OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), total human chorionic gonadotropin (ThCG) and unconjugated estriol in predicting certain complications of pregnancy other than fetal aneuploidy.

A primary intracranial germ cell tumor in a 16-year-old boy secreted both alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). The tumor, located in the right thalamus, contained germinomatous, trophoblastic, and endodermal sinus components. We have investigated whether the expression of hCG genes can be attributed to changes in the structure of the alpha- and beta hCG genes, such as rearrangements, duplications, or methylation patterns. Various tissues and cell lines were studied: two term placentae, three trophoblastic tumor cell lines, two tumor cell lines ectopically producing alpha-subunit, normal cells not producing hCG or subunits, and a nonproducing malignancy.
