MRI appearance of popliteal cysts in childhood.

Popliteal cysts are soft fluid-filled lesions of synovial origin which result from extrusion of joint fluid into the gastrocnemiosemimembranous bursa. They may occur in any age group, but 22-33 % occur in the first 15 years of life. In this age group they are rarely associated with intraarticular abnormalities and therefore rarely require treatment. This case report shows the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of a popliteal cyst in two children.

[Computer tomography appearances of intracranial epidermoid and dermoid cysts as demonstrated by three cases (author's transl)].

The authors describe the computer tomography appearances of intracranial epidermoid and dermoid cysts as demonstrated by three cases, and review the published literature. Dermoid and epidermoid cysts can be distinguished from each other by their topography (dermoid cysts are found more medially while epidermoid cysts occur on the base of the skull and in the pontocerebellar angle), by the presence or not of calcification (found almost exclusively in dermoid cysts), and by their computer tomography appearances. Both tumors have low densities, below that of the cerebrospinal fluid, but dermoid c

[A case of temporal lobe epidermoid cyst].

A case of temporal lobe epidermoid cyst was reported. More than 5 ml of cerebrospinal fluid was aspirated during the operation. This cerebrospinal fluid among the anatomical interstices of the tumor was considered to be rather responsible for the low density in the CT scan.

Amebic Liver Abscess in a Patient with Polycystic Liver Disease: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Amebic liver abscess is a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica, which reaches the liver via the portal circulation after invading the colon. While it typically presents with fever, right upper quadrant pain, and elevated inflammatory markers, its clinical and radiologic features can resemble those of bacterial liver abscesses. In patients with structural liver abnormalities, such as polycystic liver disease, symptoms may be atypical and delay diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 75-year-old woman with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease a

Probenecid slows disease progression in a murine model of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Development of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) involves renal epithelial cell abnormalities. Cystic fluid contains a high level of ATP that, among other effects, leads to a reduced reabsorption of electrolytes in cyst-lining cells, and thus results in cystic fluid accumulation. Earlier, we demonstrated that Pkd1RC/RC mice, a hypomorphic model of ADPKD, exhibit increased expression of pannexin-1, a membrane channel capable of ATP release. In the current study, we found that human ADPKD cystic epithelia have higher pannexin-1 abundance than normal collecting ducts. We hypoth

[A Case of Retroperitoneal Serous Cyst Treated by Open Fenestration : A Case Report].

A 47-year-old woman came to our hospital with left lower abdominal pain in April 2013. An abdominal computed tomographic (CT) examination revealed left hydronephrosis secondary to a 7 cm retroperitoneal cyst near the left common iliac artery and ureter. Serum tumor markers including CEA, CA19-9, and CA125 were negative. Although CT guided needle aspiration of the cyst successfully relieved severe left flank pain, the cyst again increased in size, causing left hydronephrosis, though examinations for fluid tumor markers and cytology were negative. Two months later, the patient underwent open fen

Recurrence of trigeminal neuralgia due to an acquired arachnoid cyst.

We present the case of a 55-year-old female with pain recurrence after microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia due to development of an arachnoid cyst. Radioimaging studies were inconclusive for vascular compression but showed evidence of fifth nerve distortion. The patient underwent surgical re-exploration, and a cystic lesion of thickened arachnoid containing cerebrospinal fluid was identified and excised. Postoperatively, the patient obtained pain relief. Arachnoid cyst formation may be a possible reason for pain recurrence after microvascular decompression for trigeminal neura

Chronic subdural haematoma and arachnoid cyst in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

We present the unusual association between chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH), intracranial arachnoid cyst and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) in a 27-year-old man. CSDH is a documented complication of intracranial arachnoid cyst, the incidence of which is increased in patients with ADPKD. Awareness of this association may lead to earlier diagnosis of ADPKD and treatment of its systemic complications, including renal insufficiency, systemic hypertension and previously unsuspected intracranial saccular aneurysm. Surgery for CSDH associated with intracranial arachnoid cyst ma

Endoscopic fenestration of posterior fossa arachnoid cyst for the treatment of presyrinx myelopathy--case report.

A 32-year-old man presented with an arachnoid cyst of the posterior fossa manifesting as cervical syringomyelic myelopathy. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated edematous enlargement and T2 prolongation of the cervical spinal cord, indicating a "presyrinx" state. MR imaging showed the inferior wall of the cyst, which disturbed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pulsatile movement between the intraspinal and intracranial subarachnoid spaces. The cyst wall was fenestrated with a neuroendoscope. The presyrinx state and the CSF movement improved. Posterior fossa arachnoid cyst, as well as Chiari ma

[Intrasellar arachnoid cysts: computed tomography and MRI. Apropos of 2 cases].

We describe the computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings in two cases of intrasellar arachnoid cysts. The diagnosis of intrasellar arachnoid cyst with suprasellar extension should be evoked in case of a cyst-like formation whose density and signal appear to be identical to those of the cerebrospinal fluid even if contrast uptake is evidenced in the cyst wall. Contrast uptake can be related to compression of the pituitary stalk and normal pituitary displacement. Suspected intrasellar arachnoid cyst modifies the surgical approach which must be made via a subfrontal route. We

The MRI geyser sign: acromioclavicular joint cysts in the setting of a chronic rotator cuff tear.

We present the case of a 71-year-old man with a large acromioclavicular (AC) joint cyst successfully managed with surgical excision. AC joint cysts are soft tissue masses generally signifying underlying rotator cuff pathology. Traditionally, these cysts were identified with shoulder arthrography as a "geyser" of fluid escaping through the AC joint. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is today's preferred imaging modality; we describe the MRI equivalent of the "geyser sign," signifying synovial fluid escaping through the cuff defect, across the subacromial bursa, and decompressing superiorly throu

[Early Development of a Symptomatic Expanding Porencephalic Cyst in the Hematoma Cavity after Subcortical Hematoma Removal in an Adult:A Case Report].

A 69-year-old woman presented on an emergency basis, with headache and left hemiparesis. Initial head CT at the time of admission revealed a large subcortical hematoma with perihematomal edema extending from the right parietal to the occipital lobe. A small part of the hematoma extended toward the trigone of the right lateral ventricle. CT angiography revealed no vascular abnormalities. Emergency craniotomy was erformed, and the patient's initial postoperative course was unremarkable. However, the patient's neurological symptoms worsened 10 days postoperatively, and CT revealed a new low-densi

Tetraventricular hydrocephalus due to ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst.

We present the MR imaging findings in a patient who developed tetraventricular hydrocephalus after massive rupture of dermoid cysts with generalized subarachnoid and ventricular spread of cyst contents. The development of tetraventricular hydrocephalus due to ruptured dermoid is a very unusual complication, and was attributed to cyst contents interfering with passage of cerebrospinal fluid through the arachnoid granulations and fourth ventricular outlet foramina.

Cytology in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts. A report of four cases.

Four cases of percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts are reported. Cytologic examination of the cyst fluid is important to confirm the diagnosis in patients who did not develop antibodies. Gomori stain gives the best results in identifying the three elements of a hydatid cyst: scolices, hooklets and laminated membranes. Moreover, staining for viability assessment gives information about the success of drug treatment.

Glimpse into Pathophysiology of Sellar Arachnoid Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Sellar arachnoid cysts are a rare occurrence but may impinge on vital parasellar anatomy and thus are often symptomatic. The etiology of sellar arachnoid cysts is contentious, fueled by heterogeneity in cyst wall structure and contents between cases. The "ball-valve" mechanism is 1 of 2 predominant theories describing their formation, which contends that an aperture in the diaphragm allows cerebrospinal fluid to enter the cyst, propelled by pulsatile flow, but its egress is obscured by the pituitary during the ebb of the pressure wave. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we present a case of a
