Anomalies of the appendix are extremely rare, and a horseshoe appendix is even rarer. A literature search has revealed only five reported cases. In this report, we present a case of a horseshoe appendix.A 78-year-old man was referred for further examination following a positive fecal occult blood test. A mass in his ascending colon was detected on colonoscopy, while computed tomography showed that it was connected to the appendix. Tumor invasion derived from the ascending colon or appendix was suspected. We diagnosed ascending colon cancer prior to laparoscopic ileocecal resection. Macroscopic

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced colonic strictures are uncommon and usually occur in the proximal ascending colon. We describe the progressive findings of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced strictures in the ascending colon and at the ileocecal valve with subsequent bowel obstruction secondary to intussusception.

We report a rare case of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing undifferentiated carcinoma of the ascending colon. A 52-year-old Japanese man presented with a rapidly growing, aggressive abdominal tumor, and severe leukocytosis (63 000/mm(3)). The serum level of G-CSF was remarkably elevated to 640 pg/ml (normal, <18.1 pg/ml). The patient underwent palliative cytoreductive surgery for ascending colon carcinoma with lymph node and liver metastases. Histological examination revealed an undifferentiated carcinoma of the ascending colon. The tumor cells were positive for G-CSF on

A 68-year-old man with rising PSA (0.363 ng/mL) 6 years post-prostatectomy underwent 18 F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT. The scan revealed rib metastasis and an unexpected PSMA-avid focus in the ascending colon. Previous 68 Ga-PSMA and subsequent 18 F-FDG PET both showed no abnormal uptake in the ascending colon area. Colonoscopy confirmed an ascending colon diverticulum. This rare case demonstrates intense 18 F-PSMA-1007 uptake in a colonic diverticulum, likely attributable to PSMA expression by neovascular endothelium or inflammatory cells. Clinicians should consider colonic diverticulum in the different

The study used 3, 7, 16 and 22 month-old male rats bred at the animal farm of the Institute. Identical age-related changes were established in the level of free cholesterol, its esters, free cholesterol/phospholipids and sphingomyelin/lecithin ratios in ascending and descending colon mucosa. Unlike descending colon mucosa, the basal and hormone-stimulating activity of adenylate cyclase and rate of lipid peroxidation in the mucosa of the ascending colon of 22 month-old animals were lower than in 16 month-old rats. The results are compared with the available data on the predominant localization

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the colon types, developmental change of the colon morphology during the fetal period.
METHODS: The study was realised on 131 human fetuses (male 69, female 62) ages between 10 and 40 weeks, which have no external pathology and anomalies. The colon types were evaluated in two parts. As the first part, the colon part between the ileal orifice and sigmoid colon was typed. The sigmoid colon was typed as the second part. The macroscopic diameters of parts of the colon and the thicknesses of wall layers of ascending and descending colons were measur

The effects of neurotensin on colonic motility were investigated in 6 healthy volunteers (rectosigmoid area) and 7 patients (ascending colon and at the splenic flexure). Neurotensin (12 pmol/kg X min) infused intravenously for 30 min increased the duration of the contractions to 76% in the ascending colon and 46% in the rectosigmoid area. In the postinfusion period, the values were 42% and 67%, respectively. The motor activity did not change significantly at the splenic flexure. During the infusion period, the motility index increased from 870 to 4500 in the ascending colon and from 332 to 170

Crohn's disease can occur anywhere along the small and/or large intestines, but most commonly occurs in the terminal ileum or ascending colon. Factors governing this region-specific inflammation are poorly understood. In this issue of the JCI, Spencer et al. used a TNF-driven mouse model of small intestinal Crohn's disease to identify a specific bacterial pathobiont, Chlamydia muridarum, as a necessary and sufficient driver of region-restricted inflammation. C. muridarum triggered increased goblet cell expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) in the mouse proximal colon, analogous to

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) is an excellent way to study the small bowels. During such an examination, the colon is also seen within the field of study. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of MRE in detecting characteristics of active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the colon, in comparison to different features seen in colonoscopies.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted with 41 children. Features of active inflammation we considered were wall thickening; contrast enhancement; incorrect signal in the DWI sequence in the MRE; and presenc

INTRODUCTION: Single-port laparoscopic extended right hemicolectomy with complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation is technically challenging, and a standardized procedure is needed to minimize technical hazards.
TECHNIQUE: As a first step, the hepatic flexure is mobilized from the duodenum, and the third part of the duodenum and pancreatic head was exposed. Next, the ileocecal vessels are divided at the root using a medial-to-lateral approach, and the cecum is separated from the retroperitoneal space. This process completes the mobilization of the right colon. In the second s

We encountered a patient with colon lymphangioma and performed laparoscopy-assisted ileocecal resection. The patient was a 68-year-old male who visited our hospital for weight loss in May 1999. Since fecal occult blood was positive on close examination, colonoscopy was performed. A light-permeable, transparent, and pedunculated polyp was found in the ascending colon and diagnosed as submucosal tumor. The patient was admitted for close examination and treatment. Abdominal CT detected a tumor in the ascending colon accompanied by disturbed surrounding adipose tissue, suggesting extramural invasi

The patient was a 71-year-old woman diagnosed with mesenteric phlebosclerosis(MP)2 years earlier. CT performed to investigate her abdominal pain revealed an ascending colon obstruction. Colonoscopy(CS)revealed MP extending to the ascending colon hepatic flexure with stenosis and a cecal tumor(biopsy tub1). Although the cancerous lesion itself was potentially curable by endoscopic treatment, it was surgically resected because of the ascending colon stenosis caused by the MP that had also caused intestinal obstruction. Intraoperative findings revealed wall thickening and stiffening from the cecu

A 52-year-old man died soon after admission to hospital with a severe metabolic acidosis and likely sepsis. He had a past history of alcohol abuse with withdrawal seizures. An abdominal computed tomography scan showed thickened bowel loops but no obvious ischaemic changes, and a blood culture yielded a pure growth of Escherichia coli. At autopsy, the liver showed well-established micro-nodular cirrhosis with steatosis. The peritoneal cavity contained 200 mL of turbid yellow-brown fluid, and the caecum and ascending colon were unusually thickened. Microscopy of the caecum and ascending colon sh

Generally, a colon lesion is evaluated by endoscopy. In many cases, total colonoscopy is often difficult to perform due to postsurgical adhesion. Here, we described a case of a colon tumor that could not be recognized by colonoscopy and palpation under laparotomy. Nonetheless, this tumor could be observed by laparoscopy from the appendix root after appendectomy. Eventually, this tumor was locally resected. The patient was a 79-year-old male who had PET-CT examination to explore distant metastasis before the rectal cancer surgery. In this examination, the ascending-colon lesion was suspected as

AIM: Port placement in laparoscopic surgery has important ergonomic implications. A manipulation angle (MA) of 60° has been shown to maximize task efficiency. We calculated the MA used during various stages of both right hemicolectomy (RH) and high anterior resection (AR).
METHOD: We compared two methods of port placement for each operation. RH-PP1 included ports in the left iliac fossa and left upper quadrant. RH-PP2 included ports suprapubically and in the left iliac fossa. We calculated the MA of each of these methods in mobilizing both the caecum and hepatic flexure. AR-PP1 included ports

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Progesterone receptor, inflammation, neurotransmitter expression, and fibrosis are involved in slow-transit constipation. The aim of the present study was to examine whether patients with slow-transit constipation have an overexpression of progesterone receptor and serotonin, which may impair the fibrosis of muscularis propria in colorectal wall.
METHODS: High-resolution colon manometry was used to record the colorectal peristaltic contractions of the proximal ascending and sigmoid colon in patients. Protein samples prepared from frozen sigmoid colon tissue and the proxima
