Feasibility and acceptability of technology-assisted problem management plus (TA-PM+) in community settings in Pakistan: a pre-post mixed-methods study.

Problem Management Plus (PM+) effectively reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress, demonstrating efficacy and cost-effectiveness in over 23 randomized controlled trials. However, real-world implementation through lay health workers often encounters significant challenges, particularly concerning intervention fidelity and feasible delivery. To address these challenges, Technology-assisted Problem Management Plus (TA-PM+), a digital adaptation of PM+, was co-developed. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of delivering TA-PM+ through governmen

Motivational determinants of frontline health extension workers in East Hararge Zone, Ethiopia: implications for primary health care systems in low-resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Health worker motivation affects service quality, retention, and the performance of primary health systems, especially in low-income settings. In Ethiopia, Health Extension Workers (HEWs) form the backbone of the rural health system, yet limited empirical evidence exists on the factors influencing their motivation across diverse regional contexts. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 314 HEWs from six Woreda (Districts) and one town administration in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, between July 1 and August 14, 2024. Motivation was operationally defined as the capacity of HEWs to i

Success or failure of critical steps in community case management of malaria with rapid diagnostic tests: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malaria still causes high morbidity and mortality around the world, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Community case management of malaria (CCMm) by community health workers (CHWs) is one of the strategies to combat the disease by increasing access to malaria treatment. Currently, the World Health Organization recommends to treat only confirmed malaria cases, rather than to give presumptive treatment. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the success or failure of critical steps in CCMm with rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). METHODS: The database…

Professions and intestinal infections in 15th-century Florence.

The aims behind this study are to verify a possible relationship between intestinal infectious diseases and certain professional activities carried out in 15th-century Florence by some categories of lesser labourers. Sources of the present study were the Libri dei Morti by the Florentine Ufficio della Grascia concerning the years 1424-25 and 1430 characterized by a plague epidemic. In this period, thanks to the particular social and economic circumstances of the times, the Libri dei Morti were enriched with additional notes about the illness that caused the deaths. The tables show an analysis

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies among waste collectors in Kuwait.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease with a global burden, particularly affecting pregnant women, neonates and immunosuppressed individuals. Latent toxoplasmosis has also been associated with neuropsychological disorders in immunocompetent individuals. In Kuwait, the unregulated presence of stray cats in residential areas may contribute to toxoplasmosis spread within the community. The targeted population of this study were waste cleaners, a potentially higher risk group in the community. The aim of the study was to estimate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among waste colle

Occupational Medicine and Total Worker Health®: from preventing health and safety risks in the workplace to promoting health for the total well-being of the worker.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of Public Health interventions for global social and economic development. Still, the community's well-being depends on each individual's health. In addition to pandemics, health conditions can be altered by chronic degenerative diseases, aging, disabilities, and work. Personal behaviors such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug use can also affect health and safety at work. In the last twenty years, we have witnessed rapid changes in the nature of work, workplace and workforce. I

Does training of Health Extension Workers reduce scabies load in district health facilities in rural Ethiopia?

INTRODUCTION: In 2017, Ethiopia included scabies management within the responsibility of health extension workers. In Kamba (the intervention district) workers were trained on scabies management. Whereas, in Arba Minch Zuria (the control district) there was no such training. This study assesses whether decentralization of scabies management to communities would reduce the load on health facilities and allow earlier scabies treatment access. METHODOLOGY: All individuals presenting with scabies before (January - June 2018) and after (August 2018-January 2019) the introduction of training (July

Complexities of short-term mobility for sex work and migration among sex workers: violence and sexual risks, barriers to care, and enhanced social and economic opportunities.

Despite research on the health and safety of mobile and migrant populations in the formal and informal sectors globally, limited information is available regarding the working conditions, health, and safety of sex workers who engage in short-term mobility and migration. The objective of this study was to longitudinally examine work environment, health, and safety experiences linked to short-term mobility/migration (i.e., worked or lived in another city, province, or country) among sex workers in Vancouver, Canada, over a 2.5-year study period (2010-2012). We examined longitudinal correlates of

Does the messenger make the difference? Perceived reliability of health information sources during the COVID-19 pandemic in multi-ethnic Malaysia.

The COVID-19 infodemic highlighted the need to identify the extent to which health information messengers were perceived as reliable by the public in supporting effective public health communication. A question that remains is whether there are differences across ethnic groups in information processing. This study examines the perceived reliability of three formal sources (healthcare workers, scientists, and non-governmental organisations [NGOs]) and four informal sources (religious leaders, community leaders, interpersonal sources, and influencers) among Malaysia's multi-ethnic population thr

Breakthrough COVID-19 Infection Among the General Community, Frontline Workers, and Healthcare Workers During the Second and Third Wave in North India: A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is among the most important public health tools for preventing the harm caused by communicable diseases. This was particularly true in the case of COVID-19 vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, no vaccine is 100% effective, and all carry the risk of breakthrough infection in vaccinated individuals. METHODOLOGY: This longitudinal observational study was done on COVID-19-vaccinated individuals at a vaccination site in a tertiary care hospital. The study participants were categorized into the general community, frontline workers, and healthcare workers and we

The global response and unmet actions for HIV and sex workers.

Female, male, and transgender sex workers continue to have disproportionately high burdens of HIV infection in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries in 2018. 4 years since our Lancet Series on HIV and sex work, our updated analysis of the global HIV burden among female sex workers shows that HIV prevalence is unacceptably high at 10·4% (95% CI 9·5-11·5) and is largely unchanged. Comprehensive epidemiological data on HIV and antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage are scarce, particularly among transgender women. Sustained coverage of treatment is markedly uneven and challenged by

Stakeholder perspectives on antenatal depression and the potential for psychological intervention in rural Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions for antenatal depression are an integral part of evidence-based care but need to be contextualised for respective sociocultural settings. In this study, we aimed to understand women and healthcare workers' (HCWs) perspectives of antenatal depression, their treatment preferences and potential acceptability and feasibility of psychological interventions in the rural Ethiopian context. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with women who had previously scored above the locally validated cut-off (five or more) on the Patient Health Questionnaire durin

Strengthening community-clinical linkages to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in rural NC: feasibility phase of the CHANGE study.

BACKGROUND: Community Health Workers (CHW) are recommended for delivery of interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease, but there is insufficient evidence to guide implementation of CHW interventions in rural, medically underserved areas. METHODS: Using a hybrid implementation-effectiveness design, we evaluated the implementation and effectiveness of an adapted, evidence-based cardiovascular disease risk reduction intervention among rural high-risk adults. CHWs at a community health center and local health department recruited, enrolled and counseled participants during 4 monthly home vis…
