Nationwide Geographical and Temporal Distribution of Tick-Borne Diseases in Korean Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus).

Ticks are major vectors of numerous pathogens, and their public health significance is increasing due to climate change and the expanding involvement of wildlife hosts. In Korea, the Korean water deer (KWD, Hydropotes inermis argyropus) is widely distributed and considered a key wild host for ticks, potentially serving as a reservoir for diverse tick-borne diseases (TBDs). To examine the geographical and temporal distribution of TBDs in this species, 1035 spleen samples were collected from KWDs across 12 regions between April and November 2023. Overall, 93.6% (969) of samples were positive for…

The recurrent Spike A222V mutation in SARS-CoV-2 enhances replication in primary deer lung cells.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infects humans and animals and is therefore a pathogen of grave concern within … nd animal cells. We passaged SARS-CoV-2 in cells expressing human, dog, cat, mink, and white-tailed deer ACE2 and sequenced the passaged populations. In addition, we searched SARS-CoV-2 sequences for mutations following patterns of convergent evolution that were common to both human- and animal-derived SARS-CoV-2 sequences. We identified the epidemiolo …

Plastic sex-trait modulation by differential gene expression according to social environment in male red deer.

Mate competition encourages individuals to modulate characters involved in mating success. Adult Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) males show a dark ventral patch (DVP) that plays a central role in mating rivalry, whose size and chemical compounds varied according to the level of male-male competition within the population. In the pigmentation of the DVP appears, after urinary excretion, a molecule called DOPEG originating from the metabolism of norepinephrine, leading us to investigate whether differential expression mechanisms of key genes dopamine B-hydroxylase (DBH) and tyrosine…

Akkermansia muciniphila isolated from forest musk deer ameliorates diarrhea in mice via modification of gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: The forest musk deer, a rare fauna species found in China, is famous for its musk secretion which is used in selected Traditional Chinese medicines. However, over-hunting has led to musk deer becoming an endangered species, and their survival is also greatly challenged by various high incidence and high mortality respiratory and intestinal diseases such as septic pneumonia and enteritis. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that Akkermannia muciniphila (AKK) is a promising probiotic, and we wondered whether AKK could be used as a food additive in animal breeding programmes to hel…

Regulation of muscle pyruvate dehydrogenase activity and fuel use during exercise in high-altitude deer mice.

Adult, lab-reared, highland deer mice acclimate to hypoxia by increasing reliance on carbohydrates to fuel exercise. Yet neither the underlying mechanisms for this shift in fuel use nor the impact of lifetime hypoxia exposure experienced in high alpine conditions, are fully understood. Thus, we assessed the use of fuel during exercise in wild highland deer mice running in their native environment. We examined a key step in muscle carbohydrate oxidation - the regulation of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) - during exercise at altitude in wild highlanders and in first generation (G1) lab-born and -r…

Collection and in vitro maturation of Mazama gouazoubira (brown brocket deer) oocytes obtained after ovarian stimulation.

In vitro production of embryos has gained prominence as a tool for use in wildlife conservation programmes in situ and ex situ. However, the development of this technique depends on steps that include ovarian stimulation, collection and oocyte maturation. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of an ovarian stimulation protocol for follicular aspiration, the efficiency of videolaparoscopy for follicular aspiration and test a medium for in vitro oocyte maturation for the species Mazama gouazoubira. Five females were submitted to repeated ovarian stimulation (hormone protocol us

Hair Cortisol Concentration and Body Mass in Moose (Alces alces) Infested with Deer Keds (Lipoptena cervi).

The deer ked (Lipoptena cervi), a hematophagous ectoparasite of cervids, is currently spreading in Scandinavia, and the moose (Alces alces) is its main host. However, little is known about the impact of deer keds on moose. We analyzed the hair cortisol concentration (HCC) from 262 moose harvested in the fall in relation to age class, sex, body mass (BM), and deer ked infestation intensity, and BM in relation to age class, sex, and infestation intensity. We found that HCC decreased with increasing deer ked intensity at low ked intensities, but for the higher levels of ked intensities, there was…

Parasitic pneumonia in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Cornwall, Great Britain, caused by Varestrongylus capreoli (Protostrongylidae).

BACKGROUND: Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) became extinct over large areas of Britain during the post mediaeval period but following re-introductions from Europe during the 1800s and early 1900s the population started to recover and in recent decades there has been a spectacular increase. Many roe deer are shot in Britain each year but despite this there is little published information on the diseases and causes of mortality of roe deer in Great Britain. CASE PRESENTATION: The lungs of two hunter-shot roe deer in Cornwall showed multiple, raised, nodular lesions associated with numerous proto…

Spine and Spinal Cord Injuries After Falls From Tree Stands During the Wisconsin Deer Hunting Season.

BACKGROUND: Deer hunting is popular in much of the United States. In Wisconsin, use of tree stands for hunting is common. Spine surgeons at a Level 1 Trauma Center observed a high incidence of spine and spinal cord injury due to falls from tree stands while hunting. This study's purpose is to systematically characterize and classify those injuries. METHODS: We reviewed the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics' trauma database for tree stand-related injuries from 1999 to 2013. We collected and analyzed data pertaining to hunters' demographics, comorbidities, type and mechanism of injur…

Low Copper Levels Associated with Low Carcass Weight in Wild Red Deer ( Cervus elaphus ) in Norway.

Copper (Cu) deficiency is associated with several disease syndromes, including poor growth, in farmed red deer ( Cervus elaphus ), but little is known of the consequences of low Cu levels in free-ranging populations. Low hepatic Cu levels have been documented in several wild red deer populations along the west coast of Norway, with the lowest values found on the island of Hitra. We studied the relationship between liver Cu concentration and slaughter weight in 63 red deer calves and 69 yearlings shot on Hitra during the autumn hunting season of 2009. Less than half of each age class had adequa…

Chemical immobilization of free-ranging fallow deer (Dama dama): effect of needle length on induction time.

We evaluated impact of the needle length, sex, and body condition on chemical immobilization induction time in 50 (29 males and 21 females) free-ranging fallow deer (Dama dama) in Sweden, 2006-11. Induction time is probably the single most important factor when immobilizing free-ranging wildlife with the use of a remote drug-delivery system. Induction times should be short to minimize stress and risk of injury, and to ensure that immobilized animals can be found and clinically monitored as soon as possible. We measured the distance between the darting location and where we recovered the immobi…

Sex-Age Related Rumination Behavior of Père David's Deer under Constraints of Feeding Habitat and Rainfall.

Extensive studies have been conducted on the rumination behavior of domestic herbivores. However, studies on wild animals are limited, particularly wild animals with specific ruminating parameters. In this study, Père David's deer, a previously extirpated species, was observed to analyze the effects of sex-age, feeding habitat, and rainfall on rumination behavior in the Dafeng Nature Reserve, China. Rumination behavior was investigated based on four parameters: proportion of bedding time spent chewing, bolus processing time (s/bolus), chewing frequency (chews/bolus), and chewing rate (chews/s)…

Low-level parasitic worm burdens may reduce body condition in free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus).

Regulation of ungulate populations by parasites relies on establishing a density-dependent relationship between infection and vital demographic rates which may act through the effect of parasites on body condition. We examine evidence for parasite impacts in 285 red deer (Cervus elaphus) harvested during 1991 and 1992 on the Isle of Rum. In the abomasa, prevalence of nematodes was 100% and the most abundant genus observed were Ostertagia species, however, mean intensity of infection was low (less than 1000) relative to other studies. Additional species, also present in low numbers, included Ne…

Antigen recognition by serum antibodies in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) experimentally infected with Mycobacterium bovis.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have emerged as reservoirs of bovine tuberculosis in northern America. For tuberculosis surveillance of deer, antibody-based assays are particularly attractive because deer are handled only once and immediate processing of the sample is not required. Sera collected sequentially from 25 Mycobacterium bovis-infected and 7 noninfected deer were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting, and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA) for immunoglobulin specific to M. bovis antigens. Various routes of experimental M. bovis infectio…

Recovery and cryopreservation of sika deer (Cervus nippon) spermatozoa from epididymides stored at 4 degrees C.

The aim of this study is to clarify influence of cold storage of deer epididymides on sperm quality and suitability for cryopreservation. The epididymides were obtained postmortem from sika deer during the breeding season. When epididymides were removed 8-12h postmortem and stored at 4 degrees C for 1-4 days, the collected spermatozoa showed low motility (6.4%). When spermatozoa were collected from epididymides removed within 4h postmortem, sperm motility and viability were 71.8 and 82.4%, respectively. Sperm motility decreased as prolongation of the storage period of the epididymides continue…

Pathogenesis of experimental vesicular stomatitis virus (New Jersey serotype) infection in the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus).

The pathogenesis of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection has not been investigated previously in native New World rodents that may have a role in the epidemiology of the disease. In the present study, 45 juvenile and 80 adult deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) were inoculated intranasally with VSV New Jersey serotype (VSV-NJ) and examined sequentially over a 7-day period. Virus was detected by means of immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization in all tissues containing histologic lesions. Viral antigen and mRNA were observed initially in olfactory epithelium neurons, followed by olf…

Deposition patterns of disease-associated prion protein in captive mule deer brains with chronic wasting disease.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in captive and free-ranging cervids in the USA; its origin is obscure. Archival formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens of 16 captive mule deer brains with CWD were analyzed using immunocytochemistry for the disease-associated prion protein (PrP). The most prominent pattern of PrP deposition were plaque-like structures, a substantial proportion of which were florid plaques surrounded by a rim of spongiform vacuoles. The percentage of florid plaques was highly variable according to region, ranging from 0% to…
