Maternal mental health problems during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are a challenge for public health. Not recognizing them hinders a timely diagnosis and treatment and has an impact on the mother and the establishment of the fundamental bond of the mother-child dyad. We must recognize the risk factors (age, socioeconomic status, mental health history, family dysfunction, unfavorable environment), clinical manifestations, and screening tools. There is evidence that the effect of stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy negatively affect fetal neurodevelopment and co

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: New parents who have previously experienced psychosis outside and/or following childbirth have an increased likelihood of experiencing an episode during the postpartum period. The decision to try to conceive can be agonising. Receiving care from a specialist perinatal community mental health team can improve outcomes. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This article offers a first-person insight into the steps the author took to minimise the impact of an episode of postpartum psychosis and/or postnatal depression whilst navigating new motherhood. AIMS: The objective of this research is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of zuranolone, the first oral treatment indicated for postpartum depression (PPD) in adults approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
METHODS: Zuranolone and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) trial-based efficacy was derived from an indirect treatment comparison. Long-term efficacy outcomes were based on a large longitudinal cohort study. Maternal health utility values were derived from trial-based, short-form 6-D responses. Other inputs were derived from literature and economic data from

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Studies on the association between perineal trauma (episiotomy and tear) and the risk of postpartum depression in Omani mothers are scarce. This study aimed to screen women for the risk of postpartum depression and associated maternal adverse outcomes (episiotomy and tear) in newly delivered Omani mothers.
DESIGN/METHODS: Mothers were screened for postpartum depression using only the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), with cut-offs of 1-12 indicating low risk and 13-30 indicating high risk. Data on birth outcomes were collected retrospectively from the medical recor

OBJECTIVE: Altered self-reported autonomic reactivity is associated with worse mental health in the general population. Although dysfunctional changes in ANS during pregnancy have been investigated in relation to depressive symptoms, no studies addressed the relationship between self-report autonomic reactivity during pregnancy and depressive symptoms after the delivery. The present study aimed to assess the impact of prepartum self-reported autonomic reactivity on the development of postpartum depressive symptoms.
METHODS: In this longitudinal study, 170 women were assessed during pregnancy

BACKGROUNDS: A history of childhood abuse and subsequent poor relationship with parents in adulthood among pregnant women is a known risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD). Although parent-daughter relationship can change during pregnancy, little is known whether the trajectories have an impact on PPD. The aim of this study is to examine whether trajectories of parent-daughter relationship during pregnancy are associated with PPD in Japanese mothers.
METHODS: In a hospital-based prospective cohort study conducted in Japan, 4,772 women were followed from their first visit to their 1-month

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression has costly consequences for the mother, baby, and society. Numerous pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are available for the prevention and treatment of postpartum depression. To date, no attempt has been made to synthesize the evidence from comparisons of interventions both within and across these categories.
METHODS: We will perform a systematic review of the literature and perform network meta-analysis of interventions to (a) prevent and (b) treat postpartum depression. This review will include studies of primiparous or multiparous wom

Postpartum depression (PPD), the onset of depressive episodes after childbirth, is the most common psychological condition following childbirth, and a global public health concern. If undiagnosed and/or untreated, postpartum depression can have negative effects on maternal and child health, however, there are few studies on the prevalence of postpartum depression in low- and middle-income countries. To contribute to filling this gap, this study examined the prevalence and risk factors associated with postpartum depressive symptoms among women after delivery in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. The s

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth has been recognized as a risk factor for perinatal depression (PND), with consequences for parenting and child development; however, the impact of severity of prematurity on parental PND course has not been studied extensively. Exploring the PND trajectory across postpartum period, investigating whether it changed according to birth weight and parental role, can help developing effective interventions.
METHODS: At 3 (T1), 9 (T2) and 12 (T3) months postpartum, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to 177 parental couples, differentiated in 3

Despite common use of antidepressants to treat postpartum depression, little is known about the impact of antidepressant use on postpartum brain activity. Additionally, although oxytocin has been investigated as a potential treatment for postpartum depression, the interaction between antidepressants and exogenous oxytocin on brain activity is unknown. We explored postpartum depressed women's neural activation in areas identified as important to emotion and reward processing and potentially, antidepressant response: the amygdala, nucleus accumbens and ventral tegmental area. We conducted a seco

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate associations between indicators of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) functioning and metabolite levels in the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG) of women with postpartum depression (PPD).
METHODS: The sample (mean age = 28.5 ± 4.6 years) consisted of 20 women with PPD and 19 postpartum euthymic (PPE) women. Brain metabolites were quantified by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Salivary cortisol samples were collected upon awakening and 30 min and 12 h later, at 20.6 ± 6.6 (PPD) and 23.0 ± 7.4 (PPE) weeks after childbirth.

OBJECTIVE: The first-onset affective episode requiring inpatient treatment in the postpartum period can be a marker of bipolar disorder, but it is unknown whether milder postpartum affective episodes are also indicators of underlying bipolarity. Therefore, we aimed to study whether women with a nonpsychotic postpartum affective episode treated with antidepressants have an increased risk of bipolar disorder.
METHODS: A register-based cohort study was conducted in Denmark of 122,622 parous women without psychiatric history who received a first-time antidepressant prescription during 1997-2012.

BACKGROUND: Substantial data indicate potential health consequences of untreated postpartum depression (PPD) on the mother, infant, and family. Studies have evaluated interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) as treatment for PPD; however, the results are questionable due to methodological limitations. A comprehensive review of maternal treatment preferences suggests that mothers favor 'talking therapy' as a form of PPD treatment. Unfortunately, IPT is not widely available, especially in rural and remote areas. To improve access to care, telepsychiatry has been introduced, including the provision of t

BACKGROUND: As a critical factor in early childhood development (ECD), parenting stress has been demonstrated to adversely affect maternal well-being and child developmental outcomes. This study examined the association between family support and maternal parenting stress and assessed whether postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms account for this association.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,099 mothers of children aged 0-2 years in Shanghai, China. The Simplified Chinese version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), the Family Adaptability, Partnershi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a motivation-based intervention for fathers to enhance empathy and egalitarian gender-role attitudes, aiming to prevent maternal postpartum depressive symptoms.
METHODS: This was a single-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial conducted at a regional hospital in Japan. Eligible couples were recruited during the postpartum stay if the mother had a full-term birth and no psychiatric history. From October 2023 to November 2024, 262 fathers were enrolled and randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The brief online intervention

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depressive symptoms are a common psychiatric condition with multifactorial aetiology. Haematological inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been proposed as indicators of systemic inflammation in mood disorders. This study aimed to investigate the association, rather than causality, between these markers and postpartum depressive symptoms in a homogeneous sample of first-time mothers.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional observational study, 92 primiparous women attendi

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is an important maternal mental health concern. Knowledge, self-efficacy, and social support may be associated with the recognition and severity of depressive symptoms. This study assessed PPD knowledge among pregnant women/mothers and adults from the broader population in Saudi Arabia and examined the associations of self-efficacy and perceived social support with depressive-symptom scores in the maternal group. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Saudi Arabia from January to March 2021. Convenience and chain-referral sampling were

Background/Objectives: Postpartum depressive symptoms are a major maternal mental health concern associated with adverse outcomes for mothers and infants. Although biological, psychological, and social factors have been associated with postpartum depressive symptoms, limited evidence has examined their interrelationships within a theoretically grounded framework among Thai mothers. This study aimed to test a hypothesized Stress Process Model of factors associated with postpartum depressive symptoms among Thai mothers using structural equation modeling (SEM). Methods: A cross-sectional study wa

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a public health issue affecting both maternal well-being and child development. While it is the most common mental health disorder following childbirth, data on its prevalence and associated risk factors in developing countries, including Ghana, remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: This study determined the prevalence of postpartum depression and identified its associated risk factors among pregnant women who developed hypertensive disorders of pregnancy at the Adabraka Polyclinic in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
DESIGN: This study was a hospital-based cross
