A 29-year-old Haitian man with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) developed disseminated cryptococcosis with an unusual cutaneous presentation. He had numerous hypopigmented papules over his face that clinically resembled molluscum contagiosum. To our knowledge, cutaneous cryptococcosis resembling molluscum contagiosum has not been previously rep…

Treatment of osseous cryptococcosis report of a case and review of the literature.

Isolated osseous cryptococcosis is rare. We present a case of lytic femoral lesion due to Cryptococcus neoformans in a healthy young man. Such a lesion should prompt a search for more widespread, disseminated disease. Treatment consists of surgical curettage and intravenous amphotericin B or a combination of amphotericin B and flucytosine. Key indexing words: cryptococcosis, osteomyelitis, fungus, amphotericin B, flucytosine.

A case of primary cutaneous cryptococcosis successfully treated with miconazole.

An 81-year-old man with primary cutaneous cryptococcosis of the left forearm was treated with intravenous and oral miconazole nitrate. Culture for Cryptococcus became negative within three weeks. The ulcer healed within 25 days after treatment was started. Follow-up examination 1 1/2 years later showed no evidence of recurrent infection.

Pulmonary sarcoidosis complicated with pulmonary cryptococcosis: a case report.

Pulmonary sarcoidosis is an idiopathic granulomatous disorder primarily affecting the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes. Pulmonary cryptococcosis, an opportunistic mycosis caused by Cryptococcus species, may occur concurrently with sarcoidosis, presenting substantial diagnostic challenges, particularly in treatment-naïve patients. A 63-years-old previously healthy female presented with insidious-onset dyspnea and low-grade fever. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy, accompanied by small nodules in the right lower lobe. She was diagnosed with pulmonary sa…

Update on disseminated cryptococcosis in non-HIV infected children.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated cryptococcosis is a rare disease in children, especially in children with normal immunity. The understanding of this disease needs to be improved. This study aims to update the global situation of disseminated cryptococcosis in non-HIV infected children for the first time. METHODS: The clinical data of a child with disseminated cryptococcosis was retrospectively analyzed, and disseminated cryptococcosis clinical features of published studies were summarized. Electronic databases were searched in February 2025. Clinical studies that meet the criteria were included in t…

Rapid respiratory cryptococcosis detection using targeted next-generation sequencing.

Cryptococcus neoformans, a WHO critical-priority and neglected fungal pathogen, causes cryptococcosis primarily via inhalation. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic infection to fatal meningitis; suboptimal diagnostics cause delayed detection and high meningitis mortality. This retrospective study evaluated the clinical utility of targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) for diagnosing pulmonary cryptococcosis using respiratory specimens, compared to serum cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) testing and fungal culture. Over 38 months, 39 patients with confirmed cryptococcosis were enrolle…

Pulmonary Cryptococcosis: A Diagnostic and Management Challenge Case Report.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection that may arise in immunocompromised or immunocompetent individuals. This case report seeks to demonstrate the difficulty in diagnosing and treating cryptococcosis based on clinical presentation and radiographic features as together, they mimic other pathological conditions. A 56-year-old female with cirrhosis presented with persistent abdominal pain, dyspnea, vomiting, and diarrhea and was diagnosed with pulmonary cryptococcosis after an initial diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia. With no improvement following antibiotic therapy for suspected bacterial pneumo…
