Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) is an X-linked recessive lysosomal storage metabolic disorder caused by pathogenic mutations in the iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS) gene. Herein, we report the case of a 2-year-old male patient diagnosed with concurrent Evans syndrome (ES) and MPS II, who presented with severe anemia, thrombocytopenia, recurrent respiratory tract infections, and typical clinical manifestations of MPS II. Laboratory examinations showed decreased hemoglobin (Hb) and platelet (PLT) counts, a positive direct Coombs test, presence of anti-platelet antibodies, elevated urinary glyc…

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is rare but potentially life-threatening complication of leptospirosis, a zoonotic infection caused by the Leptospira species. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia occurs when the immune system targets red blood cells, resulting in hemolysis and anemia. The relationship between leptospirosis and AIHA is uncommon and often under-recognized, which can delay diagnosis and management. This case highlights the importance of considering hematologic complications in leptospirosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male presented with low-grade fever, productive

In B-cell malignancies, there is a periodic presence of monoclonal gammopathies. In a notable multitude of cases with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a cluster of antigen-inciting B-cells sometimes shows the presence of monoclonal gammopathy and autoimmune hemolysis simultaneously. The detection of monoclonal proteins or light chains in urine and/or serum is significantly increased in cases of CLL and can be identified using highly sensitive laboratory methods, such as serum protein electrophoresis. Hemolysis in these patients can be detected by the direct Coombs test (DCT). Several scient…

Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) is an acquired disorder in which antibodies are produced against self-erythrocyte antigens. We distinguish those produced by cold antibodies (IgM), which may be associated with lymphoproliferative syndromes, infectious diseases, other autoimmune phenomena, as well as drugs or solid tumours. We report a case of AIHA due to cold antibodies as a paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) in a patient with metastatic renal carcinoma. A 67-year-old man with newly diagnosed stage IV renal carcinoma with hepatic, bone, and lymph node involvement was consulted for abdominal pai

An 80-year-old man was referred to our department because of lymphocytosis. His white cell count was 17.1 × 10(3)/μL, with 64% prolymphocytes. He did not exhibit splenomegaly or lymphadenopathy. Prolymphocytes were CD5(+), CD10(-), CD19(+), CD20(+), CD21(+weak), CD22(+), CD23(-), and HLA-DR(+), and expressed μδ/λ cell-surface immunoglobulins. G-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization using c-MYC and immunoglobulin heavy-chain (IgH) gene probe revealed that leukemia cells carried the t(8;14)(q24;q32)/c-MYC-IgH fusion gene, and breakage and reunion occurred within the non-coding region of

Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS), also referred to as allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS), is a noninvasive, eosinophilic form of recurrent chronic allergic hypertrophic rhinosinusitis. AFS has distinct clinical, histopathological, and prognostic findings that differentiate it from other forms of sinusitis. The core pathogenesis and optimum treatment strategies remain debated. Concerns surround the use of immunotherapy for AFS because allergen-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) induced by immunotherapy could theoretically incite a Gell and Coombs type III (complex mediated) reaction. Type I hype

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between autoimmune thrombocytopenia with other autoimmune disorders, to show if they are different autoimmune diseases or one disease with different presentations at the same time, and to study the effect of treatment on platelet count in different thyroid condition.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we included 141 patients with thrombocytopenic purpura. The result of thyroid function test, thyroid autoantibodies, Coombs' reactivity, anti-nuclear antibody, and double-stranded DNA were analyzed. This study was conducted in the Clinical Hematology Dep

Maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility is common but less commonly results in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). HDFN is associated with greater peak bilirubin, at an earlier age, and for longer duration than other causes of hyperbilirubinemia. It poses a substantial risk for kernicterus and accounts for the majority of exchange transfusions for hyperbilirubinemia. Advances in diagnosis and management are described, from identification of the alloimmunized pregnancy by maternal ABO and Rh typing, antibody screen (indirect Coombs test), identification and titration; laborato…

Spirochetemia was diagnosed in 2 Siberian Huskies and a Rottweiler from the northwestern region of Texas between June 1999 and October 2001. Clinical findings were nonspecific; tick exposure was documented in 2 of the dogs. Hematologic abnormalities included anemia (n=2), neutrophilia (n=2, including 1 with a left shift), lymphopenia (n=3), eosinopenia (n=3), and thrombocytopenia (n=2). One anemic dog had a positive Coombs' test. In 1 dog, Western blot analysis of serum yielded multiple positive bands with B turicatae lysate, indicating the spirochetemia most likely was due to B turicatae infe

INTRODUCTION: Though pediatric-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is at high risk of coronary artery involvement, coronary artery dilation appears to be a rare characteristic of pediatric-onset SLE. In this article, we described 1 pediatric-onset SLE patient with coronary artery dilation at the diagnosis of SLE, in order to better diagnose and manage this cardiac complication of SLE in children.

BACKGROUND Atypical manifestations of Graves' disease (GD) such as anemia have been noticed in the last decades. Anemia is present in up to 34% of patients with GD, yielding various anemia types such as GD anemia, pernicious anemia, iron deficiency anemia, and autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). So far, AIHA is the rarest manifestation of anemia in GD. CASE REPORT We report a case of 29-year-old woman with initial presentation of typical anemia. Further findings revealed GD signs and symptoms such as orbitopathy, increased appetite along with loss of weight, and hand tremors. Laboratory findin
