Executive function in sleep apnea: controlling for attentional capacity in assessing executive attention.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: As the effects of general slowness and decreased attentional capacity on higher executive attention have not been fully taken into account in the sleep apnea literature, we statistically controlled for basic attentional performance in evaluating executive attention per se in sleep apnea patients. DESIGN: A case-controlled design was used with comparison of basic and executive attentional tasks. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-six polysomnographically diagnosed patients (mean apnea-hypopnea index = 60.5 +/- SD 31.6) participated, together with 32 healthy controls. MEASUREMENTS AND RES

Moral emotions in mental health: regulation and mediation.

Moral emotions-such as guilt, shame, compassion, and gratitude-play a central role in shaping psychological functioning and mental health. This mini review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical research on the regulatory roles and mediating mechanisms of moral emotions in mental health outcomes. It is demonstrated that moral emotions activate both adaptive (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, self-compassion) and maladaptive (e.g., rumination, suppression) regulatory processes that significantly influence emotional resilience or vulnerability. Additionally, psychological flexibility, emotion r

Time-based and event-based prospective memory in autism spectrum disorder: the roles of executive function and theory of mind, and time-estimation.

Prospective memory (remembering to carry out an action in the future) has been studied relatively little in ASD. We explored time-based (car … ry performance was associated significantly with diminished theory of mind, but not with diminished cognitive flexibility. There was no evidence that time-estimation ability contributed to time-based prospective memory impairment in ASD.

Inhibitory control in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Impairments in executive abilities such as cognitive flexibility have been identified in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It remains unclear, however, whether such individuals also experience impairments in another executive ability: inhibitory control. In the present study, we administered three inhibitory tasks to 18 children with ASD, 23 siblings of children with ASD, and 25 typically developing children. After controlling for individual differences in age, overall IQ, and processing speed, children with ASD demonstrated impaired performance on two of the three inhibitory ta…

Family functioning and parents' dispositions moderate the affective, attentional and physiological consequences of rumination in children.

In adults, rumination has been associated with costs at affective, cognitive, and physiological levels. We examined if rumination in children is characterized by the same dysfunctional consequences and the possible moderating role of family functioning (cohesion and flexibility) and parents' trait rumination and depression. After induction of rumination, forty children (20 girls; 9.6 years) performed a tracking task with thought probes while their mood, reaction times (RT), heart rate (HR), and variability (HRV) were assessed. Self-reported episodes of rumination were associated with higher HR

Evaluation of the relationship development intervention program.

This study is the second in a series evaluating the effectiveness of Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) to address unique deficits inherent in autism spectrum disorders. RDI is a parent-based, cognitive-developmental approach, in which primary caregivers are trained to provide daily opportunities for successful functioning in increasingly challenging dynamic systems. This study reviewed the progress of 16 children who participated in RDI between 2000 and 2005. Changes in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), flexibility, and

Medial temporal lobe encodes cognitive maps of real-world social networks.

Humans routinely solve social problems by navigating densely interconnected networks-gossiping strategically, brokering across cliques, and coordinating with allies. Yet, the neural representations supporting such complex navigation remain undocumented, leaving a crucial gap in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying flexible social cognition. We combine computational modeling with fMRI and a longitudinal measurement of a large, real-world social network (N = 187) to show that the medial temporal lobe encodes an abstract cognitive map of long-range connectivity in the broader network. The influence of self-reported history of mild traumatic brain injury on cognitive performance.

The long-term cognitive consequences of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are poorly understood. Studies investigating cognitive performanc … th a history of mTBI (n = 30) did not demonstrate deficits in working memory, multitasking ability, cognitive flexibility, visuospatial ability, response inhibition, information processing speed or social cognition. There was moderate evidence that the mTBI group performed better than control participants on the visual working memory measure. Overall, these findings su …

Neural mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment in depression and cognitive benefits of exercise intervention.

Depression is associated with functional brain impairments, although comprehensive studies remain limited. This study reviews neural mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment in depression and identifies associated activation abnormalities in brain regions. The study also explores the underlying neural processes of cognitive benefits of exercise intervention for depression. Executive function impairments, including working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility are associated with frontal cortex and anterior cingulate areas, especially dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Depression …

Comparative effects of supervised and unsupervised physical activity on physical fitness among doctoral scholars: a non-randomized parallel-group feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: Doctoral scholars face unique health challenges due to limited time to engage in health-enhancing physical activity (PA). However, limited research has explored the effects of PA in this population. This non-randomized parallel-group feasibility trial aimed to compare the effects of supervised PA (SPA) and unsupervised PA (USPA) on physical fitness and cognitive function among university doctoral scholars. METHODS: Thirty-seven physically inactive doctoral scholars (age: 26.9 ± 2.4 years; BMI: 23.7 ± 2.3 kg/m²) from two institutional clusters of a university were assigned to one of

Benefits of Multimodal Exercise Intervention for BDNF and Cytokines Levels, Cognitive Function, and Motor Functionality in Alzheimer's Disease: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise has been linked to improvements in motor and cognitive functions as well as to the modulation of neurotrophic and inflammatory factors, particularly in older adults. This aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 12-week multimodal exercise program on cognitive function, motor performance, and plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cytokines in elderly individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: A non-randomized controlled trial design was employed, involving 23 participants aged 62 to 85 years diagnosed with mild to mod

Cortical Thinning and Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease without Dementia.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by motor dysfunction (bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability), and pathologically by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia. Growing literature supports that cognitive deficits may also be present in PD, even in non-demented patients. Gray matter (GM) atrophy has been reported in PD and may be related to cognitive decline. This study investigated cortical thickness in non-demented PD subjects and elucidated its relationship to cognitive impairme
