the mechanisms of RECQL4

BACKGROUND: Every airway maneuver will cause some degree of neck movement. Ventilation via face-mask technique requires lifting the mandible (jaw thrust) to the facemask. A significant degree of cervical spine motion induced by bag-mask ventilation has been reported on human cadavers with destabilized cervical vertebrae. However, to our knowledge, no quantitative data have reported evaluating the effects of bag-mask ventilation on cervical spine motion in living humans. We measured the cervical spine movement during bag-mask ventilation.
METHODS: Twenty patients requiring general anesthesia w

PURPOSE: Accurate target definition is critical for the appropriate application of radiation therapy. In 2008, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) published an international collaborative atlas to define the clinical target volume (CTV) for intensity modulated pelvic radiation therapy in the postoperative treatment of endometrial and cervical cancer. The current project is an updated consensus of CTV definitions, with removal of all references to bony landmarks and inclusion of the para-aortic and inferior obturator nodal regions.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: An international consensus guid

At present, the posterior cervical approach with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) remains a commonly effective treatment for unstable Atlas fracture. However, the inserted screws into the C1 lateral mass of some unstable atlas fracture are very difficult, so that the operation is forced to change into C0 to C2 fusion. In order to improve the successful rate of lateral mass screw placement, we introduced a method of fixing lateral mass with a towel clamp in posterior transpedicular fixation, and explore the efficacy and feasibility.Twenty-one consecutive patients with unstable atlas

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a major cause of female cancer incidence and mortality globally. Targeted therapy shows promise with higher efficacy and fewer side effects, yet effective biomarkers are needed. CEBPG, a bZIP transcription factor, has attracted attention as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target. It promotes tumor growth in various cancers, but its role in cervical cancer is unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression, biological function, and transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of CEBPG in cervical cancer.
METHODS: This study analyzed CEBPG expressio

BACKGROUND: Accumulating neuroimaging evidence indicates that patients with cervical dystonia (CD) have changes in the cortico-subcortical white matter (WM) bundle. However, whether these patients' WM structural networks undergo reorganization remains largely unclear. We aimed to investigate topological changes in large-scale WM structural networks in patients with CD compared to healthy controls (HCs), and explore the network changes associated with clinical manifestations.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was conducted in 30 patients with CD and 30 HCs, and WM network construction wa

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital clefts and aplasias of the atlas vertebra are rare. A nonfused posterior arch occurs in 4% of the population; in contrast, a nonfused anterior arch occurs in only 0.1%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of the combination of anterior arch aplasia and a cleft of the posterior arch of the atlas associated with Klippel-Feil and Treacher-Collins syndromes and Sprengel deformity.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old girl presented with neck pain and symptoms of myelopathy, including upper- and lower-extremity paresthesia. Computed to

The unstable atlas burst fracture ("Jefferson fracture") is a fracture of the anterior and posterior atlantal arch with rupture of the transverse atlantal ligament and an incongruence of the atlanto-occipital and the atlanto-axial joint facets. The question whether it has to be treated surgically or nonsurgically is still discussed and remains controversial. During the last decade 8 patients with unstable atlas burst fractures were examined and treated in our department. Five of the eight patients were first treated conservatively by external immobilization. Because of continuing instability d

Morphological and morphometric examinations were conducted on skeletons of knotty-tail (knt/knt) mouse, a new autosomal recessive mutant. The knt/knt mice have short and knotty tails. The number of caudal vertebrae is reduced and their deformed caudal vertebrae show no parallelism between the epiphyseal planes and no osseous fusions. Morphological changes, except for the caudal vertebrae, are confined to the neural arches of the axis in knt/knt mice. As for the tail anomaly, the knt gene seems to have the same action as the tk gene, but knt/knt mice differ from other strains with respect to ce

Some abnormalities were observed in the occipital bone, cervical vertebrae and thoracic vertebrae of Weiser-Maples guinea pigs. In the occipital bone, the medial basilar impression was suggested to occur in 40 (32.8%) out of 122 animals. The basilar impression was classified into right, left and both side types and observed in 24, 11 and 5 animals, respectively. The basilar impression was known to be accompanied in human with some anomalies such as platybasia, Klippel-Feil syndrome, deformation of foramen magnum and so-on. These anomalies were also observed in guinea pigs. The fusion of the ax

BACKGROUND: Anterior transarticular screw (ATS) fixation is a useful surgical option for atlantoaxial (AA) stabilization. This report presents a revised ATS method for AA fusion.
METHODS: A 79-year-old male presented with AA instability attributed both to an old odontoid fracture and severe degeneration of the lateral atlantoaxial joints (LAAJs). ATS fixation was performed through the conventional anterior cervical approach. The longest screw trajectories were planned preoperatively using multiplanar reconstruction computed tomography (CT) scans, with entry points of the screws situated at th

There are four solid tumors with common screening options in the average-risk population aged 21 to 75 years (breast, cervical, colorectal, and, based on personalized risk assessment, prostate), but many cancers lack recommended population screening and are often detected at advanced stages when mortality is high. Blood-based multi-cancer early detection tests have the potential to improve cancer mortality through additional population screening. Reported here is a post-hoc analysis from the third Circulating Cell-free Genome Atlas substudy to examine multi-cancer early detection test performa

CONTEXT: The complex anatomy and the importance of ligaments in providing stability at the upper cervical spine region (O-C1-C2) require the use of many imaging modalities to evaluate upper cervical injuries (UCI). While separate classifications have been developed for distinct injuries, a more practical treatment algorithm can be derived from the injury pattern in UCI.
OBJECTIVE: To propose a practical treatment algorithm to guide treatment based on injuries characteristic of UCI.
METHODS: A literature review was performed on the Pubmed database using the following keywords: (1) "occipital
