Computer aided detection and diagnosis of polyps in adult patients undergoing colonoscopy: a living clinical practice guideline.

CLINICAL QUESTION: In adult patients undergoing colonoscopy for any indication (screening, surveillance, follow-up of positive faecal immunochemical testing, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as blood in the stools) what are the benefits and harms of computer-aided detection (CADe)? CONTEXT AND CURRENT PRACTICE: Colorectal cancer (CRC), the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death globally, typically arises from adenomatous polyps. Detection and removal of polyps during colonoscopy can reduce the risk of cancer. CADe systems use artificial intelligence (AI

The Value of Normal Interictal EEGs in Epilepsy Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: A Retrospective Cohort Study using Population-level Spectral Power and Connectivity Patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) is a cornerstone in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, but routine EEG is often interpreted as normal without identification of epileptiform activity during expert visual review. The absence of interictal epileptiform activity on routine scalp EEGs can cause delays in receiving clinical treatment. These delays can be particularly problematic in the diagnosis and treatment of people with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) and those without structural abnormalities on MRI (i.e., MRI negative). Thus, there is a clinical need for alternative quanti

Role of Neck Imaging Reporting and Data System in Evaluation of Recurrent/Residual Lesions of Head and Neck Cancers by Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT) With Pathological Correlation.

Introduction Head and neck cancers remain a major global health concern, mainly involving the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, and salivary glands. The Neck Imaging Reporting and Data System (NI-RADS) has been developed as a structured framework in order to enhance the quality and consistency of imaging reports for patients undergoing surveillance after treatment for head and neck cancers. NI-RADS provides a standardized lexicon that simplifies the communication of imaging findings. This is crucial given the intricate anatomical and pathological changes that can occur following treatment

Can you please hold? An assessment of the impact of reporting room assistants on interruptions in the reporting room of a major trauma tertiary center.

BACKGROUND: Radiology departments provide imaging support for emergency, inpatient and elective care, with radiologists responsible for image interpretation, scan vetting, protocoling, advising clinical teams, and communicating urgent findings. In major trauma centers, urgent Computed Tomography (CT) examinations are interpreted during "hot reporting," where radiologists provide real-time reports to guide immediate clinical decision-making. These sessions are high-pressure, high-volume environments and frequently interrupted by telephone calls and in-person queries. Such interruptions disrupt

Using Textural Analysis of Thermal Imaging to Predict Healing Status of Diabetes-Related Neuropathic Foot Ulcers: Protocol for a Co-Design and Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs) are common in people with diabetes and a major cause of poor quality of life and disability. If not treated in a timely and appropriate way, DFUs may result in prolonged hospitalization and amputation. Currently, methods to predict the healing trajectory of DFUs lack accuracy. Thermal imaging has been proposed to overcome these limitations but has been unable to accurately predict delayed healing of DFUs in the early stages of ulcer management. This project aims to ascertain whether textural analysis of a thermal image can predict the healing tra

Intraductal neoplasms of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: Since 1980 a group of pancreatic tumors have been termed intraductal papillary mucinous tumors (IPMT). Because these tumors occupy an intraductal position they are demonstrated by pancreatography to reside in the main pancreatic duct (MPD) or side branch ducts (SBD). Lesions of IPMT result in abdominal pain or pancreatitis symptoms because mucin production or papillary growth results in ductal obstruction. Only 104 cases had been reported in the literature by 1996 but more are being presented in abstract form. We reviewed our own 33 cases to assist defining operative decision-makin

Low glenoid vault bone density is a risk factor for failure of proximal humerus fracture fixation.

HYPOTHESIS AND/OR BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine whether computed tomography Hounsfield units (CTHU) are an independent predictor of proximal humerus fracture fixation failure following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). We hypothesize that CTHU of the glenoid vault <160 Hounsfield units (HU) would be associated with a higher rate of failure of ORIF and need for subsequent revision to arthroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed at a single academic center, including patients who sustained a displaced proximal humerus fracture treated with ORIF

Quantitative computed tomography assessment of bone mineral density in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: correlations with Cobb angle, vertebral rotation, and Risser sign.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a prevalent spinal disorder that can potentially influence bone mineral density (BMD), thereby increasing the susceptibility to osteoporosis and fractures. Early identification of reduced bone mass in AIS patients is crucial for clinicians to develop effective preventive strategies against fractures. This study aims to elucidate the correlation between BMD, as measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT), and various clinical parameters in AIS, including the Cobb angle, vertebral rotation, and the Risser sign. By revealing the potentia

Contemporary NSTEMI management: the role of the hospitalist.

Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is defined as elevated cardiac biomarkers of necrosis in the absence of persistent ST-segment elevation in the setting of anginal symptoms or other acute event. It carries a poorer prognosis than most ST-segment elevation events, owing to the typical comorbidity burden of the older NSTEMI patients as well as diverse etiologies that add complexity to therapeutic decision-making. It may result from an acute atherothrombotic event ('Type 1') or as the result of other causes of mismatch of myocardial oxygen supply and demand ('Type 2'). Regar

Brain tumor segmentation and detection in MRI using convolutional neural networks and VGG16.

BackgroundIn this research, we explore the application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for the development of an automated cancer detection system, particularly for MRI images. By leveraging deep learning and image processing techniques, we aim to build a system that can accurately detect and classify tumors in medical images. The system's performance depends on several stages, including image enhancement, segmentation, data augmentation, feature extraction, and classification. Through these stages, CNNs can be effectively trained to detect tumors in MRI images with high accuracy. This

Ambient ionization mass spectrometry in brain cancer diagnosis.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and with ongoing population growth and aging, its annual incidence continues to rise. Glioma is a malignant tumor of the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Neurosurgical tumor resection is a critical component of glioma treatment, significantly affecting patient prognosis. However, due to the diffuse nature of gliomas, achieving gross total resection is challenging, and residual tumor cells often lead to recurrence and disease progression following surgery. Intraoperative cancer diagnosis using rapid and sensitive technique
