Anterior subluxation (hyperflexion sprain) is localized, purely ligamentous disruption of the cervical spine caused by a limited flexion force. When associated with a simple wedge fraction, also a flexion injury, anterior subluxation may be the more significant lesion. Radiographically, anterior subluxation is characterised by (1) a localized kyphotic angulation at the level of injury; (2) anterior rotation, or displacement, of the subluxed vertebra; (3) anterior narrowing and posterior widening of the disc space; (4) widening of the space between the subluxed vertebral body and the subjacent

The Boerboel is a South African large-breed dog resembling a Bullmastiff. The records of Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital were searched for dogs that had presented, between 1998 and 2003, with symptoms indicative of wobbler syndrome and had undergone survey radiographic and myelographic studies. Ten cases fitted the inclusion criteria. Dogs presented within the first 2 years of life, often with acute onset of symptoms. All presented with pelvic limb and 6 with concomitant thoracic limb ataxia or paresis. Treatment varied and included none (4), prednisolone (2), and dorsal laminectomy

In this review a new interpretation of the origin of bony developmental malformations affecting the craniocervical junction and the cervical spine is presented based on recent advances in the understanding of embryonic development of the spine and its molecular genetic control. Radiographs, CT and MRI scans or CT myelograms of patients with Klippel-Feil syndrome were used for demonstration. Detailed clinical and radiological analysis of these patients was published earlier [David KM, Stevens JM, Thorogood P, Crockard HA. The dysmorphic cervical spine in Klippel-Feil syndrome: interpretations f

BACKGROUND: Proper identification of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) is important to characterize the relationship between the transitional segment and adjacent levels. Classical classification schemes are inaccurate with respect to the whole spine. We propose a precise vertebral numbering method and investigated the relationship between LSTV and whole-body sagittal alignment.
METHODS: A total of 291 healthy adult volunteers with no history of spinal disease were evaluated with biplanar slot scanning full body stereoradiography to determine the prevalence of LSTV. Vertebrae were cou

Two female (FL 1, FL 2) and one male (ML) 11-wk-old, intact, captive African lion cubs (Panthera leo leo) were presented with a history of mild vestibular signs. Initial serum vitamin A concentrations were low (140 nmol/L) for ML. Calvarial hyperostosis was confirmed using computed tomography (CT) of the head and cervical vertebrae in each cub. CT measurements were adapted in relation to the skull width. ML showed the most pronounced thickening of the tentorium cerebelli and occipital bone, represented by a tentorium cerebelli to skull width ratio (TCR) of 0.08 (FL 1: 0.06, FL 2: 0.05) and a b…

OBJECT: Cervical pedicle screw (PS) misplacement leads to injury of the spinal cord, nerve root, and vertebral artery. Recently, several investigators reported on the usefulness of a spinal navigation system that improves the accuracy of PS insertion. In this study, the authors assessed the accuracy of cervical pedicle, lateral mass, and odontoid screw insertions placed using a 3D fluoroscopy navigation system, the Iso-C3D unit.
METHODS: In this prospective analysis of the authors' initial 50 cases of 3D fluoroscopy-assisted cervical screw insertion, the authors inserted 176 PSs, 58 lateral m

BACKGROUND: The supplemental harvesting of in-situ bone obtained from cervical vertebrae as cage-filling material in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) results in a good fusion outcome. This study aimed to further quantitatively evaluate the obtainable bone volume and clinical outcomes of cervical in-situ autogenous bone grafting based on a three-dimensional (3D) preoperative simulation.
METHODS: This study included 78 patients who underwent single-level ACDF. Prior to the surgical procedure, a 3D simulated surgery was performed by constructing several cutting planes in the cervic…

Physiologic anterior subluxation is a phenomenon that is common to the upper pediatric cervical spine and characterized by the normal forward displacement of one cervical vertebra relative to the subjacent one. Physiologic anterior subluxation can be seen in children in the setting of trauma, when it must be distinguished from pathologic subluxation. Physiologic anterior subluxation has not been reported at lower cervical spinal levels (C 5 to C 6 or C 6 to C 7 ). This is a report of physiologic anterior subluxation at C 5 to C 6 and C 6 to C 7 spinal levels distinguished from pathologic sublu

CASE REPORT: A rare case of Klippel-Feil syndrome associated with anterior cervical meningomyelocele is reported, treated successfully using partial cervical corpectomy, spinal cord microsurgical reinsertion into the spinal canal, and vertebral reconstruction. A 71-year-old patient presented with upper limb paraesthesia, chronic neck pain, and progressive motor distal impairment. Cervical spine imaging revealed an anterior cervical meningomyelocele digging into C7 vertebra and underlying adjacent congenital fusion blocks.
CONCLUSION: An anterior cervical decompression combined with fusion led

UNLABELLED: The Jefferson fracture classification system describes fractures of the atlas (first cervical vertebra or C1). Jefferson fractures with potential tears in the transverse ligament can cause cervical spine instability and can result in neurologic injury if not appropriately diagnosed and managed. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who fell head first with cervical spine tenderness and upper extremity paresthesias. The patient's Jefferson fracture was diagnosed via computed tomography. The patient was then treated non-operatively for his Jefferson fracture, and he had an unremar

Clinical case report and review of the literature. This is the first case of primary leiomyoma in an immunocompetent woman without previous history of uterine leiomyoma being reported in the literature to the best of our knowledge. Leiomyoma, a type of smooth muscle cell tumor, involving the vertebra is extremely rare. There were very few primary leiomyoma in patients with AIDS or in the immune-suppressed patients. This 48-year-old female came with H/o neck pain, weakness and bladder retention. On examination, tone increased in all four limbs, power on the right side of the limbs 4/5, power on

This study was undertaken because there is a dearth of objective information in the literature on the clinical instability of the cervical spine below C2. To our knowledge, it is the first biomechanical investigation designed to analyze clinical stability. We have carried out a quantitative analysis of the behavior of the spine as a function of the systematic destruction of various anatomic elements. Under controlled conditions designed to maintain the biological integrity of the specimens, 17 motion segments from 8 cervical spines were analyzed. The spines were studied with either flexion or

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether bone mineral density (BMD) as measured in planning computed tomographies (CTs) by a new method is a risk factor for pelvic insufficiency fractures (PIF) after radio(chemo)therapy (R(C)T) for cervical cancer.
METHODS: 62 patients with cervical cancer who received definitive or adjuvant radio(chemo)therapy between 2013 and 2017 were reviewed. The PIF were detected on follow-up magntic resonance imaging (MRI). The MRI of the PIF patients was registered to the planning CT and the PIF contoured. On the contralateral side of the fracture, a

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Clinically, the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and surgical instrumentation efficacy is well recognized. Although several studies have quantified the BMD of the human lumbar spine, comprehensive BMD data for the cervical spine is limited. The few available studies included young and healthy patient samples, which may not represent the typical cervical fusion patient. Currently no large scale study provides detailed BMD information of the cervical and first thoracic vertebrae in patients undergoing anterior cervical spine surgery.
PURPOSE: The objective of t

Coma caused by cerebral ischemia is the most serious complication of cerebral ischemia. Four-vessel occlusion can establish a cerebral ischemic coma model for disease research and drug development. However, the commonly used four-vessel occlusion method mainly involves inserting an electrocoagulation pen into the bilateral pterygoid foramen of the first cervical vertebra behind the neck to electrocoagulate the vertebral arteries. This process carries the risk of incomplete electrocoagulation, bleeding, and damage to the brainstem and spinal cord. Twenty-four hours after surgery, re-anesthetize
