A Double Blind Randomised Controlled Trial Comparing Glenohumeral Cortisone With and Without Hydrodilatation in Patients With Frozen Shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a common condition causing pain and stiffness in the shoulder. There is controversy over whether hydrodilatation (HD) gives improved outcomes compared to corticosteroid injection (CSI) alone. The aim of this study was to investigate if HD improves outcomes compared to CSI alone. METHODS: This was a double-blinded RCT. Patients aged 18-90 with FS were included. The CSI group received an injection of contrast followed by local anaesthetic and steroid. The HD group received the same, followed by saline until capsular rupture or severe resistance. The primary o

Response to intra-articular cortisone injections in knee osteoarthritis patients with and without effusion on ultrasound: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation, manifesting as effusion and synovitis, is thought to contribute to pain in knee osteoarthritis (OA). We conducted a pilot study to investigate recruitment feasibility and assess whether effusion on ultrasound of the knee was associated with greater reduction in knee pain after corticosteroid injection. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted from 2020 to 2021 including patients ≥40 years with knee OA undergoing clinically indicated corticosteroid injections. At baseline, participants completed the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) Pain subscale and had

Cortisone-induced immunotolerance to nematode infection in CBA/Ca mice. I. Investigation of the defect in the protective response.

The parasitic nematode Trichuris muris is expelled from the large intestine of CBA/Ca mice after approximately 20 days of infection. Short term treatment with cortisone acetate prevented expulsion and allowed the establishment and survival of an adult worm population for at least 70 days. This tolerance to the primary infection persisted after removal of the adult worms by chemotherapy and allowed the full development of a secondary infection. High levels of blast activity were seen in the mesenteric lymph node on days 30 and 40 of a primary infection in tolerant mice. Serum taken from toleran…

The effects of oestrogen, ACTH and cortisone administration and hypophysectomy on histological changes induced by unilateral renal pedicle clamping.

A study was made in rats of the histological changes occurring in the kidney after temporary application of clamps to the renal pedicle following oestrogen, ACTH and cortisone treatments and removal of the pituitary. It was found that the tubular damage is increased to a small extent by oestrogen administration and to a more significant degree by ACTH and cortisone treatments. In rats hypophysectomized for several weeks the tubular necrosis either did not occur at all or only to an extremely mild degree. The investigations suggest that the change in sensitivity of the tubular epithelial cells …
