BACKGROUND: Simultaneous condom and hormonal contraception usage ('dual method use') maximises protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI), although there is concern that promotion of this strategy could result in diminished condom use and inadvertently increase STI risk. In this study, we (1) assessed how the use of dual methods, versus condoms alone, related to STI and consistency of condom use and (2) described the correlates of dual use.
METHODS: A sample of 1450 young people aged 12-25 years were surveyed and screened for chlamydia and gonorrhoea at non-clinical…

INTRODUCTION: Monogamous female sexually transmitted infection (STI) patients are at high risk of recurrent STI, but there is no study investigating their risk behaviors.
AIM: We investigated the prevalence of male condom use and associated factors among monogamous STI female patients.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Independent variables included socio-demographic characteristics, STI history, nature of relationship, and cognitions (Health Belief Model). Dependent variables included the use of male condoms in the past two months and intention to use male condoms consistently in the future 6 months.

Young men who have sex with men (MSM) are at risk for HIV infection. We investigated inconsistent condom use among 827 sexually active young MSM (15-24 years), enrolled using venue-day-time sampling in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, Thailand. Data was collected using palmtop computer-assisted self-interviewing. Of participants, 33.1% were regular MSM, 37.7% were male sex workers (MSWs) and 29.1% were transgenders (TGs). Of MSM, 46.7%, of MSWs, 34.9% and of TGs, 52.3% reported recent inconsistent condom use. In multivariate analysis, receptive anal intercourse (MSM, MSWs), receptive and insert

BACKGROUND: Multilevel analytical techniques are being applied in condom use research to ensure the validity of investigation on environmental/structural influences and clustered data from venue-based sampling. The literature contains reports of consistent associations between perceived gatekeeper support and condom use among entertainment establishment-based female sex workers (FSWs) in Guangxi, China. However, the clustering inherent in the data (FSWs being clustered within establishment) has not been accounted in most of the analyses. We used multilevel analyses to examine perceived feature

Youths, aged 15-24 years, comprise a large fragment of the total population in Thailand, and unsafe sexual behaviours are increasing, nowadays, among young people. The study was conducted to explore the characteristics of youths and other conducive, facilitating and reinforcing factors associated with risk perception of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the study population. Data employed in this study were derived from the site of the Kanchanaburi Demographic Surveillance System of Thailand 2004 using a stratified systemic design. The study population was mainly young current condo

OBJECTIVES: We examined the efficacy of a brief behavioral intervention to promote condom use among female sex workers in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
METHODS: We randomized 924 female sex workers 18 years or older without known HIV infection living in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez who had recently had unprotected sex with clients to a 30-minute behavioral intervention or a didactic control condition. At baseline and 6 months, women underwent interviews and testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.
RESULTS: We observed a 40% decline in cumulative sexually transmitted illness inc

Condom use has increased among Brazilian youth, although condoms are not used in all sexual relations; in addition, their use varies over the course of an individual's affective and sexual history. This study focused on the prevalence and factors associated with condom use during sexual initiation and in the most recent sexual relations in young men and women (18-24 years of age). The data are from the GRAVAD Research Project, a cross-sectional study with a stratified probabilistic sample using household interviews in three Brazilian State capitals. The analysis used multinomial logistic regre…

Appropriate and consistent use of condom remains an effective approach to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) intervention. We analyzed the baseline data gathered for a situationally based HIV/AIDS intervention to assess the potential predictors of condom use among the Uniformed Services Personnel in Nigeria. Using condom purchase as a proxy for intention to use condom, we examined the distribution of the demographic and lifestyle characteristics, knowledge of HIV transmission mode, and knowledge of how to correctly use a condom. A univariable logistic

This study used a model derived from social-information processing theory to investigate how men with a history of domestic violence would react to a condom request. The study used path analysis to examine men's attributional and evaluative responses as potential predictors of coercion and condom use compliance. Men responded to a hypothetical situation in which their main partner requested that they use a condom. Among 100 county jail inmates, men who used severe forms of domestic violence differed from moderately violent and nonviolent men in their tendency to react negatively to condom requ

Reducing the number of sex partners and using condoms are the major means for individuals to protect themselves from STDs and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. To identify predictors of having only one sex partner in the last year and to assess knowledge and use of condoms among women of reproductive age in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, we interviewed 2285 women at 3 representative family planning clinics between February 1991 and June 1992. After interview, blood and genital specimens were collected for laboratory diagnosis of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Although knowledge of sex…

We examined the prevalence and correlates of condom use in a community-based sample of unmarried heterosexual and gay/bisexual Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics (aged 20 to 44 years) in San Francisco (n = 1229). Only 9% of heterosexual males reported always using condoms, and fewer of those with multiple sexual partners (6%) reported always using condoms compared with those in monogamous relationships (12%). Much higher proportions of gay/bisexual men reported always using condoms (48%). Racial differences in condom use were observed only among women. Sexual communication and the sexual enjoyment …

Condom negotiation among adolescents is a critical component of sexual and reproductive health, yet significant gaps persist between knowledge and behaviour. Traditional interventions focus on awareness and place less emphasis on how environmental pressures and internal emotional factors interact to disrupt negotiation. This qualitative study explores the behavioural determinants of condom negotiation among adolescent mothers, specifically examining how capabilities, opportunities, and motivations influence sexual health choices within the COM-B framework. Data collection focused on assessing

Women who have experienced rape are more likely to engage in heavy alcohol use and condom nonuse. In this secondary analysis, we examined whether rape history moderated the effects of Retraining Alcohol and Condom Tendencies, a brief integrated approach bias modification intervention for reducing alcohol use and increasing condom use. Sixty women between 18 and 24 (M = 19.88, SD = 1.50) reporting heavy alcohol use and unprotected sex with casual partners were randomly assigned to a training condition (n = 31; 42% experienced rape) or a sham-control condition (n = 29; 34% experienced rape). Immigrants and visible minority populations are at higher risk of HIV infection in Canada. To understand the contributory role of these identities on HIV infection, our study examined how the intersection of racial identity and immigration status is associated with patterns of condom use, testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and having concurrent sexual partners among females and males in Canada. We used a nationally representative dataset from the 2015-2016 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) and applied multivariate modified Poisson regression analysis. Our f
