Novel complications with HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis: interstitial cystitis and persistent prostatitis.

Lower urinary symptoms associated with HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) are common, but have been regarded as 'neurogenic' due to spinal involvements. However, in some cases, these symptoms are persistent, progressive, and not directly correlated with the severity of other neurologic symptoms of the lower spinal cord. These findings prompted us to locate organic lesions in the lower urinary tract and to correlate them with HTLV-1 infection. Among 35 HAM patients with lower urinary symptoms, we found 4 cases with the symptoms persistent and progressive: 3 with

Toll-like receptor 7 is overexpressed in the bladder of Hunner-type interstitial cystitis, and its activation in the mouse bladder can induce cystitis and bladder pain.

Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) is associated with the pathophysiology of systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren syndrome, well-known diseases accompanying interstitial cystitis (IC). We studied TLR7 expression in the bladder of patients with Hunner-type IC (HIC) and its functional roles in bladder inflammation and nociception using mice. Bladder biopsy specimens were obtained from patients with HIC. Specimens from the noncancerous portion of the bladder of patients with bladder cancer served as controls. The specimens were examined by immunohistochemistry and real-time polymerase chain reaction

Evaluation of an oral Beta-caryophyllene Indena Phytosome® for the treatment of pain and inflammation in interstitial cystitis.

BackgroundInterstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder characterized by pain and difficulties with urination, has limited treatment options. Beta-caryophyllene (BCP) is a sesquiterpene with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, but has poor water solubility and limited intestinal absorption which may limit oral bioavailability. Indena Phytosome® is a proprietary food-grade lecithin-based delivery system that optimizes the bioavailability and pharmacokinetic profile of natural phytochemicals like BCP by producing a stable solid dispersion suitable fo

CBD Promotes Structural and Functional Epithelial Restoration and Alleviates Inflammation in a Mouse Model of Interstitial Cystitis.

Background: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a debilitating lower urinary tract condition characterised by chronic inflammation of the bladder. As the aetiology remains unknown, current treatments are symptomatic, aiming to reduce inflammation and pain. Cannabidiol (CBD), the most common cannabinoid in industrial Cannabis sativa (hemp), is one of the most important pharmacologically active cannabinoids used in medicine due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects without psychoactive properties. While other cannabinoids have shown beneficial effects in animal models of IC, the impact of C

Effect of Intravesical Administration of Steroid Enemas on an Experimental Autoimmune Interstitial Cystitis-Like Mouse Model.

AIM: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic, non-bacterial cystitis presenting with bladder pain, frequent urination, and Hunner's lesions. Current therapies, including dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) instillation, provide temporary relief but often cause procedural pain. Steroid enemas, used for ulcerative colitis and suitable for self-administration, may offer a novel intravesical treatment option. METHODS: An experimental autoimmune interstitial cystitis (EAIC) mouse model was induced by immunization with bladder homogenate. Four weeks later, EAIC mice received intrave

[The interpretation of the updated American Urological Association guideline of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome in 2022].

In 2022, American Urological Association updated the guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). A significant change has been made in treatment recommendations. The updated guideline no longer divided treatments into first-line through sixth-line tiers. Instead, treatment is categorized into behavioral/non-pharmacologic, oral medicines, bladder instillations, procedures, and major surgery. This change emphasizes the heterogeneity of IC/BPS patients and the importance of individualized treatment, overturns traditional unreasonable ideas ab

Causal effects of gut microbiota on risk of interstitial cystitis: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The correlation between gut microbiota and interstitial cystitis has garnered significant attention in previous studies. Nevertheless, the causal relationship between them remains to be clarified. METHODS: Genetic variation serves as a tool in Mendelian randomization analyses, facilitating the inference of causal relationships between exposure factors and disease outcomes. In this study, summary statistics derived from a comprehensive genome-wide association study conducted by the MiBioGen consortium were utilized as exposure factors, while interstitial cystitis data sourced from
