Four-year course of quality of life and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have high disease burden. It is important to restore quality of life (QoL) in treatment, so that patients become able to live a fulfilling life. Little is known about the longitudinal course of QoL in patients with OCD, its association with remission from OCD, and about factors that contribute to an unfavourable course of QoL in remitting patients. METHODS: Study on the 4-year course of QoL of patients with chronic (n = 144), intermittent (n = 22), and remitting OCD (n = 73) using longitudinal data of the Netherlands Obsessive Compu

Demographic and psychiatric correlates of compulsive sexual behaviors in gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) and compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) may commonly co-occur. Yet, the psychiatric correlates of these co-occurring disorders are an untapped area of empirical scrutiny, limiting our understanding of appropriate treatment modalities for this dual-diagnosed population. This study examined the demographic and clinical correlates of CSB in a sample of treatment-seeking individuals with GD (N = 368) in São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Psychiatrists and psychologists conducted semi-structured clinical interviews to identify rates of CSB and other comorbid psych

Orthorexia nervosa: A behavioral complex or a psychological condition?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Numerous studies have provided evidence for orthorexia nervosa (ON), an eating pattern characterized by an almost manic obsession for and fixation on healthy eating, to be of epidemiological relevance. However, there is scientific debate on whether it is merely a behavioral or lifestyle phenomenon as compared to a mental disorder. Aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore whether ON is of epidemiological and clinical relevance, and whether ON can be distinguished from other mental health disorders and healthy lifestyle features. METHODS: An online survey including

Anger, personality traits and psychopathological symptoms in subjects exposed to negative interpersonal actions in workplaces: an observational study in a large sample attending a Center for Occupational Stress.

OBJECTIVE: The association between adverse working conditions and mental disorders is well established. In addition to psychopathological symptoms, this study aimed at investigating anger and personality traits in a clinical sample of subjects referring negative interpersonal experiences in workplaces. METHODS: 1676 workers attending a Centre for Occupational Stress in Milan (from 2014 to 2016) were administered an assessment protocol including SCL-90 for general psychopathology, STAXI for anger intensity and expression, and MMPI-2 for personality traits. A qualitative checklist was used to c

Prevalence and correlates of aggressive behavior in psychiatric inpatient populations.

Aggressive behavior in patients with psychiatric disorders is attracting increasing research interest. One reason for this is that psychiatric patients are generally considered more likely to be aggressive, which raises a related question of whether diagnoses of psychiatric disorders predict the prevalence of aggressive behavior. Predicting aggression in psychiatric wards is crucial, because aggressive behavior not only endangers the safety of both patients and staff, but it also extends the hospitalization times. Predictions of aggressive behavior also need careful attention to ensure effecti

Visualisation and bibliometric analysis of worldwide research trend of stress among seafarer: an extensive publication analysis.

Stress is the most predominant and worldwide psychological human condition that undoubtedly impedes the state of mind of the individuals. During the last few years, a tremendous change and growth in the global publishing trend for human stress have been observed. Like other professionals (doctors, bankers, teachers, and businessmen), the mariners or seafarers are also being the most common victims of this human psychological disorder (stress) these days. The keywords "seafarer" and "stress" have been exposed to mine the research trend of the articles exploring the stress among the seafarers. F

Psychopathology in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence.

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder appear to experience high levels of psychological distress, yet little is known about the prevalence of psychological disorders in this population. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the proportion of these parents who experience clinically significant psychopathology. Articles reporting proportions of psychological disorders in a sample of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder were located. The initial search returned 25,988 articles. Thirty-one studies with a total sample of 9208 parents were inclu

Nonfunctional Redundant Acts Characterize OCD, Even in OCD-Unrelated Tasks: A Demonstration in Questionnaire Completion.

BACKGROUND: Ethological methods used to analyze human obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) rituals demonstrated excess of unnecessary repetitions as well as irrelevant, idiosyncratic acts (additions) compared to normal activity. A question that still remains is whether these well-known repetitions and additions are manifested in behaviors unrelated to the OCD rituals. Our objectives were to: (1) assess whether OCD-related repetitions and additions as found in previous studies also affect the patients' activity of filling out questionnaires and (2) evaluate the specificity of these behaviors to

Drawing the Line Between Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia.

The schizo-obsessive spectrum has been a central focus of interest and research within the scientific community in mental health. The increased comorbidity of schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) appears to be considerably higher than previously expected, with more recent studies suggesting growing prevalence rates. Despite this phenomenon, OCS are not considered primary manifestations of schizophrenia and are therefore not usually explored in these patients. The concept of schizo-obsessiveness mostly emerged in the 1990s, progressing int

Are personality disorders in bipolar patients more frequent in the US than Europe?

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar patients in the United States (US) compared to those from the Netherlands and Germany (here abbrev. as "Europe") have more Axis I comorbidities and more poor prognosis factors such as early onset and psychosocial adversity in childhood. We wished to examine whether these differences also extended to Axis II personality disorders (PDs). METHODS: 793 outpatients with bipolar disorder diagnosed by SCID gave informed consent for participating in a prospective longitudinal follow up study with clinician ratings at each visit. They completed detailed patient questionnaires and a

[Hypochondriasis and somatisation in elderly].

Anxiety or masked depression are often associated with somatisation in elderly. Hypochondriasis is an excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness. The DSM-IV defines it as a somatoform disorder. It affects about 3% of the population but has a heavy health care cost. Depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder generalized anxiety and somatization disorder are common in elderly and are the most common accompanying conditions in people with hypochondriasis. Old persons' unexplained medical symptoms in generalized anxiety and their relationship to the somatoform disorders are pre

Changes in the classification of personality disorders: Comparing the DSM-5 Section II personality disorder model to the alternative model for personality disorders using structured clinical interviews.

The current study examined the continuity of personality disorder (PD) diagnoses from Section II to Section III (alternative model for personality disorders [AMPD]) when using structured interviews. We investigated the continuity both in terms of stability of prevalence rates and in terms of convergent validity. A clinical sample of 189 participants were concurrently administered both Section II PD and AMPD interviews for diagnosing PD by 2 independent interviewers. Stability of prevalence between the models for specific PD diagnoses was generally supported. A higher prevalence of trait-specif

Clinical experience in the treatment of obsessional states (1).

This paper describes the treatment of thirty-three patients who were suffering with obsessional symptoms and who were given the drug clomipramine (Anafranil, Geigy Pharmaceuticals). The symptoms were classified into phobic ruminations, non-phobic ruminations and rituals as well as into the less familiar group of normal and bizarre obsessions. Progress was assessed using the Shapiro card method and a brief description of this method is given. The results show that clomipramine possesses a specific anti-obsessional quality and that the use of this preparation is an effective treatment for obsess

Vomiting as a manifestation of borderline personality disorder in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder often are found and treated in psychiatric settings following episodes of self-mutilation, such as wrist-slashing. Family physicians care for many patients with borderline personality disorder, but in primary care settings wrist-slashing or other physical mutilation is a less common presenting problem. Frequently these patients complain of such symptoms as nausea and vomiting that do not so obviously suggest psychopathology. METHODS: Three primary care patients with borderline personality disorder in whom episodic vomiting was the chie

Diogenes Syndrome: Identification and Distinction from Hoarding Disorder.

"Severe domestic squalor" or Diogenes syndrome is characterised by extreme self-neglect of environment, health, and hygiene, excessive hoarding, squalor, social withdrawal, and a distinct lack of concern or shame regarding one's living condition. This report presents a case of a 51-year-old male admitted to the hospital psychiatric ward following the police removing him from his home. Police officers attended the man's home following the alarm being raised by his stepfather that he had not been seen or heard from in 3 weeks. His home was covered in several feet of rubbish, rotting food, and de

A personal 35 year perspective on Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: prevalence, phenomenology, comorbidities, and coexistent psychopathologies.

This Series is a personal narrative of my experience with patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and covers its definition and history since the first description in 1825. Controversy entered the prevalence debate early. Although originally considered very rare, in the 1980s, Tourette's syndrome was reported to be common. However, Tourette's syndrome has been shown to occur at a prevalence of about 0·85% to 1%. Tourette's syndrome is more common in the male population, more prominent during childhood, and usually improves, but does not disappear with age. Tourette's syndrome is considere
