BACKGROUND: Ross River virus (RRV) disease is the most widespread mosquito-borne disease in Australia. The disease is maintained in enzootic cycles between mosquitoes and reservoir hosts. During outbreaks and in endemic regions, RRV transmission can be sustained between vectors and reservoir hosts in zoonotic cycles with spillover to humans. Symptoms include arthritis, rash, fever and fatigue and can persist for several months. The prevalence and associated morbidity make this disease a medically and economically important mosquito-borne disease in Australia.

Accurately predicting mosquito population dynamics in cities requires models that couple climatic sensitivity with urban spatial heterogeneity. We developed a spatially explicit, climate-driven framework that integrates satellite imagery, field observations, and biology to simulate Aedes aegypti dynamics across heterogeneous urban landscapes. A decomposition technique was introduced to disentangle entomological observations from mixed urban sites into landscape-specific time series for houses, streets, and parks. We provide a robust parameter estimation through a constrained inverse problem, r

Although a differential sensitivity of cholera dynamics to climate variability has been reported in the spatially heterogeneous megacity of Dhaka, Bangladesh, the specific patterns of spread of the resulting risk within the city remain unclear. We build on an established probabilistic spatial model to investigate the importance and role of human mobility in modulating spatial cholera transmission. Mobility fluxes were inferred using a straightforward and generalizable methodology that relies on mapping population density based on a high resolution urban footprint product, and a parameter-free

Ticks, being ectothermic, are highly sensitive to climate variables, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation. Over the past century, fossil fuel use has altered the climate and significantly affected the tick-host-pathogen system. These changes influence tick lifecycles, behavior, vector competency, host dynamics, and pathogen transmission. Consequently, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have experienced shifts in their geographical range, incidence, and host preferences, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. While climate change drives the emergence of vector-borne diseases, key aspects,

Extreme precipitation is intensifying under climate change, yet watershed management frameworks built on annual or seasonal load budgets remain blind to the sub-weekly episodic pulses that can restructure pollutant transport. We present the Budget-Closed Graph-based Source Apportionment (BC-GSA) framework, which couples a graph attention network with an algebraic mass-balance constraint that forces exact closure (ε 0): nonpoint-source (NPS) loads are computed as the deterministic residual of observed flux minus upstream transport and point-source (PS) inventory, eliminating the 5-15% budget le

Urban drainage systems are composed of subsystems. The ratio of the storage and discharge capacities of the subsystems determines the performance. The performance of the urban water system may deteriorate as a result of the change in the ratio of storage to discharge capacity due to aging, urbanisation and climate change. We developed the graph-based weakest link method (GBWLM) to analyse urban drainage systems. Flow path analysis from graph theory is applied instead of hydrodynamic model simulations to reduce the computational effort. This makes it practically feasible to analyse urban draina

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) occurs widely in Northeastern China, but the mechanism and interactions of meteorological and socio-economic factors on the transmission of HFRS are still largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We explored the effects of socioeconomic-environmental factors on the spatio-temporal variation of HFRS incidence from 2001 to 2019 in Northeastern China. Specifically, the relative importance and contribution rates (CR) of determinants of HFRS were identified by boosted regression tree and variance partitioning analysis, respectively. Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is an important vector-borne disease with an incidence of 15.8 cases per 100,000 people in Iran in 2019. Despite all efforts to control the disease, ZCL has expanded into new areas during the last decades. The aim of this study was to predict the best ecological niches for both vectors and reservoirs of ZCL under climate change scenarios in Iran. Several online scientific databases were searched. In this study, various scientific sources (Google Scholar, PubMed, SID, Ovid Medline, Web of Science, Irandoc, Magiran) were searched. The inclusion criteria for

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis is a parasitic vector-borne disease of increasing public health importance. Since the first human case was reported in 1957, zoonotic species have been reported on nearly every continent. Zoonotic Babesia is vectored by Ixodes ticks and is commonly transmitted in North America by Ixodes scapularis, the tick species responsible for transmitting the pathogens that also cause Lyme disease, Powassan virus, and anaplasmosis in humans. Predicted climate change is expected to impact the spread of vectors, which is likely to affect the distribution of vector-borne diseases inclu

In the global effort to mitigate climate change, the cement sector remains highly emission-intensive and hard-to-decarbonize. Previous research has highlighted material efficiency strategies─including more intensive use, lifetime extension, material-efficient design, and end-of-life processes, as demand-side options for reducing emissions. However, unintended effects and supply side responses, such as shifts in technological portfolios and investment trends, remain underexplored. This study develops a framework that couples detailed stock-flow modeling and a bottom-up energy system optimizatio

We developed a stochastic model for quantitative risk assessment for the Schistosoma mansoni (SM) parasite, which causes an endemic disease of public concern. The model provides answers in a useful format for public health decisions, uses data and expert opinion, and can be applied to any landscape where the snail Biomphalaria glabrata is the main intermediate host (South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa). It incorporates several realistic and case-specific features: stage-structured parasite populations, periodic praziquantel (PZQ) drug treatment for humans, density dependence,

The growing energy consumption in Islamabad is escalating temperatures and climate-related risks for residents, exacerbated by the absence of sustainable strategies. Therefore, this study was conducted to probe climate pollutants (carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and methane (CH4)) levels in the built environment of Islamabad. Based on these emissions, a nature-based solutions (NbS) approach was then proposed to manage the identified pollutants from urban developments. Data on electricity consumption (n = 44,792), natural gas usage (n = 33,632), and carbon fluxes were

Wildlife-origin viral diseases are an increasing One Health challenge in Australia, with climate change emerging as a key driver of disease emergence, transmission, and spillover. Australian wildlife, particularly marsupials, birds, and bats, serve as important reservoirs of zoonotic and vector-borne viruses. However, the combined influence of wildlife reservoirs and climate change on viral disease ecology in Australia has not been comprehensively synthesised. This review examines the epidemiology, significance, and climate sensitivity of wildlife-associated viral diseases and evaluates how cl
