Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine abuse in substance-abusing adolescents.

The prevalence of methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine misuse and abuse was examined in 450 adolescents referred for substance abuse treatment. Twenty three percent reported nonmedical use of these substances and six percent were diagnosed as methylphenidate or dextroamphetamine abusers. Abuse was more common in individuals who were out of school and had an eating disorder. Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine abuse appears to be much less common than abuse of most other substances. It does occur, however, and parents and schools need to exert greater control over the dispensing of these med

Neuromodulators and transmitters in respiratory control.

The respiratory control system is influenced by classical neurotransmitters and by neuromodulators. The neuromodulators are neuroactive substances that can be secreted at a distance from their receptors and must diffuse to their site of action. Their function can be nonsynaptic and long lasting, and their effect can be direct or indirect via other neuroactive substances. In the central nervous system, a variable degree of mismatch exists between sites of neuromodulator secretion and reception. The assignment of a natural role for a neuromodulator in respiratory control is strengthened by evide

Diuretic activity of the aqueous extracts of Carum carvi and Tanacetum vulgare in normal rats.

In the Moroccan traditional medicine, the ripe fruits of Carum carvi L. (Apiaceae) and the leaves of Tanacetum vulgare L. (Asteraceae/Compositae), two widely available plant materials, are used as diuretics. Since, the diuretic activity of these substances has not been investigated in scientifically controlled studies, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the diuretic potential of aqueous extracts of Carum carvi fruit (caraway) and the leaves of Tanacetum vulgare (tansy) in normal rats after acute and sub-chronic oral administration. Water extracts of Carum carvi and Tanacetum vulgare

Addiction concepts and international control.

Addiction concepts became established in the wake of the great expansion of the availability of psychoactive substances through the globalization of the age of European empires and the industrial revolution. Addiction was a way of understanding (and locating either in the substance or in individual deficiencies) the contradictions between ready availability and the demands for sobriety imposed by the new means of production and transportation. Originally applied to alcohol, addiction concepts were soon applied to other substances. The elusive place of addiction concepts in current internationa

Prescription drug monitoring programs in community pharmacy: An exploration of pharmacist time requirements and labor cost.

OBJECTIVE: To (1) measure the average time community pharmacists require to query prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) reports, and (2) estimate pharmacist labor costs associated with PDMP use. DESIGN: This exploratory project consisted of an observational time study followed by analysis of existing PDMP data sets. Data collected included time spent by pharmacists in Final Verification of controlled substance prescriptions (CSPs), and whether or not they queried the PDMP. Zip code level PDMP query rates and prescription volume of opioid and benzodiazepines (O&BZD) were linked to time-s

Adolescent Sexual Minority Girls Are at Elevated Risk for Use of Multiple Substances.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority youth, especially girls, are at risk for alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use when these substances are examined individually. However, little is known about concurrent use of these substances (i.e., three-substance use) in relation to sexual orientation. OBJECTIVES: The present study compared profiles of past year alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use between SMGs and heterosexual girls. In addition, because internalizing and externalizing symptoms are associated with substance use, we examined whether sexual orientation was associated with substance use profile

Effectiveness of Nurse-led Brief Intervention to Reduce the Risky Use of Alcohol and Tobacco Use Among Older Adults: Results of a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial from India.

BACKGROUND: India has witnessed a gradual increase in substance use among the elderly, driven by the country's aging population and evolving demographic trends. There remains a lack of scientific foundation regarding the efficacy of brief intervention among older adults in the context of low- and middle-income countries. The current study explored the effectiveness of nurse-led brief intervention to reduce risky substance use patterns among the elderly in the Indian context. METHODS: The present study is a pilot randomized trial with assessments conducted before and after the intervention at

The Effectiveness of Group Assertiveness Training on Happiness in Rural Adolescent Females With Substance Abusing Parents.

BACKGROUND: Parental substance abuse confronts children with a variety of psychological, social, and behavioral problems. Children of substance abusing parents show higher levels of psychiatric disorders including anxiety and depression and exert lower levels of communication skills. Weak social skills in this group of adolescents put them at a higher risk for substance abuse. Many studies showed school based interventions such as life skill training can effective on future substance abusing in these high risk adolescences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants consisted of 57 middles schoo

Role of nociceptors/neuropeptides in the pathogenesis of visceral hypersensitivity of nonerosive reflux disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Esophageal visceral hypersensitivity has been proposed to be a pathogenesis of heartburn in nonerosive reflux disease (NERD), but its further mechanisms are unclear. Recently, it has been suggested that nociceptors and neuropeptides control sensory and pain mechanisms. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to estimate expression of acid-sensitive nociceptors such as transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and acid-sensing ion channel 3, protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2), neuropeptides such as substance P and calcitonin-gene-related peptide, and thei

Digoxin-like immunoreactive substances in chronic liver disease.

Digoxin-like immunoreactive substances, which cross-react with digoxin antibody, have been found to have natriuretic effect and Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitory effect. The role of digoxin-like immunoreactive substances in chronic liver disease was studied by radioimmunoassay in 63 serum and 60 urine samples from 58 patients with chronic liver disease and compared with 16 controls. Although the mean serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substances level of compensated chronic liver disease patients (0.06 +/- 0.05 ng per ml, p less than 0.01) was higher than that of controls (0.02 +/- 0.03 ng per ml), only

Changes of substance P and somatostatin contents in the gastrointestinal tract of streptozotocin diabetic rats.

Substance P and somatostatin contents were measured in the gastrointestinal tract of streptozotocin diabetic rats, 1 month after streptozotocin administration (60 mg/kg), and of age-matched controls with radioimmunoassay. Substance P and somatostatin contents were statistically increased in the extrafundus of the diabetic stomach, but not in the diabetic fundus. Substance P was significantly decreased in the diabetic ileum and caecum. Similarly, somatostatin was decreased in the diabetic caecum. Contrarily, slight increase of somatostatin contents in the diabetic duodenum, jejunum and proximal

Refined food addiction: a classic substance use disorder.

Overeating in industrial societies is a significant problem, linked to an increasing incidence of overweight and obesity, and the resultant adverse health consequences. We advance the hypothesis that a possible explanation for overeating is that processed foods with high concentrations of sugar and other refined sweeteners, refined carbohydrates, fat, salt, and caffeine are addictive substances. Therefore, many people lose control over their ability to regulate their consumption of such foods. The loss of control over these foods could account for the global epidemic of obesity and other metab

Early-life trauma, negative and positive life events, compulsive sexual behavior disorder and risky sexual action tendencies among young women with substance use disorder.

Although significant advances have been made in the field to date, gender-based issues for women remain a neglected area in much of substance abuse research. In the current study we examined two gaps in the literature: the co-occurrence of compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and risky sexual action tendencies among women with substance use disorders (SUDs), and their shared antecedents in the form of early life adversity and negative life events. The sample comprised 132 women of whom 62 had substance use disorder (drug and alcohol) and 70 were healthy controls. Each participant complet

Mother-Child Interaction and Early Language Skills in Children Born to Mothers with Substance Abuse and Psychiatric Problems.

This prospective, longitudinal study with data collected at four time points investigated how maternal psychiatric symptoms, substance abuse and maternal intrusiveness in interaction were related to early child language skills. Three groups of mothers were recruited during pregnancy: One from residential treatment institutions for substance abuse (n = 18), one from psychiatric outpatient treatment (n = 22) and one from well-baby clinics (n = 30). Maternal substance abuse and anti-social and borderline personality traits were assessed during pregnancy, postpartum depression at 3 months, materna

The impact of substance use on brain structure in people at high risk of developing schizophrenia.

Ventricular enlargement and reduced prefrontal volume are consistent findings in schizophrenia. Both are present in first episode subjects and may be detectable before the onset of clinical disorder. Substance misuse is more common in people with schizophrenia and is associated with similar brain abnormalities. We employ a prospective cohort study with nested case control comparison design to investigate the association between substance misuse, brain abnormality, and subsequent schizophrenia. Substance misuse history, imaging data, and clinical information were collected on 147 subjects at hi

Alcohol and illicit substances associated with fatal crashes in Queensland: An examination of the 2011 to 2015 Coroner's findings.

PROBLEM: The problem of impaired driving is well documented in the literature but is heavily dependent upon self-report studies and/or databases that do not include in-depth information about the contributing origins of fatalities. AIM: This study aimed to conduct an in-depth analysis of Coroner's findings for all fatally injured drivers in the state of Queensland in order to explore the prevalence of alcohol and different types of illicit substances (including drug combinations) in fatal crash reports. METHOD: A total of 701 Coroner's reports related to drivers or controllers of vehicles in

Does Aripiprazole Increase Compulsive Urges to Use Substances? Case Reports and Literature Review.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Aripiprazole is commonly used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder and is preferred because of its relatively favorable side-effect profile. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration released a warning regarding the risk of new impulse control problems with aripiprazole, including urges to gamble, binge eat, shop, and engage in sexual intercourse. These problems are rare but may cause significant harm if not recognized in time. METHODS: This report presents 2 clinical cases to hypothesize that aripiprazole may increase urges and compulsiv
