Minute lesions of the rectum and sigmoid colon in patients with Crohn's disease.

Sigmoidoscopy with a spray of 0.1% indigocarmine was performed on 20 patients with Crohn's disease whose main lesions were located proximal to the transverse colon and on 10 age-matched healthy volunteers. Minute lesions such as apthoid lesions, areas of erythema, and small ulcers were found in 90% of patients with Crohn's disease and in 0% of healthy volunteers (p less than 0.001). Among the minute lesions, aphthoid lesions were found in the highest incidence (85%). It was difficult to determine the presence of aphthoid lesions without the spray of indigocarmine, which facilitated detection.

Percutaneous deflation and colopexy for volvulus of the sigmoid colon: a new approach.

This paper introduces percutaneous deflation of acute sigmoid volvulus as a simple, rapid and safe method which enables successful sigmoidoscopic decompression with avoidance of emergency surgery and its high mortality rate. The paper also introduced colopexy by banding as an effective and simple elective procedure which overcomes the limitations of mesenteropexy and resectional surgery. These procedures were done in eight patients without any mortality and with minimal morbidity (only one case developed wound infection.

Epidemiology of polyps in the rectum and sigmoid colon. Evaluation of nutritional factors.

Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between diet and colorectal cancer. Case/control studies, however, have been scarce, and studies based on interview with cancer patients who have symptoms from their cancer are inevitably prone to bias. An endoscopic population screening study for detection of colorectal adenomas enabled a double-blind registration of diet during 5 consecutive weekdays. Neither the participant nor the dietitian was informed of the findings at endoscopy. The estimation of 23 nutritional components was based on analysis of local commercial food and on the com

Effects of a meal on the motility of the sigmoid colon and rectum in healthy adults.

Motility in the sigmoid and rectal areas was studied before, during, and after a 900-cal meal in 11 healthy subjects. A Honeywell esophageal pressure transducer with three transducers was used for the recording. A 900-cal meal significantly stimulated colonic motility during eating. The frequency of contractions was responsible for this increase while the amplitude of the contractions remained the same. Colonic motility returned to fasting levels immediately after the meal. Recording periods of 30 min were not capable of distinguishing individual variations in colonic motility because of long

The outcome of staged management of complicated diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon.

In a retrospective study, 83 consecutive patients with indication for a staged treatment of complicated diverticular disease were reviewed. There was a considerable overall morbidity rate following construction of the colostomy, colonic resection, and colostomy closure. However, only 58% underwent a resection of the diseased segment, and even fewer (46%) obtained an eventual restoration of the colon continuity. This was primarily due to an unacceptable high mortality rate when patients with general peritonitis were managed by a proximal colostomy and drainage only. Subsequently, advanced age a

Myoelectrical activity of the sigmoid colon in patients with diverticular disease and the irritable colon syndrome suffering from diarrhoea.

It is often suggested that the irritable colon syndrome is a pre-diverticular condition and that patients with diverticular disease and predominant diarrhoea are in fact suffering from the irritable colon syndrome. In this study colonic motor function in diverticular disease (7 patients with predominant diarrhoea), in the irritable colon syndrome (7 patients with predominant diarrhoea) and in 8 normal subjects were compared. Patients with diarrhoea were matched for symptom score, stool weight and transit time. Slow wave electrical activity was measured by an intraluminal suction electrode and

Prognostic value of inferior mesenteric artery lymph node metastasis in cancer of the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum.

AIM: This study aimed to analyse the potential significance of metastasis to the inferior mesenteric artery lymph node (IMA-LN) in patients with malignancy of the left colon and rectum. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 890 patients collected prospectively who underwent radical resection of a primary tumour of the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum in our department from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2015 was performed. Patients were divided into an IMA-LN metastasis (IMA-LN (+)) group (n = 51) and a non IMA-LN metastasis (IMA-LN (-)) group (n = 839). A total of 801 pati…
