Tryptophan: A Unique Role in the Critically Ill.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid whose metabolites play key roles in diverse physiological processes. Due to low reserves in the body, especially under various catabolic conditions, tryptophan deficiency manifests itself rapidly, and both the serotonin and kynurenine pathways of metabolism are clinically significant in critically ill patients. In this review, we highlight these pathways as sources of serotonin and melatonin, which then regulate neurotransmission, influence circadian rhythm, cognitive functions, and the development of delirium. Kynurenines serve important signaling functio

Change of heart, change of mind, or change of willpower? Explaining the dynamic relationship between experienced and perpetrated incivility change.

As organizational scholarship increasingly recognizes the dynamic nature of interpersonal stressors like workplace incivility, the present study investigates workplace incivility change and the mechanisms through which it affects employees. Whereas prior research demonstrates that employees who experience workplace incivility are likely to engage in similar behavior because of depleted self-control, the current investigation draws on Metcalfe and Mischel's (1999) dual-process model to examine additional affective and cognitive mechanisms underlying this dynamic process. We propose that interce

An examination of the relationships between specific learning disabilities identification and growth rate, achievement, cognitive ability, and student demographics.

Students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) represent a large proportion of those receiving special education services in U.S. schools, but the relationship between student-level variables and SLD identification is still not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which data collected as part of a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation were associated with SLD identification status. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine how response to intervention (RtI) slope (i.e., growth rate), academic achievement, global cognitive ability, and demogr

Emotion malleability beliefs and coping with the college transition.

First-year students navigating the transition to undergraduate life experience an increase in psychopathology, yet some students thrive while others struggle. The current study examined whether first-year students' beliefs about emotion's malleability predicted emotion regulation and mental health during this critical period. First-year college students completed a battery of self-report questionnaires at the beginning and end of the fall semester. Students who held more malleable views of emotion at the semester's onset reported more of a decrease in depression, more of an increase in the use

Associations of Wearable-Measured Sleep and Physical Activity With Memory Performance in Older Adults: Cross-Sectional Study With Actigraphy and MRI.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is a common aspect of aging, and identifying modifiable lifestyle factors, such as physical activity and sleep, is crucial for promoting healthy brain aging. While both are individually linked to cognition, few studies have simultaneously assessed their independent and combined effects using objective wearable-based data, particularly in older Asian populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the independent and interactive effects of wearable-assessed sleep and physical activity parameters on memory performance in healthy older adults. We also explored w

Interrogating cognitive and neural group variation in childhood: Examples in adolescent brain cognitive development and Oregon attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-1000 cohorts.

Multiple large-scale efforts are underway that share a goal of revising psychological diagnostic nosology to better align with mechanistic features, including cognitive and neural development. Latent grouping approaches may be helpful. However, to date, evidence for replicable and clinically useful cognitive or neuroimaging-based subgroups is weak. Here, we apply common clustering approaches (k-means and latent profile analysis) to (a) cognitive features, including measures of executive functioning and computational reaction time parameters, and (b) structural brain imaging features in the Ado

Growth-associated protein 43 is associated with faster functional decline among amyloid-positive individuals with objectively defined subtle cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Objectively defined subtle cognitive decline (Obj-SCD) is an emerging classification that may identify individuals at risk for future decline and progression to Alzheimer's disease prior to a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43), a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) marker of synaptic dysfunction, has been shown to relate to an increased risk of converting to dementia, although it is unclear whether GAP-43 alterations may be detected in pre-MCI stages. Therefore, in the present study, we examined CSF GAP-43 levels among individuals with Obj-SCD

Slight and hidden hearing loss in young rats is associated with impaired recognition memory and reduced myelination in the corpus callosum.

Slight and hidden hearing loss in children have been linked to cognitive and social difficulties, and yet the neurobiological mechanisms behind these issues remain poorly understood. Most animal models focus on severe hearing loss, leaving the effects of hidden or slight hearing loss largely unexplored. To uncover the neural mechanisms connecting slight/hidden hearing loss to cognitive and social challenges, we induced hearing loss in young (4-week-old) Wistar rats through noise exposure. We then examined cognitive function (object recognition test) and social behavior (juvenile play behavior

Agreement between mother, father, and teacher ratings of cognitive disengagement syndrome (sluggish cognitive tempo) in children with autism and children with ADHD.

No studies have analyzed differences between mother, father, and teacher ratings of cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS; formerly sluggish cognitive tempo). The sample included 1,115 children with autism and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 4-16 years of age who were rated by mothers on the Pediatric Behavior Scale. Subsets of these children were also rated by fathers and/or teachers, resulting in 896 mother/father, 964 mother/teacher, and 745 father/teacher dyads. The CDS factor comprised four items assessing the core features of CDS: cognitive disengagement (in a fog/conf

Do cognition and other person-level characteristics determine housing outcomes among homeless-experienced adults with serious mental illness?

Objective: Many persons with serious mental illness (SMI) who have experienced homelessness struggle to sustain stable and independent housing. We know little about determinants of this population's housing status. This study aimed to identify person-level determinants of housing status among homeless-experienced veterans with SMI, focused primarily on cognition. Method: We administered cross-sectional surveys and detailed cognitive assessments on a convenience sample of homeless-experienced veterans with SMI (n = 90); we also reviewed these participants' medical records. We captured person-le

Early childhood depression, emotion regulation, episodic memory, and hippocampal development.

Depression in adults is associated with deficits in a number of cognitive domains, however it remains less clear how early in development theses deficits can be detected in early onset depression. There are several different hypotheses about the links between cognitive function and depression. For example, it has been argued that executive function deficits contribute to emotion regulation difficulties, which in turn increase risk for depression. Further, it has been suggested that some cognitive deficits, such as episodic memory, may reflect hippocampal abnormalities linked to both depression

"Non-Eloquent" brain regions predict neuropsychological outcome in tumor patients undergoing awake craniotomy.

Supratotal resection of primary brain tumors is being advocated especially when involving "non-eloquent" tissue. However, there is extensive … hesize that the volume of tissue within the right lateral orbital frontal lobe represents important cognitive reserve capacity in patients undergoing tumor surgery. Our data also cautions the neurosurgeon when considering supratotal resections of tumors that do not extend into areas considered "non-eloquent" by current standards.

Recent advances and controversial issues in the optimal management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal management of patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis (AsxCS) is enduringly controversial. We updated our 2021 Expert Review and Position Statement, focusing on recent advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with AsxCS. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed up to August 1, 2023, using PubMed/PubMed Central, EMBASE and Scopus. The following keywords were used in various combinations: "asymptomatic carotid stenosis," "carotid endarterectomy" (CEA), "carotid artery stenting" (CAS), and "transcarotid artery revascularization" (TCAR).

Plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration and intraindividual cognitive variability: Comparing variability across test at one time point and using repeated ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Intraindividual cognitive variability (IICV) is a promising measure for early identification of dementia risk. Fewer studies have assessed IICV using high-frequency digital cognitive assessment or in populations with medical conditions. We aimed to characterize associations between IICV for reaction time and accuracy with plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration (phosphorylated tau 181, phosphorylated tau 217, β-amyloid 42/40 ratio, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and neurofilament light chain) in individuals with Type 1 diabetes. Impaired auditory sensory gating as a neurophysiological correlate of cognitive fatigue in long COVID.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is among the most disabling symptoms across neurological and postinfectious conditions and is a defining feature of long COVID, yet objective neurophysiological markers remain scarce. Auditory sensory gating, indexed by P50 suppression, has been proposed as a correlate of cognitive fatigue in multiple sclerosis, but its relevance in long COVID is unclear. Additionally, we compared the utility of the Beck Depression Inventory-II and Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS) in this fatigued population. METHOD: Seventy-one individuals with long COVID-related fatigue comp

Cognitive effects and correlates of reading fiction: Two preregistered multilevel meta-analyses.

Despite significantly increasing research efforts, the psychological effects of reading fiction remain under debate. We present two preregistered meta-analyses synthesizing cognitive effects and correlates of reading fiction. In Meta-Analysis 1 (371 effect sizes/70 experiments), reading fiction led to significant small-sized cognitive benefits, g = 0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.06, 0.21]. This effect of fiction reading was moderated by the comparison group (effects were greater when reading fiction was compared with watching fiction or reading nothing than when reading fiction was comp

Cognitive profiles following sport-related concussion in high school athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Heterogeneity is common following traumatic brain injury (TBI) with important implications for clinical outcome. Research in moderate to severe TBI identifies differentiated cognitive profiles. There is little research investigating potential clusters following sport concussion. METHODS: Cluster analysis was used to determine patterns of Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) performance at three time points (72 hr, 4-7 days, and 8-30 days postconcussion). Participants included 1,817 high-school athletes (Mage = 15.5; 37.9% female) who completed ImPACT
