The Effects of Risperidone on Cognition in People With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Autism spectrum disorder is made up of several disorders, which include autism, Asperger syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls with autism spectrum disorder, and symptoms usually become apparent by the age of three. Autism spectrum disorders' core characteristic features are abnormal interaction, impairment in communication, and stereotyped behaviors with restricted activities and interests. There are also non-core features associated with autism spectrum disorder, and these are aggression, self-injurious behavior, and tantru

Can thiamine substitution restore cognitive function in alcohol use disorder?

AIMS: While clinical consequences of thiamine deficiency in alcohol use disorder (AUD) are severe, evidence-based recommendations on dosage, type of administration and duration of thiamine substitution (TS), and its' target levels remain sparse. This study aimed to compare the effect of two best practice TS regimens on thiamine blood levels (i.e. thiamine pyrophosphate, TPP) and cognitive function. METHODS: In 50 patients undergoing in-patient alcohol-withdrawal treatment, TPP levels were determined at baseline and end of weeks 1, 2 and 8 following administration of oral TS (3 × 100 mg/day fo

Challenges and Considerations in Treating Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The prototypical patient with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) is often thought to possess positive symptoms. However, patients with SSDs can present with predominantly negative and cognitive symptoms, which can create diagnostic and treatment challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old female veteran presented to the emergency department with diminished speech output, markedly blunted affect, tangential speech, was not oriented to situation, and appeared to be responding to internal stimuli. Following inpatient admission, the veteran was diagnosed with schizoaffective dis

Meta-analysis of sugar-sweetened beverage intake and the risk of cognitive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological studies revealed inconsistent associations between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and cognitive disorders, but there have been no meta-analyses of the pooled results. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed to determine the association between SSB consumption and cognitive disorders. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature prior to May 20, 2022 was performed using the PubMed and Web of Science databases. Random effects models were used to calculate and combine odds ratios (ORs) depending on the degree of heterogeneity. RESULTS: 13 studies m

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia: Conceptualization, Assessment and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

There is little doubt that schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are among the most severe disorders to impact humanity. They are both common, significantly disabling and have the tendency to strike during critical developmental periods in a young person's life. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the global population and OCD has a lifetime prevalence of between 2% and 3% in the general population. The comorbidities in both SZ and OCD are common and frequently diagnosed, and research has generally found that comorbidities are associated with conditions that are more

Serum levels of olanzapine are associated with acute cognitive effects in bipolar disorder.

Bipolar (BPD) patients have deficits in cognition, but there are still controversies about the effects of some medications on their cognitive performance. Here, we investigated the relationship between cognition in terms of executive functions, memory, and attention in both first-episode medication-naive BPD patients and BPD patients taking olanzapine. Forty-one healthy controls, 40 unmedicated drug-naive BPD patients, and 34 BPD patients who took only olanzapine were recruited for the study. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Flanker test, Stroop test, and Corsi-block test. Bayesian

A specific cognitive behavioral group therapy program for stimulant use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Stimulant use is an important health issue. In the US in 2018, 2.8% of males and 1.5% of females older than 18 had used cocaine in the preceding 12 months. OBJECTIVE: To intervene in a specific targeted group of Stimulant Use Disorder (SUD) patients according to CBT and relapse prevention theories, and to determine the program's feasibility and attendance. METHOD: Stimulant Use Disorder patients in addiction care were evaluated for addictive, psychological and psychiatric dimensions at baseline and conclusion in a 9-session CBT group program with several themes: define SUD, enh

A Review of Motivational Interviewing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a portion people with OCD do not benefit fully from CBT due to ambivalence about participating in treatment, nonadherence to exposure exercises, and dropout. This paper reviews the promising evidence for motivational interviewing (MI) as a therapeutic approach that is well suited to address these issues and potentially improve treatment outcomes. It will also provide a discussion of MI processes that may enhance CBT for OCD which can foster a collaborative relat

Role of comorbid depressive symptoms on the cognitive deficits in obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic distressing condition that is marked with impairment in daily functioning including social, family, and occupational areas of life. Depression is the most common comorbidity among patients with OCD. The presence of co-occurring depressive symptoms adds to the burden of the OCD. Previous studies with neuropsychological testing reveals a pattern of cognitive deficits among patients with OCD. Few studies have also shown that the cognitive deficits in OCD are mediated by comorbid depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this stu

The role of cognitive factors in differentiating individuals with somatoform disorders with and without depression.

The present study, based on a cross-sectional design, was conducted in the primary care setting with patients presenting somatic symptoms suggestive of somatoform disorders (SFD). The main aim of the study was to determine whether cognitive variables could differentiate between patients with SFD alone and those who also present depressive symptoms suggestive of depression (SFD + depression). All participants (N = 796) completed validated self-report measures to assess somatic, depressive, and/or anxiety symptoms, as well as functional impairment, quality of life (QoL), and cognitive variables

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for adults with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

There are currently no evidence-based treatments for adults with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and proof-of-concept of cognitive-behavioral therapy for ARFID (CBT-AR) for adults. Males and females (ages 18-55 years) were offered 20-30 outpatient sessions of CBT-AR delivered by one of five therapists. Of 18 eligible adults offered CBT-AR, 15 chose to participate and 14 completed treatment. All patients endorsed high ratings of treatment credibility and expected improvement after the first session, and

Improving cognitive functioning in major depressive disorder with psychedelics: A dimensional approach.

The high symptomatic and biological heterogeneity of major depressive disorder (MDD) makes it very difficult to find broadly efficacious treatments that work against all symptoms. Concentrating on single core symptoms that are biologically well understood might consist of a more viable approach. The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework is a trans-diagnostic dimensional approach that focuses on symptoms and their underlying neurobiology. Evidence is accumulating that psychedelics may possess antidepressant activity, and this can potentially be explained through a multi-level (psychobiologi

Motivational Interviewing Enhances Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Disorders.

This pilot study tested whether the addition of motivational interviewing (MI) prior to group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety may improve the effectiveness of the treatment. Prior to group CBT, 40 individuals with a principal diagnosis of an anxiety disorder (40% panic disorder, 25% generalized anxiety disorder, 22.5% social phobia, and 12.5% others) were randomly assigned to receive either three individual sessions of MI or were assigned to a control group that did not receive MI. The pretreatment MI group, compared to the control group, experienced significantly greater reduct

Cognitive Variables in Social Anxiety Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Network Analysis.

Clark and Wells' prominent model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) assumes that cognitive variables such as negative expectations or dysfunctional cognitions play a central role in the symptomatology of SAD. In contrast to adults, it is less clear how well the cognitive model can be applied to children and adolescents. A network analysis with seven nodes was conducted to explore the importance of cognitive variables and their interaction with symptoms of SAD based on N = 205 children and adolescents (8-18 years, M = 11.54 years). Cognitive variables had a high but differential impact within the

Cognitive Assessment in GNAO1 Neurodevelopmental Disorder Using an Eye Tracking System.

GNAO1 gene mutations are associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmental delay, epilepsy, and movement disorder. Eye tracking and eye movement analysis are an intriguing method to assess cognitive and language function and, to the best of our knowledge, it has never been tested in a standardized way in GNAO1. GNAO1 children are usually wheelchair-bound and with numerous motor constrains, including dystonic movements and postures, heterotropia, and hypotonia, making the cognitive assessment arduous. These contribute to the burden and disability, with a high level of

New developments in cognitive-behavioural therapy for eating disorders (CBT-ED).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent developments in cognitive-behavioural therapy for eating disorders (CBT-ED). More specifically, the past five years were covered, with the latest UK and Dutch guidelines for eating disorders as a starting benchmark, and with special consideration of the past 18 months. RECENT FINDINGS: The new research can be divided into findings that have: (1) reinforced our existing understanding of CBT-ED's models and impact; (2) advanced our understanding and the utility of CBT-ED, including its application for the 'new' disorder Avoidant/Restrictive Food

Evaluation of the cognitive behavioural theory of eating disorders: A network analysis investigation.

OBJECTIVE: One of the prevailing theories of eating disorders (ED) is the transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural theory of eating disorders, which suggests that certain ED symptoms, such as over-valuation of eating, shape, and weight, may be more central than others. In the present study, network analyses were used to evaluate these assumptions in a patient sample. METHODS: Participants were 336 individuals receiving treatment at an expert center for ED in the Netherlands. Eating disorder symptoms were used to create transdiagnostic and diagnosis-specific networks and assess symptom centrality

Stress Hormones as Predictors of Response to Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Panic Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Data regarding the potential association between the outcome of psychotherapy of panic disorder (PD) and biological parameters are few. In 21 (16 females) consecutively referred, medication-free, acutely ill PD outpatients, without comorbidities, except agoraphobia, we systematically explored for potential neuroendocrine and clinical correlates of response to a brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). METHODS: Cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) basal plasma levels were measured. Measures of psychopathology: (a) Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), (b) Clinical Globa

Deficits of social cognition in bipolar disorder: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association between impaired social cognition and bipolar disorder (BD) is well established. However, to our knowledge, there has not been a recent systematic review that characterizes disparate dimensions of social cognition in BD. Herein, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the literature on core aspects of social cognition (i.e., Theory of Mind, emotion recognition, and social judgment) to identify potential areas of impairment. METHODS: Online databases (i.e., PubMed, Cochrane Libraries, PsycINFO) and Google Scholar were searched from inception to
