Can evolutionary and ecological dynamics operating at one level of the biological hierarchy affect the dynamics and structure at other levels? In social insects, strong hostility towards unrelated individuals can evolve as a kin-selected counter-adaptation to intraspecific social parasitism. This aggression in turn might cause intraspecific competition to predominate over interspecific competition, permitting coexistence with other social insect species. In other words, kin selection-a form of intra-population dynamics-might enhance the species richness of the community, a higher-level structu

Despite a high prevalence of pain and ongoing effort to understand and reduce pain, studies show that there remains a considerable unmet need for pain relief and management. In part, this may be due to patient's not adhering to treatment recommendations. Models such the health belief model, self-regulation theory, and the theory of planned behavior suggest two key factors in promoting adherence: (1) good health care provider-patient communication and (2) interventions that are tailored to individuals' reasons for non-adherence. Hence, communication skills that express a nonjudgmental approach,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Features of endemic scabies are specific in resource-poor and underprivileged communities, with implications for control measures on the community level. In this review, these special aspects are addressed.
RECENT FINDINGS: Scabies is endemic in many resource-poor communities, with a prevalence of 20% and higher. Transmission is influenced by social attitudes, migration, access to healthcare services, housing conditions, hygiene conditions, and crowding. Endemic scabies occurs with severe infestations, complications, and sequels, mainly in children. Sleep loss as a result o

Bone tissue is continuously renewed throughout adult life by a process called 'remodeling', which involves a dynamic interplay among bone cells including osteoclasts, osteoblasts and osteocytes. For example, a tight coupling between bone resorption and formation is essential for the homeostasis of the skeletal system. Studies on the coupling mechanism in physiological and pathological settings have revealed that osteoclasts or osteoclastic bone resorption promote bone formation through the production of diverse coupling factors. The classical coupling factors are the molecules that promote bon

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Interest in the microbiota-gut-brain axis is increasing apace and what was, not so long ago, a hypothetical relationship is emerging as a potentially critical factor in the regulation of intestinal and mental health. Studies are now addressing the neural circuitry and mechanisms underlying the influence of gut bacteria on the central nervous system and behavior.
RECENT FINDINGS: Gut bacteria influence development of the central nervous systems (CNS) and stress responses. In adult animals, the overall composition of the microbiota or exposure to specific bacterial strains ca

The current U.S. economic recession has resulted in a loss of income, housing, and healthcare coverage. Our major goal in this socioeconomic setting was to provide ophthalmic remote health screenings for urban soup kitchen and homeless populations in order to identify and refer undetected vision-threatening disease (VTD). We assessed visual acuity, blood pressure, pulse/oxygen saturation, body mass index, and intraocular pressure for 341 participants at soup kitchens as part of the homeless outreach program in Newark, NJ. History of diabetes, hypertension, and smoking, last ocular examination,

Here, we explore the established and potential roles for intradermal adipose tissue in communication with hair follicle biology. The hair follicle delves deep into the rich dermal macroenvironment as it grows to maturity where it is surrounded by large lipid-filled adipocytes. Intradermal adipocytes regenerate with faster kinetics than other adipose tissue depots and in parallel with the hair cycle, suggesting an interplay exists between hair follicle cells and adipocytes. While adipocytes have well-established roles in metabolism and energy storage, until recently, they were overlooked as nic

BACKGROUND: Personal narratives are conditional for victims of sexual abuse to overcome their trauma. Counsellors can help victims with intellectual disability to take an active position in conversations about sexuality and to co-construct a personal narrative.
METHOD: Using discourse and conversational analysis, we studied 4 conversations between a counsellor and a woman with autism and mild intellectual disability.
RESULTS: In conversation with a counsellor the participant was able to express her inner emotions and understanding about sexual issues and other sensitive topics. She was able

AIM: Establishing the prevalence of orofacial clefts in a community of institutionalized children and the correlations with sex, weight at birth, life environment, maternal age and children's associated diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on a batch of 37 living newly-born (15 boys and 22 girls) from 1987 to 1997, with orofacial clefts, institutionalized in placement centers from Iasi, who survived and were treated medical and surgical. The data were collected from the records found in the archives of these centers and were statistically processed with the EpiInfo 3.4.3. s

Diabetic foot problems are a common complication of diabetes. They can lead to much morbidity and some mortality, with foot disease the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputation in the developed world. Diabetic foot disease is a result of three main pathologies, which can occur singly or in combination: diabetic peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and infection. The consequences of these pathologies are ulceration, Charcot foot, painful diabetic neuropathy, gangrene and amputation. This article offers a podiatrist's view of the management of diabetic foot problems, fr

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a serious condition associated with significant morbidity and potential long-term mortality. Although the majority of patients with CAP are treated as outpatients, the greatest proportion of pneumonia-related mortality and healthcare expenditure occurs among the patients who are hospitalized. There has been considerable interest in determining risk factors and severity criteria assessments to assist with site-of-care decisions. For both inpatients and outpatients, the most common pathogens associated with CAP include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus i

BACKGROUND: The sensitization and exposure to fungal allergens have been reported to be associated with asthma. The aim of this study was to clarify the impact of sensitization to Schizophyllum commune (S. commune) on the severity and exacerbations of asthma.
METHODS: Ninety-two patients with asthma of various levels of severity [mild (n = 18), moderate (28), and severe (46)] and exacerbation severity [moderate (n = 43) and severe (6)] were retrospectively examined with regard to fungal sensitization such as specific IgE or intradermal skin reactions against S. commune and other common allerg

People with Parkinson's disease often have walking difficulty, and this is likely to be exacerbated while walking in places in the community, where people are likely to face greater and more varied challenges. This study aims to understand the facilitators and the barriers to walking in the community perceived by people with Parkinson's disease. This qualitative study involved 5 focus groups (n = 34) of people with Parkinson's disease and their partners residing in metropolitan and rural regions in Queensland, Australia. Results found that people with PD reported to use internal personal strat
