A comparison of DNA amplification, isolation and serology for the detection of Chlamydia psittaci infection in cats.

Chlamydia psittaci is a significant cause of conjunctivitis in cats, but can be difficult to diagnose owing to the small number of organisms in conjunctival swabs. In the United Kingdom laboratory diagnosis is based on three techniques: isolation of the infectious organism, amplification of chlamydial DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or the detection of anti-chlamydial antibodies by immunofluorescence assay. To determine the most sensitive method these techniques were compared in the field. The PCR based on previously published protocols was less sensitive than isolation, but by modi

Disseminated Intra-abdominal Actinomycosis Mimicking Colorectal Carcinoma With Diffuse Intra-abdominal Carcinomatosis: A Case Report.

Actinomycosis is a rare opportunistic bacterial infection. It most commonly affects the cervicofacial area and is less common in the gastrointestinal area. Because of the ambiguous clinical pictures, there is a low preoperative diagnosis rate and a high rate of misdiagnoses. In this case report, we have an unusual presentation of disseminated abdominal actinomycosis in a diabetic male patient with no previous history of surgery or trauma. He presented with abdominal pain for two years. Abdominal imaging showed rectal wall thickening with adhesion and attachment to the bladder, and small bowel

Standardization of an enzyme immunoassay for human antibody to Haemophilus ducreyi.

We standardized a serologic enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for human immunoglobulin G and M antibodies against Haemophilus ducreyi. We evaluated the performance of this test with respect to the time from acute chancroid and coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Antibody to a crude, soluble bacterial antigen of one H. ducreyi strain was detected in a panel of serum samples from clinically and microbiologically confirmed cases of chancroid and from controls. Test interpretation was standardized for optimal sensitivity and specificity. Performance of the EIA was enhanced in the period of

Sunlight-driven biogas biodesulfurization in an alkaline bioscrubber at low gas residence time coupled to an open photobioreactor.

This study addresses the application of an alkaline bacteria-microalgal process for biogas desulfurization. The bacterial consortium, composed of the genus Thioalkalivibrio, in conjunction with the microalgae Picochlorum sp. and Scenedesmus sp., fosters hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal from biogas and promotes its conversion to sulfate. The performance of a bioscrubber (BS) coupled with a high-rate algal pond (HRAP) exposed to outdoor conditions for the removal of various H2S loads from synthetic biogas was analyzed. During diurnal period, the oxygen produced by the microalgae in the HRAP, in co

Evaluating the frequency of bacterial co-infections in children recruited into a malaria pathogenesis study in The Gambia, West Africa using molecular methods.

Systemic bacteraemia has been reported in children with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Sub Saharan Africa, making the identification or exclusion of concurrent infections a prerequisite for adequate treatment and studies of the immune responses to particular infections. Given the overlap in clinical signs in humans between malaria and, for example, pneumonia, the true cause of severe illness is sometimes difficult to establish. Traditional microbiological culture methods employed to detect systemic bacteraemia are often time consuming and have modest sensitivity. Therefore, molecular

Point-of-Care Testing by Multiplex-PCR in Different Compartments in Suspected Lower Respiratory Tract Infection After Lung Transplantation-Results of a Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality following lung transplantation (LTx). This study evaluated a point-of-care multiplex-PCR testing system (POCTmPCR) for pathogen detection in various respiratory samples from LTx recipients. METHODS: In a prospective single-center study, LTx recipients with RTI undergoing bronchoscopy were enrolled. Samples from bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), sputum, and nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) were analyzed by POCTmPCR in conjunction with conventional diagnostics. The primary study endpoint was the concordance of

Phytochemical-induced reduction of pulmonary inflammation during Klebsiella pneumoniae lung infection in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from the herb Curcuma longa, has number of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-carcinogenic activities. Its anti-inflammatory property was here studied alone and in combination with clarithromycin in a mouse model of acute inflammation. METHODOLOGY: A total of 80 mice divided into four groups were used. Mice receiving curcumin and/or clarithromycin were fed orally with curcumin (150 mg/kg/day) for 15 days prior to infection, whereas clarithromycin was administered orally (30 mg/kg/day) 12 hours post infection. Simultaneously, the

Vaccination with proteus toxic agglutinin, a hemolysin-independent cytotoxin in vivo, protects against Proteus mirabilis urinary tract infection.

Complicated urinary tract infections (UTI) caused by Proteus mirabilis are associated with severe pathology in the bladder and kidney. To investigate the roles of two established cytotoxins, the HpmA hemolysin, a secreted cytotoxin, and proteus toxic agglutinin (Pta), a surface-associated cytotoxin, mutant analysis was used in conjunction with a mouse model of ascending UTI. Inactivation of pta, but not inactivation of hpmA, resulted in significant decreases in the bacterial loads of the mutant in kidneys (P < 0.01) and spleens (P < 0.05) compared to the bacterial loads of the wild type; the 5

Sequencing and analysis of a 63 kb bacterial artificial chromosome insert from the Wolbachia endosymbiont of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi.

Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria are widespread in filarial nematodes and are directly involved in the immune response of the host. In addition, antibiotics which disrupt Wolbachia interfere with filarial nematode development thus, Wolbachia provide an excellent target for control of filariasis. A 63.1 kb bacterial artificial chromosome insert, from the Wolbachia endosymbiont of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi, has been sequenced using the New England Biolabs Inc. Genome Priming System() transposition kit in conjunction with primer walking methods. The bacterial artificial chromosome

Nasopharyngeal 13-virus PCR panel for the rapid diagnosis of adenovirus corneal ulcer in an infant: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Infantile corneal ulcer is a sight-threatening emergency, with bacterial and traumatic causes being common. Adenovirus (ADV), especially species D, is an under-recognized pathogen in infants. Corneal scraping is often infeasible in this age group, necessitating alternative diagnostic approaches. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 5-month-old full-term twin presented with bilateral photophobia, conjunctival redness, and mucopurulent discharge lasting 10 days. Hand-held slit-lamp examination revealed pseudomembranous conjunctivitis and bilateral shield corneal ulcers measuring 6.7 mm. DIAGNOSES: C

Vitamin A Deficiency, COVID-19, and Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis (Black Fungus): An Analytical Perspective.

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious opportunistic fungal disease characterized by rhino-orbito-cerebral and pulmonary involvement. It is mainly seen in people with secondary immunosuppression, isolated vitamin A deficiency, measles, and AIDS patients. It showed a rise during the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in the spring of 2021 in India, especially in diabetic COVID-19 patients. Vitamin A deficiency is known to cause nutritional immunodeficiency and hence leading the way to increased opportunistic fungal, bacterial, and viral infections. In the eye, it causes keratitis, night blindness

Reactive arthritis.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is an immune-mediated seronegative arthritis that belongs to the group of spondyloarthropathies and develops after a gastrointestinal or genitourinary system infection. The condition is considered to be characterized by a triad of symptoms (conjunctivitis, arthritis and urethritis) although a constellation of other manifestations may also be present. ReA is characterized by psoriasiform dermatological manifestations that may resemble those of pustular psoriasis and, similar to guttate psoriasis, is a post-infectious entity. Also, the articular manifestations of the dis

[Priorix Tetra: a new combined vaccine against measles, rubella, mumps and varicella].

Varicella is an infectious disease caused by a virus of the herpes virus family (VZV) affecting predominantly the pediatric age. Varicella is considered a mild disease, but in some cases, mainly in immunocompromised subjects, it can evolve towards complicated cases, even fatal. In immunocompetent subjects, however, serious complications can also arise, such as cutaneous bacterial superinfections, pneumonia, conjunctivitis or corneal infections and central nervous system (CNS) complications. The rate of hospitalization, even in developed countries, is high. Due to the epidemiological relevance

[Case of relapsing polychondritis followed by cognitive impairment].

A 64-year-old man developed cognitive impairment. A neurological examination showed hypereactive tendon reflex. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination showed a mild increase in both the number of mononuclear cells (14 cells/mm3) and the protein level (45 mg/dl). An electroencephalogram showed diffuse slow wave activity. Brain MR images revealed multifocal lesions in the limbic area and white matter regions. He was suspected to have autoimmune encephalitis and his symptoms improved after treated with methylprednisolone (1 g/day for 3 days). Despite this treatment, his mental disorders later re

The PCR assessed prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in aborted tissues.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (ChT) are the most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infections worldwide. ChT is a cause of cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis, tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Perinatal infections with ChT have been associated with premature rupture of membranes, stillbirth, preterm delivery, and in newborns with conjunctivitis and pneumonia. There are controversial data referring to the association between colonisation by ChT and the risk of spontaneous abortion. Only few studies investigated the prevalence of ChT antigens in aborted

[Massive intraocular invasion of conjunctiva by squamous cell carcinoma--a case report].

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva is a mostly solitary growing tumor located at the limbus region, which seldom invades the eye. We present an unusual case of conjunctival carcinoma with marked intraocular involvement, which appeared primarily as a chronic inflammation with corneal ulcer. CASE REPORT: A 89-year-old female patient was referred to our institution with a suspected ulcus rodens of the cornea. Since one year a refractory conjunctivitis persisted despite of different local treatment. At first presentation, a marked bacterial keratoconjunctivitis with circular n
